wire coat hangers.
As far as $7.5 K question and the comment about teaching states and capitals:
Spoiler
In Birmingham they may love the guv'nor, but that's possibly because he lives in Montgomery.
10K - I really don't know this one.

12.5 - It seems they were conflating with Garfield.

15 - States come back to bite.

After the Expert said that not-nice (and somewhat true) stuff about Michigan and its' track record with industry (see GM and Chrysler) I wanted to reach into my TV and slap him silly. I knew the answer cold, BTW.

She never said that she thought Birmingham was the capital of Alabama. I interpreted her "states and capitals" as verbal shorthand for "I make my students learn all the states' capitals and official birds, flowers, minerals, and so forth." She knew where Birmingham was located, and she correctly identified the state. That's what the question asked. That's all she had to do.

I knew the $15K question simply because he represented the district I live in before he jumped to the White House.

What kind of an answer are you looking for? While others may have jumped to the same conclusion that you did, your comments seemed more directly personal and insulting toward the contestant. When I watched the show, I interpreted her words differently than you did, so I believe there is insufficient evidence to be so harsh about her. I'm not on anybody's "case."

(No, I don't know this contestant or anything else about her beyond what was aired.)

Answer
A: Illinois ( 12)
I'd have gone with Illinois.

All in all I'd say she was smarter than most fifth graders (the ones on the show don't count because they're given study materials in advance).
