Project Runway Episode 7 – What a Girl Wants

#1 Post by fuzzywuzzy » Thu Jan 10, 2008 10:40 am

Tim’s Take… What a Girl Wants
Heidi tells our nine remaining designers that for this challenge they are to create a look for the most important day in a girl’s life. Then, she introduces the models: seniors from St. John Vianney High School in New Jersey. These young women are the designers' clients, too, and in a Project Runway first, it is they who are choosing the designers with whom they will work. The selection process was informed by a review of each designer’s portfolio: Pick the designer who best suits your own sensibility.

The designers have 30 minutes to meet with their new clients in the workroom. While they are expected to listen to and assimilate their client’s desires, they are also to be true to who they are as a designer. We say goodbye to the ladies and head to MOOD where each designer shops with a budget of $250.

The designers have two days for this challenge. And as a surprise on day two, the designers’ clients return for a fitting -- with their mothers!
Gilles Mendel is our guest judge. His design work, J Mendel, demonstrates how perfectly-suited he is to judge this challenge. We were so fortunate to have him.

Victorya wins. This is her second win, tying her with Rami for the most challenges won. Victorya’s win was especially noteworthy in light of the fact that her client, Jessica, told her that she didn’t choose her to be her designer; rather, she was the last client standing and Victorya was the last designer remaining. Interesting. Regarding the judging, I have a refrain this season: it’s a matter of taste. Chacon a son gout. With the level of execution being at an all-time high, it’s the design content and presentation that tips the scales for or against a designer.
Frankly, the decision to toss Victorya this win eluded me. In my view, the electric blue textile said “superhero” not prom. Furthermore, the jewel emblazoned panel on the front of the halter made the dress look more appropriate for a hostess at a Vegas cocktail lounge than a teenager attending a suburban prom. C’est la vie. The judges loved it and Victorya enters into the next challenge with immunity. Congratulations!

Kevin is OUT. OK -- accepting the aforementioned statement about “execution being at an all time high,” Kevin’s undoing was that #$^&ing hem. The judges fixated upon it. Oh, there were other issues with the dress, indeed -- his red fabric looked harsh and cheap, and the appropriateness of the babydoll silhouette was questionable, as was the dress's length. But in the end, it came down to the hem, literally and metaphorically. Kevin, we’ll sincerely miss you.

Chris, for the second challenge in a row, practiced unbridled restraint and it served him exceptionally well. He teased me at MOOD when I saw the moss green charmeuse and raised an eyebrow: “I’m making a Christmas theme dress complete with a poinsettia corsage!” What?!?! “Just kidding!” His design was superb in my view. The silhouette was sleek and elegant, the slit up the front was sexy without being even remotely vulgar, and the proportion of the train (almost always a risky design element) allowed the dress to still be navigable. Go, Chris!
Christian, our fierce prodigy, was almost derailed by this challenge, a demonstration of his relative youth. Some may say that his client, Maddie, was difficult. I prefer to say that she was just being an opinionated client. But it was a battle of the wills, and Maddie dared to throw hubris in the face of an angry god. Christian’s design concept was sound, but his execution was deplorable, especially the fit. He was crashing and burning and he knew it. Fortunately, he skidded by, but not without some significant rug burns.

Jillian designed a turquoise spaghetti-strap dress with a fishtail hem. The silhouette was beautiful, the drape was languorous, and the overall effect was stunning. Her client, Erika, looked good enough to be crowned prom queen.

Kit took risks, which I always applaud. In this case, the risk was in her choice of textiles -- an unconventional blue for the main body of the dress and three panels of color for the bust-line. I looked at the fabric on her worktable and asked myself, “How is this going to work?” I was concerned that her dress would look like a school craft project. But work it did! Her client, Brie, looked ravishing.

Rami fell into a trap of his own making; that is, he was too “Rami” and didn’t adequately embrace the teen aspect of this challenge. As he continued to develop his design and it came clearer and clearer into focus from the ether of its origin, it looked like a dress that would be more appropriate for his client Bianca’s mother. The dress was matronly, plain and simple. He had plenty of feedback and plenty of time to mitigate this issue, but he can be stubborn. Furthermore, he had immunity. But, immunity granted, wouldn’t he still like to win?

Ricky-oh-Ricky. I am constantly reminded that this is a competition among peers, not a competition with one’s self. It’s essential that the designers look around the workroom and assess how their design measures up to everyone else’s (but without harboring the delusions of Christian). After we return to the workroom from shopping, I don’t believe in talking to the designers about things that they can’t change: in this case, the fabric. So, let’s accept that the color was lackluster and do something compelling with the silhouette, which a bubble skirt is not (nor ever will be ...). And this particular bubble skirt had the oddest quasi-organic/quasi-architectural construction. Everything about the design and execution was flat. Ricky, I’m merely happy that you’re still here!

Sweet P was neck-and-neck with Victorya for the win. In fact, Heidi declared that their two designs were the only two that the judges really liked. Sweet P artfully facilitated and mitigated the wants of her client, for had she executed the dress as instructed by Nicole, then she would have had a vulgar mess. Instead, her champagne charmeuse full-length gown was glamorous and regal, and she beautifully evoked a sexy attitude. The only casino that this dress would see is in Monte Carlo. Bravo, Sweet P!

Project Runway Episode 7 – What a Girl Wants Synopsis
Project Runway went back to high school this week as the designers helped their student models get ready for prom -- one of the most important nights in a girl's life, as Heidi says. All of the designers had to work with their teen clients -- and clients' mothers -- on their concepts, and while most didn't have a problem, Christian found his client to be rather difficult, and let the judges know. Other designers, like Rami and Ricki, may have been confident in their designs, but the judges weren't too keen on them. In the end, Christian's inability to take charge put him in the bottom two, but the judges found that Kevin's too-mature red dress should send him home instead. The judges, including guest judge Gilles Mendel, found Victorya's short blue sheath and Sweet P's long champagne ensemble the most appropriate, and the win went to Victorya.

Thoughts? I liked Sweet P & Chris's designs the best. I think that the more drama we see from Christian...will spell his demise!

Love this show...

I agree. I liked Chris's the most and was very surprised not to see him in the top three. I also liked his interaction with the client and her mother. He seemed very relaxed. I also liked Chris's comment about being voted off when the others were trying to determine who was the most pitiful. Sweet P's a whiner, and I'm looking forward to her drama with Rami next week.

I am surprised that Sweet P came up with something so tasteful. To me she seems like a great candidate for Tim's other show, especially the trip through the underwear drawer.

I didn't watch the show, I looked at the dresses on the site.

I like Victorya's dress the best. It looks edgy, while still being age appropriate for a teenage girl. The dress doesn't show too much cleavage and it's long enough to be both hip and modest.

Chris' dress is interesting. I like the color, but I can see it looking horrible in some types of light. Few women can pull off that color.

Kevin's dress is pretty, but doesn't suit the girl who is wearing it. I think that Tizi is too busty for the dress and it makes her look heavier than she probably is. I don't like the hem.

Jillian's dress is pretty and I like the color, but I don't love the hemline.

Christian's dress for Maddie is horrible. Brown is the wrong color for her complexion. I think that if the dress had been made in pink or red or the right shade of orange, Maddie would have looked better and some of the details on the dress would stand out more.

Kit's dress looks like something a middle-aged woman would wear to a Christmas party.

Ricky's dress is ok. I think that the length made Katie look hippy. If the dress had been longer and straighter, it would have flattered her more.

I didn't like Rami's dress. I hate the color and I hate the drape.

I like Sweet P's dress. The dress is age-appropriate and the details are beautiful. I saw a bunch of girls going to prom last year and the dress is exactly the type that they were all wearing. I would have some concerns letting Maddie wear it because of the plunging neckline, so I would have to see what kind of cleavage was showing before I let her wear it.

I found this a good challenge to the designers. They are not used to working with this type of dress/client so it was outside their comfort zone which makes for a better competition.

I really didn't like Vitorya's dress. It totally flattened whatever cleavage the young lady had.

Sweet P's was nice.

I just love Chris so I hope he stays in.

Christian has to get over himself. Not likely.

I was not sad to see Kevin go. Not bad but not noteworthy either.

I really do enjoy this show.

I liked Sweet P's dress and Chris's dress the most.

Wasn't nuts about Victorya's dress. Didn't think it flattered the bustline at all.

Did Christian actually LOOK at his client before designing the dress?

Prom gown?

What was your prom dress like sc? and other ladies of the bored?

I went to my prom while the Gunny Sac (sp?) were all the rage. However, I wore a coco brown georgette dress lined in coco nylon. It had tiny pink & blue flowers on it. 3/4 sleeves, and went to the floor. While I was visiting my date's home, I put my heel thru the hem. I went back to my house, and my Mom sewed it.

Unfortunately, my Mom threw the dress away a few years ago.

I need to find my yearbook and my high school memoriablia so I can scan the photo in.

The guy who I was "dating" didn't want to go to the prom, so, my friend Steve asked me. None of my "friends" saved us a seat at their tables, so we sat at the table where all the late comers (i.e. people who had been "partying" before the party) sat.

I was chosen for the Prom Queen's court. That was a shocker!

When my niece graduates in 2009, it will be my Mom's 50th High School Reunion and my 30th!

Although I'm not one of the ladies, I'll add my comments. The girl I took to the prom (not elwing) wore what for all intents and purposes was a pantsuit, albeit in flowing fabric, not polyester. It had a large floral pattern over a basic blue color. Keep in mind that this was in 1970, and the girl was not into the social scene (glittering prom dresses, high heels, etc.).

As for elwing, she didn't go to her prom. In Oklahoma in those days Baptists didn't dance, and so she had no desire to go.

Mine was a long, baby blue, hoop-skirted, strapless dress of the style now known as "a Cinderella gown." I liked it okay, but it probably wasn't what I would have picked for myself. My mother saw it in a store window while driving through in some small Wyoming town. She loved it, put on the brakes, and went inside to buy the dress on the spot.

I wore the same dress for both my junior and senior years. Because my folks already had moved to Oklahoma during my senior year, I didn't have many shopping options. If anybody noticed that I was wearing a rerun, nobody cared.

Years later, mom gave the dress to my niece to wear for Halloween.

Well call me weird. Oh shut up. I liked the winning dress. I loved the color and thought it was "kicky". She didn't have a bust to enhance, so...

Anyway, I never attended the prom and that's why I'm a recluse and social misfit today. I'm pretty sure it had some bearing on my lack of balance and directly caused my recent fall.
Well, then

Two prom gowns.

Junior prom -- white, empire waist and floral overlay on the bodice.

A couple years later, my cousin Regina had an unexpected prom invite to a school other than hers (but might be attended by some of the same kids -- local Catholic school vs. local public school thing). The dress served her well.

I was pleased.

I adored my senior prom dress.

Blue-ish teal with a floral chiffon overskirt. The skirt flared and was made for dancing.

I almost didn't go to my senior prom. I wasn't dating anyone and had no prospects. Neighborhood buddies were going with other neighborhood buddies.

Finally, a girl in my class volunteered her brother, who was a junior. Nice enough guy but it wasn't the dream date I always through my senior prom should be.

I think TLAF felt a little sorry for me and wanted to make shopping for the dress extra special.

A great dress that later worked for several cousins and neighbors. Eventually, became part of a Halloween princess costume.

For my Junior Prom (I didn't go with Jeff) I had this white Scarlett O'Hara type of dress. I really wanted a sleeker lavender dress, but my mother liked the Scarlett O'Hara dress. I don't look good in pure white and I think that the dress was hideous.

For my Senior prom (I went with Jeff) I wore a red strapless dress. It looked like a 1950's prom dress and I thought that it was beautiful. My mom didn't want me to get the dress, but my dad paid for it.

Jr. Prom - Pale pink chiffon over pale pink taffeta with some cream lace banding around the waist and two-tiered full length skirt. Scoop neck, long, sheer sleeves. I felt like a princess.

Sr. Prom - "candlelight" white column-with-a-waist style with spaghetti straps and small band of cutwork around the top. I felt very sophisticated. My date (and future husband) purchased the dress for me at Neiman's

Jeff has never bought me clothes. He says it's not a good idea unless he buys something that is way too small.

He bought me a lovely purse for Christmas though.

Is that what causes it? Ha!

I, like Bebe, never attended the prom. I didn't have a senior year and I'd already left school before the prom my junior year.

Although I guess, technically, at the time the prom was going on I was wearing my stylish Walgreen's waitress uniform, fashioned from a chic polyester blend in the stylish shade of grab you by the short ones orange. Topping off the ensemble was a hair ribbon emblazoned with the Walgreen's signature script (I'm sure Gucci ripped off the idea from them).

I've never seen this show but my sister and nephew love it (and they are my partners in Flav and Bret, so it must be good, right?).

I worked during HS and saved up the $136 it cost to buy my prom dress. It was featured in Seventeen Magazine and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Lavender off the should with white lace and a looooong skirt that was layer after layer of the lavender and white lace. I did not attend the Jr. Prom. Only my Sr.

My date was my long time bf from a nearby town. We attended his prom too (sort of). I was in a community theatre play and had a show that night in my hometown. We weren't going to be able to have our pictures taken at prom unless I was there before the show so I attended school with him that day, we got dressed and went for pictures, I hopped in the car and drove the 40 minutes home (changing out of my prom dress as I drove. don't ask how. it was country roads and no one could have seen - we were also having a wind storm and it was bad visibility.) I picked up my Mom at home, she drove me to Dairy Queen where I purchased dinner and then she drove me on to the theatre so I could get into costume and make up. The show was in the upstairs of the Elks club so they stored my bouquet in the beer cooler. I did the show which ended with me dressed as Shirley Temple singing The Good Ship Lollipop, left the stage after curtain call, my date was standing in the hall in his tux. I changed back into the prom dress, took the banana curls out of my hair, toned down the stage makeup and we picked up my bouquet in the bar on my way out to the car. We drove to his hometown and arrived at his prom in time for the last two songs. He had refused to take anyone else even though I had insisted I wouldn't mind as he should be there to enjoy all of his prom and not just a small part.......He wore a lavender cumberbund to match my lavender dress. I had big hair and think I look like a teddy bear hamster in the pictures.

Thanks for asking. Brought back funny funny memories......
