$10,000 * CELEBRITY Q
As Sarah Palin would certainly know, Kazuo Kawasaki is a Japanese designer of high-end what?

A: Shoes B: Suits
C: Eyeglasses D: Hats

Julia: I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but I want to be certain.

With 16 seconds left, Julia Asks The Expert. Today's expert is Greg Proops, the host of "Head Games" on the Science Channel.

Greg: Well, Sarah Palin does not wear a lot of hats, Julia, so I'm going to eliminate D. Kazuo Kawasaki--she does wear eyeglasses and she's noted for her shoes. I'm gonna lean more towards those. I don't actually know, so I have to be honest with you. I don't know what she is a high-end maker of, but I will say that I think shoes and eyeglasses are the way to go on this.

Julia: You wouldn't go with suits?

Greg: Could you? She's not so famous for her suits and she is for her eyeglasses and shoes. That's why I'm leaning toward that, because the question leans toward that.

Julia: Well, I was thinking that it had to be--

Greg: She never wears tops(?).

Julia: I was thinking that it had to be suits or eyeglasses. I was not thinking shoes.

Greg: Ah. Well, you may well be right. I honestly couldn't tell you.

Julia: I'm going to go with my first instinct, which was suits.

Meredith: Final answer?

Julia: Umm, no, eyeglasses, final answer.

Answer
C: Eyeglasses ( 5 )
Meredith: Now, why did you change your mind?

Julia: It had to be one of the two, but I used my Double Dip, already.

$12,500 * Everyday Objects
The coarse "striking surface" on a matchbox is typically coated with the red form of what element?

A: Magnesium B: Phosphorus
C: Mercury D: Iodine

Julia walks with $10,000.
Answer
B: Phosphorus ( 12 )

That was an ugly dog, IMO.

I wasn't aware that Palin was famous for her shoes as well as her glasses.

Which doesn't really answer the question, does it? But it does explain why she burned the lifeline. She wasn't as sure as she said.

I have a feeling Greg would have known this one.

There was also a pause and a blank look before this non-answer. I suspect that Julia heard some audience rumbling after she went with "suits" and decided to switch based on that reaction. I couldn't detect anything obvious on the audio, but the audience seemed to laugh knowingly as soon as she switched. Meredith's tone when she questioned the change may have indicated she knew as well. I say more power to Julia if she pulled off an extra ATA, but only getting to 10K with it seems a bit of an underachievement.

I put rug treads on mine. It cost me under $300 and they look nice against the dark hardwood.

Julia's appearance got a brief mention near the end of this column--after a notice that "The Natural" is being released on Blu-Ray but before a question about a substitute traffic reporter on Buffalo's Channel 2.
