Is there a tool that you use for making strips of fabric?

I ask because I want to make some thin strips out of netting or tulle and it's almost impossible to do with scissors because it's so slippery and whatnot. And I optimally want them as long as possible.

I saw a hand held thing on Joann's website that kind of looked like a stapler, but it didn't have very good reviews.

I guess this question wasn't meant for Angel....

I too am a quilter, and I so wanted to help! I use scissors for everything, but I've never needed to cut netting or tulle. I know what it is, because I've seen it at the Sears, but I don't know why I'd ever use a fancy fabric. It's not solid enough for modesty, and it's not thick enough for warmth.

Please let me know if I can ever help you make a nice bed cover or a pot holder.

What most quilters use is a rotary cutter. It looks like a pizza cutter but has a razor sharp blade. You lay your fabric down on a self healing mat, folded to make it easier, then you put a ruler on top and cut against the ruler. Let me see if ther is a good web link somewhere.

I have seen the thing from Joann's but I thinkit is pretty expensive. I wouldn't buy one and I do a lot of strip piecing.

You could try my box cutter. I managed to wack a nice cut in my pinkie with it about 4 hours ago......

SWMBO has special fabric shears that we lowlifes are not allowed to touch (or even know the whereabouts of, if I want to be honest). She uses those for cutting thin strips of just about anything, including Christmas ribbon and tulle. When I get tricked into going to JoAnn's or somewhere similar, the workers use shears for cutting at the fabric tables, too.

Maybe this is the invention that will make you rich!

My son broke the scissors with the lifetime blades when he used them to (try to) cut carpeting. He broke the piece that held them together.

So lay off the fabric shears if you know what is good for you!

They know where mine are, they also kow that they DO NOT TOUCH them.



I was smart and bought a couple of packages of scissors and they are convienently located so there is no need to go to my sewing room and use the fabric scissors.

Mom had off limits scissors too. I still have them someplace. I bet they're as sharp as the last day she used them.

Would they be sharp enough or strong enough to cut through a bunch of layers of tulle or netting? I can't get a uniform strip with scissors because they just slide around while the netting just slips all over the place.

Yes, the rotary cutter is EXTREMELY sharp. The technique is to put the ruler down, pinning the layers in place, then cutting with the rotary cutter.

I can cut through 8 layers of fabric. But I usually only do 4.
