Lyrically Speaking - 1/9/08

#1 Post by Bitter Beer Face » Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:36 am

When LB asked me to unpucker my face and write an LS game for him, I knew exactly what it would be about. After all, LB's a big fan of the commercials of his day, and what's more, thanks to all those sell-outs in the music biz, he was able to expand his musical knowledge and hear songs he had never heard before just by turning on the TV.

Below are 12 songs that LB heard for the very first time in a TV commercial. You get the usual 1 point each for the artist and title, but you also get 1 point for correctly identifying the company or product that was being advertised in the commercial LB first heard the song in. For the record, one company/product does appear twice, but that's no surprise since there are some businesses out there that have made a living out of turning classic songs into TV jingles....

Also, please note that the majotity of these commercials aired sometime during the last 15 years. There is one from the 80's, but in general, don't strain your brain back too far....

1. It's a long time to be gone
Time just rolls on and on
When you need a shoulder to cry on
When you get so sick of trying

2. Now because you wear all those fancy clothes (oh yeah)
And have a big fine car, oh yes you do now
Do you think I can afford to give you my love (oh yeah)
You think you're higher than every star above

3. Believe me
You really don't have to worry
I only want to make you happy
And if you say,
hey, go away, I will

4. The earth says "Hello"
You twinkle above us
We twinkle below

5. Old teenage hopes are alive at your door
Left you with nothing but they want some more

6. Baby, baby let's get together
Honey, honey me and you
And do the things, oh, do the things
That we like to do

7. See, don't ever set me free,
I always want to be by your side

8. You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies
You're always asking what it's all about
Now listen to my replies

9. I don't wanna be a tiger
'cause tigers play too rough
I don't wanna be a lion
'cause lions ain't the kind you love enough

10. Here comes Johnny Yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And a flesh machine
He's gonna do another strip tease

11. I drew a line,
I drew a line for you,
Oh what a thing to do

12. We have the natural feeling
Obviously revealing
Let me be your paper man
I’d love to be your joker man
We both are here to have the fun

Damn, can't get that last one! It'll probably dawn on me sometime today, but I'm tired of posting answers around midnight.

I thought I'd do better with the commercials.

Where's the new Taco Bell commercial with Joe Jackson's "One More Time"? Or the Nissan ad with The Clash's version of "Pressure Drop"?
Enjoy every sandwich

I've never heard these lines sung, by the way, but the use of this song for the cruise line is notorious in some circles

I see (or hear) these stupid ads constantly, but wouldn't you know it? I haven't seen one of them all day long! I think my problem actually is that I listen to tv more than I watch it, so I know the commercials, just not what they're for. Ha!

I'm not sure if what type of product is enough or you want the actual company, so I'll just ramble on and hope I give enough for credit but not enough to hang myself.

PS Would it have killed you to use Melt with You? I even gave a trivia remark on that one in a previous LS.

1. It's a long time to be gone
Time just rolls on and on
When you need a shoulder to cry on
When you get so sick of trying

Hold on Tight to Your Dream - ELO

Some car company, it was also on an episode of My Name is Earl last season. Does a sitcom qualify as a product?

2. Now because you wear all those fancy clothes (oh yeah)
And have a big fine car, oh yes you do now
Do you think I can afford to give you my love (oh yeah)
You think you're higher than every star above

Mister Big Stuff - I don't know, I want to say the woman that does The Name Game, but I can't even remember her name.

Pizza - whatever one has the stuffed crust, Pizza Hut?

3. Believe me
You really don't have to worry
I only want to make you happy
And if you say,
hey, go away, I will

I Think I Love You - Partridge Family

Now this one is the one bugging me the most because I can "almost" see the commercial. Some incongruous pairing. I'll say Soft Drink.

4. The earth says "Hello"
You twinkle above us
We twinkle below

Good Morning Starshine - Oliver

Automobiles (although I might be thinking that because they sang it in a car in Hair)

5. Old teenage hopes are alive at your door
Left you with nothing but they want some more

1234 - Feist (You Oughta Know artist Suzanne Feist, yay!)

I hope it's Ipod, they show the video on one, but I'm not sure that's what the commercial is for.

6. Baby, baby let's get together
Honey, honey me and you
And do the things, oh, do the things
That we like to do

Get Down Tonight - KC and the Sunshine Band

I have no idea, so I'll just guess Beer.

7. See, don't ever set me free,
I always want to be by your side

You Really Got Me - Kinks

Automobiles

8. You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies
You're always asking what it's all about
Now listen to my replies

Unbelievable - EMF
(Epsom Mad Funkers, thank you Bill Shatner!)

Kraft Crumbles!!1 I actually got this one by singing the stupid lyrics about that big cheese taste until I got to the Crumbelievable! part.

9. I don't wanna be a tiger
'cause tigers play too rough
I don't wanna be a lion
'cause lions ain't the kind you love enough

(Let Me Be) Your Teddy Bear - Elvis Presley

Total guess on Snuggle Fabric Softener for the obvious reason

10. Here comes Johnny Yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And a flesh machine
He's gonna do another strip tease

Lust for Life - Iggy Pop yay!!

Some cruise line, it cracks me up everytime. My mouth actually dropped open the first time I saw it a few years ago that they were using this song.

11. I drew a line,
I drew a line for you,
Oh what a thing to do

No Idea - and I was at least doing so well on the song portion today...

12. We have the natural feeling
Obviously revealing
Let me be your paper man
I’d love to be your joker man
We both are here to have the fun

Oddly enough, the same as #11.

Okay, I've now looked at all the answers hoping that SOMEBODY would have the answer for #3 because it's bugging the crap out of me. I don't know if I can wait for tomorrow. At least lb is anal about doing answers and points right away, yay!

Also I see that I'm not the only one who knows the

idiotic words to #8, ad agencies should take note that people remember the product better when you change the words to suit the product.
Glad it's also not me that is confounded as to how
Spoiler
#10 made it into any commercial at all, let alone for a company like that.

1. It's a long time to be gone
Time just rolls on and on
When you need a shoulder to cry on
When you get so sick of trying
Hold On Tight - Electric Light Orchestra - Honda (A fairly recent ad)

2. Now because you wear all those fancy clothes (oh yeah)
And have a big fine car, oh yes you do now
Do you think I can afford to give you my love (oh yeah)
You think you're higher than every star above
Mr. Big Stuff - Jean Knight - Burger King (This was part of their mid-90's campaign where pretty much all of their commercials featured some old song accompanied to pictures of the Whopper)

3. Believe me
You really don't have to worry
I only want to make you happy
And if you say,
hey, go away, I will
I Think I Love You - Partridge Family - Levi's jeans (This was a very famous ad from the 90's where this guy and girl meet in an elevator, and all of a sudden the guy starts flashing forward to love, marriage, and having a baby)

4. The earth says "Hello"
You twinkle above us
We twinkle below
Good Morning Starshine - Oliver - Burger King (Same ad campaign as #2, but this one is particularly memorable because when it gets to the "glippy gloop droopy" or whatever they're saying part, there's some text on the screen, within which is the word "Groovy" which is wiggling back and forth in some colorful, psychadelic way. My sisters picked up on this and for a while after this commercial aired would always wave their arms and say "Groovy!" I am not the only weird one in my family....)

5. Old teenage hopes are alive at your door
Left you with nothing but they want some more
1 2 3 4 - Feist - iPod (If you haven't seen this ad, you're either not watching television or skipping over the commercials, which are almost always the best part of watching TV...)

6. Baby, baby let's get together
Honey, honey me and you
And do the things, oh, do the things
That we like to do
Get Down Tonight - KC & the Sunshine Band - Budweiser (It may have been Bud Light, but it's all the same. This was the ad where the ants raid the picnic and carry the bottle of Bud back to their anthill and squeeze it through the hole)

7. See, don't ever set me free,
I always want to be by your side
You Really Got Me - The Kinks or Van Halen - Nissan (And it's the Van Halen version I'm concerned with here, which was famously featured in the Nissan ad with the Gi Joe and Barbie dolls... and of course, that Asian guy who used to say "Dogs... love... trucks!" I had heard the Kinks version prior to this ad, but had never heard the VH version. Since then, I've heard it so much I want to throw up...)

8. You burden me with your questions
You'd have me tell no lies
You're always asking what it's all about
Now listen to my replies
Unbelievable - EMF - Major League Baseball (But since so many people said Kraft, and I seem to have a recall of hearing that "Crumbelievable" line, I went ahead and accepted it even though that wasn't where I first heard this song. The ad I was seeking was an MLB ad promoting the sport in, I'm pretty sure it was 1993, and was run on ESPN all the friggin' time)

9. I don't wanna be a tiger
'cause tigers play too rough
I don't wanna be a lion
'cause lions ain't the kind you love enough
Teddy Bear - Elvis Presley - Teddy Grahams (This was the 80's reference. They changed the word Bear to Grahams and created a classic ad from my childhood)

10. Here comes Johnny Yen again
With the liquor and drugs
And a flesh machine
He's gonna do another strip tease
Lust For Life - Iggy Pop - Royal Carribbean Cruises (I used this song in an earlier LS, I believe my '04 game, and drew crickets because I used a lesser known part of the song about hypnotizing chickens. Most people recognized the intro though, and knew it was in a cruise line commercial, though about half got the wrong company)

11. I drew a line,
I drew a line for you,
Oh what a thing to do
Yellow - Coldplay - ABC (If you watched WWTBAM back in the day, you saw these ABC Yellow ads. This was ABC's campaign for the Fall 2000 television season)

12. We have the natural feeling
Obviously revealing
Let me be your paper man
I’d love to be your joker man
We both are here to have the fun
Let It Whip - The Dazz Band - Tampax!!! (Yes, this song sold tampons. I almost gave melly a point for being the only one to even have a recollection of the commercial, though she forgot what it was advertising. It featured a group of African American cheerleaders dancing to this song, and aired sometime in either 1999 or early 2000. I'm sure of the timeframe, because the first time I ever heard this song on the radio was in March of 2000 when the station I was listening to was in the middle of its disco craze. When I first heard that familiar intro, I about peed my pants and said out loud, "The Tampax Song!" To this day, I still always refer to it as The Tampax Song, which should be a lesson to those musicians out there that if you're gonna sell out your music, maybe it's a wise idea to steer clear of something that may end up being embarrassing way down the road.

BTW, in the coincidence to end all coincidences, last night I heard this song used in another commercial for the first time, though I can't remember what it was. It doesn't matter, because Let It Whip is always gonna be The Tampax Song to me...
