Lyrically Speaking - 1/7/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Jan 07, 2008 6:57 am

It's Match Game Monday. The following 12 songs can be paired up into 6 matches based on some underlying theme. I used this theme before in the December 2004 LS, except this time I added a few new matches and of course shuffled up the songs I used before.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 1 point for each correct match, which may be guessed at even without correctly answering each song.....

1. I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that I got for you, baby
It makes me wanna sing

2. I shoulda learned how to play the guitar
I shoulda learned how to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera
Man we could have some fun

3. Worlds are turning and we're just hanging on
Facing our fear and standing out there alone
A yearning, and it's real to me
There must be someone who's feeling for me

4. People always told me be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts

5. Every time I see your smile
Give you a hello, can you stay a while
Heaven knows it time for you to say the things
We both know are true

6. She likes the boys in the band
She says that I'm her all-time favorite
When I make my move to her room it's the right time
She's never hard to please

7. I get frightened in all this darkness
I get nightmares I hate to sleep alone
I need some company a guardian angel
To keep me warm when the cold winds blow

8. When I'm in the shower I'm afraid to wash my hair
Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there

9. How could it be that what you need the most
Can leave you feeling just like a ghost?
You never want to feel so sad and lost again

10. So won't you say you love me,
I'll make you so proud of me.
We'll make 'em turn their heads every place we go

11. Are you gonna wait for a sign, your miracle?
Stand up and fight.

12. Girl I've seen you in clubs just hanging out and dancing.
You give your number to every man you see.
You never come home at night because you're out romancing.
I wish you bring some of your love home to me.

Grrrr. I get the gist, but not enough songs to match up well. And I know this sucker will self-destruct before I get back here, so I can't think any longer....

1. I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that I got for you, baby
It makes me wanna sing

I Feel For You, I'll put Chaka Khan version, since she has the guy rapping at the beginning...

2. I shoulda learned how to play the guitar
I shoulda learned how to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera
Man we could have some fun

Money For Nothing, Dire Straits

3. Worlds are turning and we're just hanging on
Facing our fear and standing out there alone
A yearning, and it's real to me
There must be someone who's feeling for me

No, but I'll put Sting because I need him...

4. People always told me be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts

Billie Jean, Michael Jackson

5. Every time I see your smile
Give you a hello, can you stay a while
Heaven knows it time for you to say the things
We both know are true

No, but I want Michael McDonald, so I'll give him this song

6. She likes the boys in the band
She says that I'm her all-time favorite
When I make my move to her room it's the right time
She's never hard to please

SuperFreak, Rick James

7. I get frightened in all this darkness
I get nightmares I hate to sleep alone
I need some company a guardian angel
To keep me warm when the cold winds blow

Familiar

8. When I'm in the shower I'm afraid to wash my hair
Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there

Somebody's Watching Me, I think he went by Rockwell and was the relative of some record exec. Nepotism City.

9. How could it be that what you need the most
Can leave you feeling just like a ghost?
You never want to feel so sad and lost again

Familiar

10. So won't you say you love me,
I'll make you so proud of me.
We'll make 'em turn their heads every place we go

Familiar

11. Are you gonna wait for a sign, your miracle?
Stand up and fight.

This Is It, Kenny Loggins

12. Girl I've seen you in clubs just hanging out and dancing.
You give your number to every man you see.
You never come home at night because you're out romancing.

My Girl Wants to Party All the Time, Eddie Murphy

So we match up the guy who guested on the other guys' song. And it's mostly guys here.

I'll put #1 and #7 (WAG)

#4 and #8 (I know one!)
#5 and #11
#6 and #12 (Two now!)
#9 and #10

Spoiler
1. I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that I got for you, baby
It makes me wanna sing
I Feel For You - Chaka Khan (w/ Mellie Mel) or Prince

2. I shoulda learned how to play the guitar
I shoulda learned how to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera
Man we could have some fun
Money for Nothing - Dire Straits (btw, I think that "fun" at the end is one of those things that shows up in the printed lyrics, but never actually gets sung. But maybe I'm wrong.)

3. Worlds are turning and we're just hanging on
Facing our fear and standing out there alone
A yearning, and it's real to me
There must be someone who's feeling for me
Higher Love - Stevie Winwood

4. People always told me be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

5. Every time I see your smile
Give you a hello, can you stay a while
Heaven knows it time for you to say the things
We both know are true
I Keep Forgetting - Michael McDonald

6. She likes the boys in the band
She says that I'm her all-time favorite
When I make my move to her room it's the right time
She's never hard to please
Superfreak - Rick James, Dammit

7. I get frightened in all this darkness
I get nightmares I hate to sleep alone
I need some company a guardian angel
To keep me warm when the cold winds blow
Take Me Home Tonight - Eddie Money

8. When I'm in the shower I'm afraid to wash my hair
Cause I might open my eyes and find someone standing there
Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell

9. How could it be that what you need the most
Can leave you feeling just like a ghost?
You never want to feel so sad and lost again
?

10. So won't you say you love me,
I'll make you so proud of me.
We'll make 'em turn their heads every place we go
Be My Baby - Ronnie and the Ronettes

11. Are you gonna wait for a sign, your miracle?
Stand up and fight.
?

12. Girl I've seen you in clubs just hanging out and dancing.
You give your number to every man you see.
You never come home at night because you're out romancing.
I wish you bring some of your love home to me.
Party All the Time - Eddie Murphy

OK. I was going to put Eddie Money with Money for Nothing, until I saw the Ronnie Spector song, and I know she sang on Take Me Home Tonight.

So that means 7 and 10 match up.
I know that Rick James sang on Party All the Time so that makes 12 and 6 match up.
I know Sting sang on Money for Nothing, but I don't have a Sting song yet.
I know that Michael Jackson sang on Somebody's Watching Me (Rockwell, I think, was really Kennedy Gordy, some relation to Barry), so that means 4 and 8
That leaves 5 more songs, 3 that I know and 2 that I don't:
It just stands to reason that Michael McDonald and Steve Winwood would guest on each other's songs - they both have a ton of musical talent and yet choose to do this utterly harmless, worthless, soulless crap, so 3 and 5.
So clearly #9 or #11 must be by Sting, and #9 sounds more pretentious and annoying, so let's go with #9 and #2.
#11 could be by anybody, and Mellie Mel or Chaka Khan (or Prince, for that matter) could be on almost anything, so #1 and #11

Party All the Time ... Eddie Murphy

BONUS:

OK, so, Michael Jackson performed on the Rockwell song, so that's 4 and 8. That's the only one I have cold. So if that's the theme, then Rick James must show up somewhere else on this list, and that can only mean that awful Eddie Murphy song, which has got to be a 6-12 match. And if Take Me Home Tonight is on there, then there's got to be a Ronnettes song on the list as well, and I only know one Ronnettes song, and 10 fits the bill, so a 7-10 match. Money for Nothing could go both ways, but I'll bet it's a Sting match rather than a Mark Knopfler one, so what sounds like a Sting song? Ooh. Isn't that Brand New Day? If I sing the words real fast, it sounds kind of Stingy. So that's 2 and 9. Number 1 is tough, because I can't find any other songs that Prince would have performed on. Did he ever perform on anybody else's songs? Or did he just couple with women who in turn performed his songs? Hey, wait a sec--I just realized that the words are all spelled out in this sample! So it's not I Feel 4 U by Prince, it's I Feel for You by Chaka Khan! Well, I know Chaka's sung on lots of other songs, but I can't seem to pull any at the moment. Let's check out the last one. OK, Kenny Loggins. Wasn't there a lot of cross-pollenation between him and Michael McDonald at one point? Don't know if it was on this song or not, but that's the best I can come up with. Of the two lyrics left, I can't pick out a Michael McDonald song, and I'm kind of proud of myself for that, but that doesn't help me solve this puzzle. No. 3 resonates a little, and its meter matches, kind of, that song from Running Scared. So I'll match 3 with 11. That leaves Chaka with whatever is at No. 5, which could be Whitney Houston. Or Kanye West. Or James Brown in The Blues Brothers. The lyric is familiar, but I can't crack it. So I'll just be content to match 1 with 5 and hope for the best. Thanks Beast!

OK, 7 and 10 have to go together (since Ronnie Spector was featured on "Take Me Home Tonight"). So somewhere in there has to be a Sting song (to go with #2), and a Chaka Khan song (to go with #3). I got nothin' on the others.

1. I wouldn't lie to you, baby
It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that I got for you, baby
It makes me wanna sing

Spoiler
1. Umm, no

2. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits w/ Sting

3. Higher Love - Steve Winwood w/ Chaka Khan

4. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

5. No, again

6. Super Freak - Rick James

7. Take Me Home Tonight (Be My Baby) - Eddie Money w/ Ronnie Spector

8. Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell w/ Michael Jackson

9. No.

10. Be My Baby - The Ronettes

11. No

12. No

Ok, I see the theme, now just need to match up the ones that I do know and also the ones that I don't.

4 - 8
7 - 10
2 - 9 (Closest thing that sounds like Sting)
3 - 1 (WAG)
5 - 11 (WAG)
6 - 12 (WAG)

I'm just hoping that I'm not missing some Phil Spector or Qunicy Jones matchups
Enjoy every sandwich

Party All the Time - Eddie Murphy

The theme, as most people figured out, was songs that contained another famous backup singer in them matching up with songs by that other artist.

1-3 - Chaka Khan backed up Winwood on Higher Love

2-9 - Sting did the famous "I want my MTV" line in Money for Nothing (I had quite a V8 moment when I first heard that fact on VH1 Classic a few years ago... and even put it in the QoD I was doing at the time)

4-8 - Jacko sang the chorus of Somebody's Watching Me, and for all intents and purposes, the song was a hit because of him, and despite the long-forgotten Rockwell...

5-11 - McDonald backed up Loggins in This Is It. I could have also used Christopher Cross' Ride Like the Wind...

6-12 - Rick James walked Eddie Murphy through Party All the Time, and even sang a few lines for him

7-10 - Ronnie Spector sings for Eddie Money in Take Me Home Tonight

IIRC, Ronnie Spector looked so good in that Eddie Money video. But, because I forgot the song. :D
