Annie has an appointment to see the surgeon -- a "soft tissue and vascular specialist" -- this afternoon in far north Oklahoma City. I don't know if they will keep her there or if I'll have to bring her back to the hospital in Norman and take her back up at a later date.

Nevertheless, it's one step closer to her getting better.

The surgeon kept her, being more immediately concerned about the swelling in her leg than the lack of skin on her back. So, Annie's leg will be somehow drained, investigated, or otherwise touched by healing hands this afternoon. The surgeon does not think the skin grafts even will be necessary. They have devoped some other techique that they have used with great success on dog gun-shot victims (to whom they kept comparing Annie. Urg.) The new technique means that Annie will get home sooner, although I'll have to keep driving her back and forth for approximately six weeks. (This place couldn't be any father north in Oklahoma City without having a Kansas zip code.) That's okay. I can buy a lot of gas for what a day in the operating room and post-operative care would cost.

With her new pain patch, Annie did seem to be feeling a little better today. She walked to and got in the car by herself. Then, she stood up the whole way so she could look at everything we passed. She liked the ride, but standing for nearly an hour probably was what helped her leg swell further. She also had a lot to say. It was good to hear her voice.

She may even get a weekend pass. I would pick her up on Friday and take her back Monday morning.

As always, I read these updates with much hope and warm wishes. The latest news sounds encouraging. It appears she is in good hands and abilities.

The best, of course, still being her mom's.

Good news to hear that Annie will be getting a weekend furlough to Che Camaro!

I think that going home will make her the happiest.

Silvercam: Is the sloughed skin a reaction to one of the antibiotics? Or something that happens to infected dogs (but not infected people)? I am way too familiar with people-skin-ulcers, but that's an obvious & localized infection (unless you believe those dermatologists who think everything involving skin is autoimmune reactions), & people-cellulitus, where the skin is red & inflamed over a wide area (due to whatever!), but still not sloughing off by itself.

I don't think it's a drug reaction, as she had identical or similar antibiotics after the surgery following her traffic accident. I suspect (and this my personal conjecture without the benefit of medical training) that the skin on her back may have been stretched to close the wound more tightly than it could handle, circulation was compromised, and the tissue died. At that site (the worst of her wounds), the skin wasn't simply torn, but a large chunk was missing entirely. If that's the case, I don't fault the original emergency surgeon, as that area needed to be closed as quickly as possible, and it was worth a try.

Supposedly, skin-sloughing is not uncommon in dogs following injury or certain kinds of bacterial or fungal infections.
