Full Disclosure

#1 Post by tubadave » Sat Oct 13, 2007 12:56 pm

So just the other day, someone from the Bored sent me a PM asking a few questions about what I can and cannot do as the owner of the webspace in which the Bored is hosted. Wanting to answer them all as honestly as possible, I set about doing a bit of research. In my previous explanation post (which is no longer sticky) I mentioned that admins could not see your password or read your PM's, which I already knew to be true.

The BB in question asked if I (as the owner, not as an admin) could read PM's. My instinct was to respond, "of course not!" but I thought about it for a moment....while I've had admin/moderator rights on phpBB boards before, I've never actually hosted one on my own webspace. I thought I'd better check more closely before answering. So, I did.

PM's, unlike passwords, are not encrypted. I can't see who wrote what, but I can read them. This applies to PM's that are currently saved in your account, either in your Inbox, Sent folder, whatever. However, if you delete them, they're gone, and they're no longer in the database.

I considered keeping this information to myself for about 0.000000013 seconds, but then decided that everyone should know. All of you are placing a certain level of trust in me by residing in a place that I have control over, and I take that very seriously. I can't imagine many scenarios in which I would find it necessary to look at the PM's in the database (I get sued and someone subpoenas the database? Someone breaks in to my apartment, holds me at gunpoint, and tells me I have to look?) I'll go on the record now and say that I have no intention of ever looking at them, period.

I hope everyone who wants to will still choose to utilize the PM feature on this site, but only if you feel comfortable doing so.

So, there you are. Don't hesitate to post your questions and concerns or PM me.

But, if it's a PM, how will you be able to read it when you've said you won't be reading anyone's PMs?

I don't consider this information threatening, it's not like I use PMs for extremely clandestine and sensitive information, only for things I don't think are needed to be posted publicly.

Psssst. Bob! 'Gor. Beast and Confessor. Quick, clean out your PMs before he finds out about the coup. --Bob

I've only made one so far, and I'm looking for an avatar for him. Any idea where I can find a mosquito sucking blood until it explodes?

Yeah, if you can get to a casino with a Tabasco video slot machine.

I have no idea why I know that....

Ha! So you know I'm looking for your attorney!

That's why I was looking for the mosquito--I've played that slot machine! I figured a leech was too obscure. And the location will be "Behind an ambulance", so that animation will be perfect, and would drive Marley up a tree. Can we shrink it?

I had no luck using the shrinkpictures site on my Bored Sweeper avatar, yet surprisingly this place took it despite it being a tad too big. If it doesn't, have Mr. Leech threaten Dave with a multi million dollar lawsuit....

Pfft. Congratulations, your lawsuit wins you about $20, a few pieces of furniture, and a room full of mostly outdated computer equipment. That LCD TV in the other room isn't mine. It's, um, borrowed from a friend. Yeah, that's it.

You silly people have hijacked my very serious thread. I shall have my revenge:
