Oprah was in our town today.

Oprah Winfrey is going to kick off a national "Let's get healthy" type campaign on January 14. She and her trainer were here in Meridian, MS. today to get some footage for the kickoff show. She came here because our city parks & recreation department organized a city-wide weight loss campaign a few months back. It actually ended Dec. 31 but the city decided to extend it 3 months since a lot of people would be signing up today during the event. As you might imagine, it was a madhouse downtown today. There were people down there at 3 AM to try and get front row locations.

The Governor initiated a campaing back in August called "Let's Go Walking" that encourages everyone in MS to walk and get healthier. We were one of 6 schools in the state that were selected as "My School Walks" participants in the program. If we can walk a required number of minutes per students by May, we get $5,000 for the school to spend on any sort of instructional equipment we want. So our kids now take the looong way around to the cafeteria. We sent our 5th grade down there with our "My School Walks" banners. If you see them on the show, those are my little darlings.

The Oprah show that featured my hometown aired today. It gave us a fairly positive representation. Hope some of those cheering folks actually follow through on their weight loss contract.

Cool! :D

I feel touched by greatness on this bored ... No matter what happens, somebody here knows about it/participated in it/created it!
