Kate Kobs
West Hartford, CT
Unemployed

Kate brought the two things she loves most - her husband Graham and the shoes that will help her "strut her stuff" in the Hot Seat. Meredith thinks they're gorgeous and she got them at a discount thanks to her husband. Kate can cross only one eye at a time. She used to cross both eyes and tried to see what she looked like in the mirror. Kate
demonstrates and Meredith says she finds that disturbing.

With all LLs intact:$15K-what a WWOQ.  I doubt the audience would know, so I'd ATE.$50K-I know when these guys served. JQ Adams is way too early, Hayes is way too late (he was elected in 1876), and so is B. Harrison. I go with Polk.

$100K-good grief, basic European geography for this much money? If you can picture France and know which countries it borders, you can easily figure out this answer.

Pretty sure that France borders all of those. No geography expert here, I hasten to add.

France borders all four of the listed countries. Could you explain your reasoning further?

Belgium is one of the Low Countries. The other three are mountainous in some parts.

True, but that has nothing to do with the Tour de France. The race always has included mountainous sections, which may be one reason why Spain, Switzerland, and Italy always field strong teams.

So, you might have gotten the right answer for the wrong reasons. Would you have gotten far enough to see it? I don't see why the audience wouldn't have known the 15K Q, as it seems figure-outable to me. What about the 25K Q? Did you know that one without a lifeline?

I did. Ha! Although I admit I didn't know that's where it got the name. I shouldn't be so surprised, though. Body piercings and tattoos were very popular back then among the rich and privileged. These people today, thinking they're so daring and cutting edge...... not even realizing that there is truly nothing new under the sun. But I still can't believe they had a question about it on this show.

And correct me if I'm wrong, lb (I'm sure you will), I do believe that a PA discussion quite some time ago is what spurred the creation of the Avatar Genie.....

I don't know about that, but I do recall I made up the Avatar Genie as a promo for my Judge Judy skit. I do recall us having a Prince Albert conversation back around that time though.......

This year's Tour, which begins in a couple of weeks, starts in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and the first leg ends in Bruxelles (Brussels). Leg 2 is Bruxelles to Spa (Belgium). Leg 3 is Spa to Wanze (Belgium). During Leg 4, they first cross into France.

From the comfort of my home, I picked the right answer. I figured that with Switzerland, Italy, and Spain all being relatively close to each other, Belgium was too far away from the other three to be included in the race. In the HS, I probably would've asked the audience and see if they could confirm it. I'm certainly not giving this question to Margaret. If the audience vote is inconclusive, then I'll burn the DD and still pick Belgium.

Actually, her reasoning was sound- all the other animals have fur...the hippo does not.

Not such a WWOQ after-all. A WWOQ is one where there's no amount of logic you could use to help you get the answer.

As for the $100K, news flash- Belgium borders France.

I would have guessed it assuming that Belgium doesn't have many (any?) hills, so they'd want to go places where there were hills/mountains.

Ooops! Didn't read all the way thru the thread- I see I had the same reasoning as Kazoo...and would've been right for the wrong reason!!!

Since Esto says that this year's race will include Belgium and the Netherlands in the race, trying to make a logical guess at the race organizers' objectives in expanding the race seems to be rather speculative, unless one remembers an article that might have included some official explanations. Are they trying to turn this into a Tour de Europe?

Probably. There are probably sponsor fees to be had and revenues to be shared.

The first three Tours stayed within France. The 1906 race went into Alsace-Lorraine, territory occupied by Germany since the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. Passage was secured through a meeting at Metz between Desgrange's collaborator, Alphonse Steinès, and the German governor. The race passed to the waving of local people, the race director Victor Breyer wrote, but not without trouble at the border. L'Auto reported the difference between the German and French border controls:
Woken from a deep sleep, obliged to get up in three minutes, the German customs appeared before us correctly dressed in new uniforms. At the French border, by contrast, it was simply distressing. Smelly, covered in mud, their clothes patched and discoloured, backs bent, squashed képis on dirty bodies, the two officials charged with nosing around on behalf of the tax authorities and who represented France revolted us.
—[88]
The Germans let not only the competitors pass without problem but all the officials and their cars and the amateur enthusiasts who rode with them. "It is distressing," L'Auto said, "to find that it's only the French who can't grasp the simple idea ... of allowing the best representatives of French energy [to cross the border]."[89] The paper offered to start a public appeal to provide better clothes for its frontier officials.
No teams from Italy, Germany or Spain rode in 1939 because of tensions preceding the second world war, and the race was not held again until 1947 (see Tour de France during the Second World War). The first German team after the war was in 1960, although individual Germans had ridden in mixed teams. The Tour has since started in Germany three times: in Cologne in 1965, in Frankfurt in 1980 and in West Berlin on the city's 750th anniversary in 1987. Plans to enter East Germany that year were abandoned.

A shame. I reasoned that since there were several Alpine stages in the race, it probably would run through Switzerland and Italy. I didn't think it went far enough north to hit Belgium, so that would have been my answer. I'd be going for $250K with my DD still in hand.

I think that was a very hard question. The Tour de France has went into or through Belgium many times in the past. Spain and Switzerland have also been on the Tour quite a bit in recent years. Back in the 50s and 60's it went into Italy quite a bit but 2008 was the first time since 1999.

This running of the Tour into other countries is not new. Almost every year it has stages in the surrounding countries.

That last bit is kind of puzzling: West Berlin is (or was, in 1987) surrounded by East Germany: no matter where you go, when you leave West Berlin, you have to 'enter' East Germany. Unless maybe they rode just short of the Brandenburg Gate (on the western side), got into helicopters and passed over East Germany?

The prologue and first two stages of the 1987 Tour de France took place within West Berlin.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1987_Tour_de_France

President Reagan was a big supporter of bicycle racing. He even went to Berlin a couple weeks before the start of the 1987 Tour to lobby regional politicians on behalf of an expanded race course. He made a big speech in front of one of the main barriers. Reagan's efforts were too late to expand that year's race course, but his message resonated with many other bicycle racing fans who later implemented his key recommendations.

agree, hard. the only logic would be to pick Belgium as the odd border out geographically, but since there is no requirement that the stages be contiguous, one could certainly choose without difficulty to cover both the north and the south in one year. Looking at the map of the Tour as it was run, however, shows that Andorra and Monaco were also covered, to make 5 excursions from France into other places, all to the south and east; there was also one inter-stage plane trip, and one long train ride -- after the penultimate stage -- from the Rhone valley up towards Paris. In Monaco the first stage was an individual time trial;( I shall look up the route to see if they used the same streets as the F1 Grand Prix).

$100K-good grief, basic European geography for this much money? If you can picture France and know which countries it borders, you can easily figure out this answer.
I suppose it is what you know. And don't know. No problem at 15K (although, despite Ms. Cho's wealth of trivial knowledge demonstrated so convincing lately it might be worth noting that hippos do indeed have "hair", as do all mammals, although it is so sparse one would perhaps not think of it as "fur"!

But knowing France bordered all four countries listed AND knowing that Belgium was the closest to Paris by far (and the fact that I have little interest in the race or the sport) I would have had no idea on this one. I believe the route is rarely the same from one year to the next but typically is close to the borders and always ends in Paris so I found it to be quite difficult.
