Lyrically Speaking - 1/10/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Jan 10, 2008 6:14 am

It's Theme Thursday, which means that each of these 12 songs satisfies some underlying theme.

1 point for the title, 1 for the artist, and 3 for the theme....

1. I'm not your lover
I'm not your friend
I am something that you'll never comprehend

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night

10. Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday...Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.

12. You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense

Theme?

I got a shot at a bunch of these! Woo Hoo!
Spoiler
littlebeast13 wrote:It's Theme Thursday, which means that each of these 12 songs satisfies some underlying theme.

1 point for the title, 1 for the artist, and 3 for the theme....

1. I'm not your lover
I'm not your friend
I am something that you'll never comprehend

Miss You Much, Janet Jackson

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family

Seasons in the sun, Terry Jacks (Yes, I'm ashamed for knowing this--why do you ask...?)

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again

I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight, Cutting Crew

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

Live and Let Die, Wings

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

Killing Me Softly, Roberta Flack

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.

*CRASH!* Familiar, but can't pull it right now...

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

One of those 60's car crash songs...

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

Eleanor Rigby, Beatles

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night

Another car crash song, but since I know the Pearl Jam version, I can safely say Last Kiss, Pearl Jam

10. Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday...Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday

Don't Fear the COWBELL! Or Don't Fear the Reaper, Blue Oyster Cult

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.

Something with Heaven having a Hell of a Band. Three Dog Night? Whiffing on a song I know....

12. You say you just don't see it
He says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement
In this present tense

In the Living Years, Mike and the Mechanics

Theme?

Well, I guess the theme is death or loss. Somebody is gone or dead.

Spoiler
5. Killing Me Softy/Roberta Flack

7. Dead Man's Curve/Jan & Dean

8. Eleanor Rigby/The Beatles

By the way, I dunno how the official lyrics list this, but in the continuity/timing of the song itself, "darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there"
should all be on one line

9. Last Kiss/J. Frank Wilson (& the backup girl group I'm always getting the name of wrong)

12. Sounds Elvis Costello-ish, except it appears to be from the woman's point of view

OK, the theme I got: Death! Someone dies or gets killed in each song, right? No, not right. In the Flack song, its completely a metaphor. No-one actually has died from hearing Don MacClane sing. I don't think.

2. Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

3. I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew

4. Live and Let Die - Wings

5. Killing Me Softly (With His Song) - Roberta Flack

6. Nope

7. Nope

8. Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles

9. Last Kiss - Pearl Jam covered it.

10. Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult (used to great effect in the miniseries version of "The Stand")

11. Arrrrrggh. I know this, I just can't come up with it.

12. Living Years - Mike + the Mechanics

Theme? I see dead people....
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Spoiler
It's Theme Thursday, which means that each of these 12 songs satisfies some underlying theme.

1 point for the title, 1 for the artist, and 3 for the theme....

1. I'm not your lover
I'm not your friend
I am something that you'll never comprehend

I Would Die For You - Prince

My sister and I were discussing Prince the other day and how, outside of the hair, he looks exactly the same as he did during the Purple Rain days. Good bone structure and all that.

2. Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

I was in grade school when this was popular and we sang a version that was a bit more risque (but not much, despite what we thought. ha!)

3. Is there any just cause for feeling like this
On the surface I'm a name on a list
I try to be discreet, but then blow it again

4. What does it matter to ya?
When you gotta job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hell

Live and Let Die - I'm saying Guns 'n Roses, since their version is the far superior one.

5. I heard he sang a good song, I heard he had a style.
And so I came to see him to listen for a while.
And there he was this young boy, a stranger to my eyes

Killing My Softly With His Song - Roberta Flack

This was so great in About a Boy, I watched that dumb movie 395876033 times just for this and the title song.

6. Here I go,
Hey Hey!
Here comes the devil,
Right Behind.

And When I Die - Blood, Sweat and Tears

7. The street was deserted late Friday night
We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light
We both popped the clutch when the light turned green
You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

Dead Man's Curve - Jan and Dean

8. Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care

Eleanor Rigby - Beatles

9. Well, when I woke up, the rain was pourin' down.
There were people standing all around.
Something warm running in my eyes,
but I found my baby somehow that night

Last Kiss - J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers

10. Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday...Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday

Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

11. If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.

Rock and Roll Heaven - The Righteous Brothers
