Lyrically Speaking - 1/14/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Jan 14, 2008 7:16 am

Time for another exciting edition of Match Game Monday. The following songs can be broken up into 6 pairs based on some common theme.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 1 point for each correct match....

1. Moses went walking with the staff of wood. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Newton got beaned by the apple good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

2. I was dreamin' when I wrote this
So sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party
And parties weren't meant to last

3. Ain't no use in complainin'
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenin's down at the drive-in
And that's when I met you

4. Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?

5. Well, send 'em your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free

6. Hypnotizing, mesmerizing me
She was everything I dreamed she'd be
Sweet surrender

7. Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that

8. All you want to do is ride around Sally
Ride, Sally, ride.

9. She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake's car

10. If I could go back in time
Well, I know somehow you'd still be mine
I wouldn't be so blind
To that wonderful

11. A cloud appears above your head.
A beam of light comes shining down on you.
Shining down on you.

12. We've got stars directing our fate
and we're praying it's not too late
'cause we know we're falling from grace

Spoiler

Not sure if I'm going to be around later, so I'm just answering what I can instead of letting them rattle around all day. That's going to kill me on the matchups today.

1. Who Knows - Would You Match 1 & 2?

2. 1999 - Prince and the Revolution

(I woke up with Prince lyrics running through my head this morning, but not this one. Cause that would be weird. Ha!)

3. Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams

4. Abraham, Martin and John - Dion DiMucci

5. We are the World - USA for Africa

6. December 63 (Oh, What a Night) - The Four Seasons

I can't remember which half is parenthetical

7. Who Knows, Part 2 - Placeholder and the Matches

8. Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett

9. 1985 - Bowling for Soup

For some connection with the last LS, Cameo sang this on Hit Me Baby One More Time. And it was great! But it's impossible for Cameo to be less than great.

10. 65 Love Affair - Paul Davis

11. I Ran - Flock of Seagulls

They were on Hit Me Baby as well. If you had Tommy Tutone and Loverboy in there, I'd have a theme going. Oh, this isn't Theme day....

12. It's the Only Thing Left - Casserole and the Leftovers

2. 1999 & 7. Who Knows, Part 2
3. Summer of 69 & 1. Who Knows
4. Abraham, etc. & 6. Kennedy Assassinated in 63
5. We Are the World & 9. 1985 (when they did it?)
8. Mustang Sally & 10. 65 was the first full production year (1964 1/2 was in between and limited) I really wanted to make this Sally Ride and 1985 until I realized that she wasn't on the Challenger
11. I Ran & 12. It's the Only Thing Left

Here I go again...(which is not one of today's songs)
Spoiler
1.
REM- Man on the Moon

2. Prince- 1999

3. Bryan Adams- Summer of 69

5. We Are the World- USA for Africa. Our high school choir was conscripted to sing this constantly. I hate this damn song.

6. That awful "Oh What A Night" song, don't remember the artist

8. Mustang Sally, but the only artist I can think of is the Commitments, which isn't right, although they did cover it.

9. She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake's car

This one is going to bug the crap out of me all day, because I know I've heard it.

Lucky you, Beast! I had just written all my thoughts out as I pieced this one together, and then somehow lost the whole post without saving. So as I re-post, I'll spare you the commentary and just provide the answers.

1. Moses went walking with the staff of wood. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Newton got beaned by the apple good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Man on the Moon ... REM

2. I was dreamin' when I wrote this
So sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party
And parties weren't meant to last

1999 ... Prince

3. Ain't no use in complainin'
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenin's down at the drive-in
And that's when I met you

Summer of '69 ... Bryan Adams

4. Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?

Abraham Martin and John ... Dion

5. Well, send 'em your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free

We Are the World ... USA for Africa

6. Hypnotizing, mesmerizing me
She was everything I dreamed she'd be
Sweet surrender

Down to the Waterline ... Dire Straits. I know this is wrong, because I know I know it, but I can't place it.

7. Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that

If this is 1984 by David Bowie I'll be bitter, because I'm going with 1979 ... Smashing Pumpkins

8. All you want to do is ride around Sally
Ride, Sally, ride.

Mustang Sally ... Wilson Pickett

9. She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake's car

1985 ... Bowling for Soup

10. If I could go back in time
Well, I know somehow you'd still be mine
I wouldn't be so blind
To that wonderful

'65 Love Affair ... Robbie Dupree? No, Paul somebody? Chilliwack? I'm so lost. I'll say Paul ....... Davis? A guy with a guitar and a beard, at any rate.

11. A cloud appears above your head.
A beam of light comes shining down on you.
Shining down on you.

I Ran From a Flock of Seagulls. I have to type it that way.

12. We've got stars directing our fate
and we're praying it's not too late
'cause we know we're falling from grace

Man, this could be the bridge from 1979, because it starts out "We...", but I just don't think it is. It could be 1982 by Randy Travis, but I know that song too, and it just doesn't fit. I'll say 1984 ... David Bowie.

Bonus:

1 and 2 (although I'm positive that Man on the Moon came out many years earlier, it's the only one I can find that fits)

3 and 4

5 and 9

6 and 7

8 and 10

11 and 12

2. 1999 -- Prince
3. Summer of '69 -- Bryan Adams
4. Abraham, Martin, & John -- Dion 69
5. We Are the World -- USA for Africa 85
6. Oh What a Night (December 1963) -- The Four Seasons
7. 1979 -- The Smashing Pumpkins
8. Mustang Sally -- Wilson Pickett 65
9. 1985 -- Bowling for Soup
10. '65 Love Affair -- Paul Davis
11. I Ran -- A Flock of Seagulls
12.

3-4
5-9
8-10

I"m pretty stumped, because these three look so good I can't believe the theme is something else. But Man on the Moon seems too early to be 1999, I Ran is from early 80s, and I can't find a song from 1979 or 1963. So here are my best guesses for the remaining links:

1-2
7-11

1-Man on the Moon-REM
2-1999-Prince
3-Summer of '69-Bryan Adams
4-Abraham, Martin, & John-Dion
5-We Are the World-USA for Africa
6-December 1963 (Oh What a Night)-Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons

8-Mustang Sally-Wilson Pickett
9-1985-Bowling for Soup
10-'65 Love Affair-Paul Davis
11-I Ran-A Flock of Seagulls
12-Millenium-Robbie Williams

This was VERY clever and well-thought out, LB. It's one thing to find songs with years in the titles, but to find songs concerning events that took place in those years was pretty impressive.

Matches:
1 and 3 (Man walks on the moon in the summer of '69)
2 and 12 (two-thousand zero-zero, party over, oops, out of time)
4 and 6 (Kennedy assassinated in 1963)
5 and 9 (We Are the World led to Live Aid, the concert held in 1985)
7 and 11 (Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979)
8 and 10 (Ford introduces the Mustang in 1965)

Ugh. Six year songs
1999 - nothing from that year I see
1969 - Abraham Martin and John?
1963 - Mustang Sally?
1979 - I got nothin'
1985 - We are the World. Definitely.
1965 - nothing

So, we are left with Man on the Moon (early 90s), I Ran (1982ish), and #12 (I'm guessing the one from 1999)

So...

either I have some of these songs wrong or this isn't the theme, although it seems to fit.

Wait! Big time revelation!

1-3 (Man on the moon in 1969)
4-6 (JFK killed in 1963)
7-11 (Iranian hostage crisis began in 1979)
9-5 (We are the World occurred in 1985)
10-8 (1965 Mustang? It's a guess)
2-12 (since Mustang Sally doesn't seem to have anything to do with the year 1999)

7. 1979 - Smashing Pumpkins (Their best song)

I'm blaming my poor performance today on the chest congestion - wracking cough - body aches - clogged sinuses - watery eyes (etc., etc.)

Sympathy is greatly appreciated, and I've already put in for a Sub tomorrow. Probably should have done it today, but I was gonna be "tough"! Yeah, right.
Spoiler

2. 1999 - Prince
3. Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams
4. Abraham, Martin and John - Dion

8. Ride, Sally, Ride - Wilson Pickett
9. I'll guess Whitesnake, in case they were being precious with the song

ANSWERS/POINTS

1. Moses went walking with the staff of wood. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Newton got beaned by the apple good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Man on the Moon - REM

2. I was dreamin' when I wrote this
So sue me if I go too fast
But life is just a party
And parties weren't meant to last
1999 - Prince

3. Ain't no use in complainin'
When you got a job to do
Spent my evenin's down at the drive-in
And that's when I met you
Summer of '69

4. Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
Abraham Martin and John - Dion

5. Well, send 'em your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
We Are the World - USA for Africa

6. Hypnotizing, mesmerizing me
She was everything I dreamed she'd be
Sweet surrender
December 1963 (Oh What a Night) - The Four Seasons

7. Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that
1979 - Smashing Pumpkins

8. All you want to do is ride around Sally
Ride, Sally, ride.
Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett

9. She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake's car
1985 - Bowling for Soup (This song really bugs me, because it's the kind of stuff you'd get if you tried to write a song about someone who lived in an era you were too young to remember or not even born in, and all you had to work with was historical references. Pretty much every 80's cliche appears somewhere in this song, and it spans almost the entire calendar decade [Someone who listened to Blondie is more likely to have wanted to shake their ass on the disco floor with John Travolta a couple years before rather than take Tawny Kitaen's place a full 7 years later]. Then there's the line about "Who's that other guy in Van Halen". Huh!?!?!? This certainly isn't a reference to the 3 minute long Gary Cherone era... it's gotta be about Sammy Hagar.... who only joined Van Halen and had several big hits with Van Halen a year before Whitesnake ever hit it big. Curse mini for ever introducing me to this song... and curse her even more because I always think this song is done by one of her favorite bands, Cake :P )....

10. If I could go back in time
Well, I know somehow you'd still be mine
I wouldn't be so blind
To that wonderful
'65 Love Affair - Paul Davis

11. A cloud appears above your head.
A beam of light comes shining down on you.
Shining down on you.
I Ran - A Flock of Seagulls

12. We've got stars directing our fate
and we're praying it's not too late
'cause we know we're falling from grace
Millennium - Robbie Williams

The theme was songs containing years in them matching up with events that occured in those years.

1-3 - This was the most obvious match since Neil Armstrong landed on the moon in the Summer of '69, and not surprisingly the one I thought of that inspired this particular game.

2-12 - 1999 and the turn of the millennium. Thank God I will never have to listen to any of that Y2K garbage again....

4-6 - JFK, whose line I referenced in the song, was assassinated in late November 1963 (Almost perfect, but the year was all that mattered)

5-9 - While We Are the World was recorded in January 1985, TBone was right on that this was more in reference tothat July's Live Aid (which kicked off on my 10th birthday) and the increasing awareness in the music community of the starving kids in Africa.

7-11 - Iran (Obviously a play on the title I Ran) very much dominated the news in 1979.

8-10 - 1965 is generally considered to be the year of the Ford Mustang's debut, though obviously in the car business, the models are released early. Then there's the oddity of the '64 1/2, but since 1964 wasn't in any of the songs, it still pointed to this particular match.

I have my answers in my back pocket--I came to print this out and had no chance to come back and play. I wouldn't have had ANY correct matches except by accident, but I had most of the songs.

So, curse you right back! And Cake is nothing like BFS. Right now, I think I will dedicate "Nugget" to you.... :P

I didn't do too badly, considering I completely botched the theme. I thought that you were matching based on the year that each of the non-numbered sings was released.

I forgot to mention it in my answers post, but I do not feel fortunate for losing out on the post where you made your commentary. Reading the comments and written-out thought processes in people's answers are sometimes the best part of games like this. Heck, Marley used to give "Sonny & Jennifer" points for extraneous comments when he ran Timeline....
