Remember The Alamo!

During lunch last night, a bunch of the crew were in the lunchroom talking about past trips, and someone brought up the Alamo. He said it was a joke of a tourist attraction, and another guy agreed that it was pretty unspectacular. So I pipe up with, "Yeah, Pee Wee Herman wasn't impressed with it either......."



Stone silence.


It isn't like it was all old fogies, half of the group was approximately my age......


After the third or fourth "I didn't get that", I had to explain that it was a reference to the famous plot of "Pee Wee's Big Adventure". Now, while I may be more of a fan of the movie than other people are (It is definitely in my Top 5 of the 80's), I can remember a time when "The basement of the Alamo" was a part of pop culture, and nobody had to explain anything. Can it be that the movie that gave us the Big Shoe Dance, Large Marge, and made a catch phrase out of "I know you are, but what am I?" has gone forgotten!?!?!?!?!?

Not knowing the real significance of the Alamo is even sadder. I've been to two locations in my life where I literally felt the presence of history and souls in the area and the Alamo was one of them.

That people in the group found the Alamo "pretty unspectacular" says more about them to me than their failure to recognize a pretty unspectaculer Pee Wee Herman joke.

For that matter all Pee Wee Herman jokes were pretty unspectacular...

I tried to make a reference to the basement of the Alamo to my middle school quiz bowl team this season. As I'd expected, it fell flat but I figured that would be a surefire way to figure out who my favorite student was.

I think the one's guy's main beef with the Alamo (And he's a Vietnam vet who has an appreciation for history) was that apparently (And I have never been to the Alamo, or even Texas, to know firsthand) the Alamo, or what is preserved of the Alamo, is surrounded by a conglomeration of more modern buildings..... like the proverbial "park" in the middle of a downtown area. "There ain't no way Davy Crockett fought here!" the guy said (Well, he did admit he was stoned when he went through there)..... but the other guy backed him up on being unimpressed......

Well, sure. The Alamo is in the middle of downtown San Antonio, a city of 1.1 million people.

What did he expect?
