OK, so now I'm diabetic...

...just got the word yesterday, but suspected as much for some time. My doctor thinks with diet and oral meds I can control it and maybe even reverse it w/o having to go to insulin, but it will be a struggle. My blood sugar level yesterday was sky high--Mr. Shrewd here had a bagel and iced sweet coffee before the check up but no matter--that no reason to have a bsl of 314 unless your pancreas ain't working.
Sigh, sigh and double sigh...in the past two years heart disease, heart attacks, kidney stones and now this. But, Buffettina is pretty sure she wants to see me around for awhile...so, bring on the test strips, food diary and meds.
I will beat this.

Success here involves attitude, both in terms of being very positive about your outcome and in terms of being dedicated to keeping it under control, but it can be done. My sweet Margaret's mom had the same problem (in her case, it was Old Fat Lady Diabetes), but she decided that she absolutely did NOT like needles, and by force of will got her weight down (I'm talking like 100 pounds down), and watched her diet, and did well for years without having to puncture herself. And surely, 'attitude' is not a problem for anyone on the Bored?
Good luck!

I'll keep sending you positive thoughts! You seem to have a positive attitude already, so that is good.
My weight loss efforts of late, are specifically because we have such a high incidence of diabetes from both sides of the family. I really don't have a choice this time, for if I continue the way I am, I'll be headed down that path.
A question for you though: Did you have any symptoms prior the diagnosis from your physician?

Follow your doctor's orders! I'm sorry to hear this, but it is controllable and it sounds like you have a good attitude. It does make you stop and think when you get a diagnosis you weren't wanting to hear.
Good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear this, but glad to hear of your attitude.
I'm sure that your doctor already has this set up for you, but going to a nutritionist specializing in diabetics can really make a difference.
There are a lot of nutritional misconceptions about what to eat if you are diabetic.
A diabetic-type diet is good for just about anyone.

Buff, we already know you can do anything that you've made up your mind to get done.
Think of those poor, lonely, ignored vials of insulin, sitting on a dusty pharmacy shelf somewhere, have no sympathy for them whatsoever, and never think of them again!

Best of Luck Buff. These things are sent to try us...again and again and again and again....oh, sorry, wandered there LOL
You'll do just great, and we know you have the strength and desire and ability to handle it.

As usual, I stand ready for informal consultations.
I recommend you see a diabetes educator and registered dietitian. Knowledge is always a great place to start.
Feel free to post or PM me.

Rats. That's got to be rough, on top of everything else you have to deal with. I like your confidence, though. I think you can handle this -- I know you can. We'll all be pulling for you.

Please take care of yourself and don't go into denial about the dangers of high blood sugar.
My husband has been diabetic since 1990. He takes insulin twice daily and the past 2 months his bs has been really high. But he doesn't seem concerned and he's too big for me to drag to the doctor. I just live in fear of going home and finding him in a diabetic coma.

Diet and exersize! I had to go through that with the last pregnancy, and it was boring but effective! And by "diet" I don't mean eating less to lose weight (my mom barely broke 100 lbs and had Type II, and I'm no bruiser myself..) but watching what you eat and when and how much at a time and what combines well and what doesn't (fruit and milk together just sends your sugar into the statosphere) and it's BORING, but ya just gotta do it. If not for yourself, for the others.
Hang in there!

My dad was diagnosed with Type II diabetes after an operation.
He was the type of person who didn't like doctors, who didn't want to be sick. He really didn't take care of himself and ended up dying from a massive heart attack at the age of 55.

You can do it. My s.o. is in the same boat, just got diagnosed and I have a lot of sympathy for you. I know it's hard to watch the diet but there are so many rewards for sticking with it- being healthy, not having to need insulin, and sticking around a good long time for Buffettina.
Good luck!

Last year I got the news that I was pre-diabetic. I have been a little more sensible about what I eat, and with medication I am keeping my numbers pretty normal. I am lucky in that I can "cheat" and "treat" once in a while without any real consequences..I just have to make sure I keep it at "once in a while" and not "heck, my numbers have been good, I can cheat more often" and I should be ok. I'll be testing for the rest of my days, though.
No doubt you are plenty p.o.'d about this news..I was. You'll adjust, though. You're a smart guy. You know your family needs you and loves you. You'll do what you have to for their sake as well as your own.
Hang in there and good luck!

Many thanks to everyone for the kind thoughts and encouragement--I am going to beat this back and be around to whine about the phone game and wanting another chance on Jeopardy for a long time!

That's tough, Buff - but with a good diet and a little more shakee-shakee, you can do it!
You've got reat incentives to stick around, you know.

I insist that you stop doing the things that one could say had you end up where you are.
I insist.
Let the medical people take care of what your body is doing when you treat it right.
Treat it right.
I insist.

Blood sugar at Drs. office...314.
Blood sugar last night after dinner--less than one week on diet...100!
And, just started the meds.
This can be done!

Hey Buff
great news on the 100 blood sugar!
Interesting, they say you should eat breakfast as soon as you get up... as to 'jump start' your metabolism.
I also insist that you exercise, get 10 minutes of sunlight (at least) every day and look into Chromium Picolinate..,.. Chromium is very good at stabliizing insulin levels.
