As an aside, the Lake Tahoe Triathlon (at true Ironman distances of 2.2 mile swim, 26 mile marathon and 110 mile bike ride) used to bill itself as the world highest and toughest triathlon. The lake itself is at 6,000' and is very cold even in the summer. The marathon goes around the rim of the lake at various altitudes up to 7,000' and the biking goes over several passes close to 8,000'.
