Lyrically Speaking - 1/15/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Tue Jan 15, 2008 6:25 am

Time for Tuesday Wordplay, so each of today's songs has a common word somewhere in their titles.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

2. I spend so much time
Believing all the lies
To keep the dream alive

3. She'll expose you, when she snows you
Hope you're pleased with the crumbs she throws you

4. Try to remember the magic that we shared
In time your broken heart will mend
I never used you, you knew I really cared
I hate to see it have to end

5. You really know me, that's all I need to know.
Maybe I'm an open book because I know you're mine,
But you won't need to read between the lines.

6. I told you everything
Opened up and let you in
You made me feel alright
For once in my life

7. All my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside

8. Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak

9. She was the same as a hundred ladies
But when my eyes looked at her I learned
That she was keepin a secret fire
And if I got real close I'd burn

10. Oh girl, you've got to know
what my head overlooks
the senses will show to my heart
when it's watching for lies

11. Sailing down behind the sun,
Waiting for my prince to come.
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again

12. Can't you see I'm finding it hard to let go oooh
All the heartaches we've been through
I never really thought I'd see this love grow
But you helped me see

OK, that's all I've got on sight.

Now, what other "Eyes" songs do I know?

These Eyes ... Guess Who
Angel Eyes ... Jeff Healey
Evil Eyes ... Styx
My Eyes Adored You, if it's even called that ... 4 Seasons?
Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain ... Hank Williams
Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue ... Crystal Gayle
Sad Eyes ... Robert John
Only Have Eyes for You ... whoever
Private Eyes ... Hall & Oates
Suite Judy Blue Eyes ... Crosby Stills & Nash

Not a bad list, if I do say so myself. Any matches? Hmmm...

No. 6 sounds maybe like My Eyes Adored You. I'll take it.

Oh! OK. No. 10 is Private Eyes.

I wrote down No. 4 as These Eyes on first impression, but now I'm not so sure. It's kind of break-uppy. I'm going to switch No. 4 to Sad Eyes.

It must have been No. 2 resonating in my head when I so quickly pegged These Eyes at No. 4. These Eyes has to be on here somewhere, so I'll give it the No. 2 spot.

No. 9 doesn't really match anything on here.

I'm spending way too much time on this.

How does the beginning of Suite Judy Blue Eyes go again? I know all the other parts, but every time I try to start it I end up at Ca-a-arry On, Lo-o-ove is Coming...

All right. Suite Judy Blue Eyes has to be on here somewhere so why not No. 9.

What else? 11 must be female, so even though I'm sure I'm wrong, Crystal Gayle's the only woman on my list, so she gets it.

No. 12...Only Have Eyes for You. Because I just don't care anymore.

I know 8, I swear I do, and I know it's not on this list. But I'm felted. It can't be Jeff Healey 'cause he's blind. I know it's not Styx, but I know it's not Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain either, so I'll throw Styx a bone.

Wait! Last second change. 8 is Only Have Eyes for You, 12 is Evil Eyes.

Like it matters.

I'm out of here.

Can't Take My Eyes off of You - Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

I can never remember what is Four Seasons, what is FV & FS and what is FV, so in the future, I'm going to just cover the bases (I think this is the fourth time already this month!).

YIKES! I put down My Eyes Adored You for this one at first! YAY! for preview.

Thank goodness I knew the first three songs to give me the EYES because I had to piece together the few other ones I knew from that. I can't really even think of that many eyes songs, although they'll be popping into my head for a couple days now. Ha!

ANSWERS/POINTS

#20 Post by littlebeast13 » Wed Jan 16, 2008 7:16 am

1. No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies
Behind Blue Eyes - The Who (Some recent band [Who I'm too lazy to look up] covered this song back in 2005 or thereabouts, and one night 2 years ago while I was helping unload the truck, one of the young punk unloaders heard the Who version come on the radio and said, "Hey, they redid so-and-so's song!" I'm no old fogey, but it made me sick to hear that....)

2. I spend so much time
Believing all the lies
To keep the dream alive
Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol

3. She'll expose you, when she snows you
Hope you're pleased with the crumbs she throws you
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes (This was the #1 song in all of 1981 despite the almost irritatingly raspy voice of Carnes and the use of what I once heard was an intentionally cheap and cheesy drum machine)

4. Try to remember the magic that we shared
In time your broken heart will mend
I never used you, you knew I really cared
I hate to see it have to end
Sad Eyes - Robert John (Apparently Leo Sayer did a version of this song, but was it noteworthy? I figured all the Sayer answers were due to the fact that it does sound like him singing in the popular version. For now, though, I rejected Sayer as an answer, though I could be persuaded to change that if anyone cares to argue the case)

5. You really know me, that's all I need to know.
Maybe I'm an open book because I know you're mine,
But you won't need to read between the lines.
For Your Eyes Only - Sheena Easton

6. I told you everything
Opened up and let you in
You made me feel alright
For once in my life
Behind These Hazel Eyes - Kelly Clarkson

7. All my instincts, they return
And the grand facade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

8. Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak
I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You - Franki Valli/Four Seasons (And a cast of others I accepted. I think the only answer I didn't accept was Little Anthony & the Imperials)

9. She was the same as a hundred ladies
But when my eyes looked at her I learned
That she was keepin a secret fire
And if I got real close I'd burn
Ebony Eyes - Bob Welch

10. Oh girl, you've got to know
what my head overlooks
the senses will show to my heart

Oh, you bastard! Would it kill ya to leave it open until 10? :P

I had a sentimental journey this Christmas--I asked for Celebrate Me Home because I had the album on vinyl when I was a teenager. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it still after all these years. Then I saw Ebony Eyes, and it cracked me up. I had wasted 12 bucks or so on that crappy album, because I liked Sentimental Lady. Even the cover was icky. Talk about a bunch of filler surrounding a couple songs. I guess he regretted leaving Fleetwood Mac after they blew up big, so they threw him a bone by singing backup on a song.
