NBC Rocks === Not!

Apparently, NBC has still not learned its lesson since the Jay Leno debacle. The latest from the Peacock Network is that they intend to do a remake of the James Ganer series The Rock ford Files starring Dermot Mulroney.

On a scale of 1-10 for idiotic ideas, this one has to rank about 800. The Rockford Files only one thing, a showcase for James Garner. It certainly wasn't an enduring detective show. And while there might possibly be another actor somewhere who could recreate Garner's wit and charm, Dermot Mulroney ain't it.

Considering that they are using The Marriage Ref to fill the Thursday 10 p.m. spot that once was NBC's crown jewel, the spot that was filled by, in order, Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, and E.R., I think it's clear that whoever is programming NBC has lost their marbles. --Bob

I saw this.

I can't for the life of me imagine how anyone thinks this is a good idea.

TV execs must be so insular- they never seem to lack for stupid ideas like this.

Whenever I see a comment like this, I always think of Harlan Ellison's story of the movie execs trying to come up with a concept. And one of them pipes up "I've got it! Let's do The Wiz ... white!"

I'm such a James Garner fan, I bought the entire Maverick series. Rockford files, not so much.

Still, I have sympathy for NBC. If there was a lesson to be learned from the Leno debacle, it's that people don't want to watch a variety show five nights a week at that hour. I see a new Rockford as an indicator that NBC learned it. Also, all y'all who hate reality shows should be pleased that there will be another non-reality offering.

And I won't give this anymore than a 1 or 2 on the idiotic ideas scale. Sure, there are fans like me, where the only reason we would watch Rockford would be because of Garner. But there's a whole new generation to be gained as an audience for an updated version -- more sex, more violence, and hopefully a great new dad. I think Mulroney and the show will be fine.

You know, if they'd really like an idea for filling out their lineup.....

This is where I am forced to say something about "LIFE" . It was one of my favorite TV shows ever, canceled last year after two seasons, just because I was the only one watching. Great quality programing, ignored by NBC. Starred Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi. Garrett Delahunt as Roman Nevikov was a great bad guy. Christina Hendricks provided eye candy and some good acting.
