Lyrically Speaking - 1/4/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 6:24 am

It's Free For All Friday, which is the Lyrically Speaking version of Potpourri. All of today's songs were playing on one of the wide variety of Music Choice channels I have on cable when I wrote this game on December 25th. Since this is the weekend game, there are 20 songs, and the game does not close until Monday morning.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. A man walks down the street
He says why am I short of attention
Got a short little span of attention
And woe my nights are so long

2. You and me girl got a highway to the sky
We can turn away from the night and day
And the tears you had to cry
You're my life..

3. And if she says to you
she doesn't love me
just give her my message
tell her of my plea

4. Baby, baby why can't you sit still?
Who killed that bird out on you window sill?
Are you the reason that he broke his back?
Did I see you laugh about that?

5. She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark
And when the sky is starless

6. Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me
Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams

7. They were funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up and they were chopping them down

8. Come on and dance, come on and dance
Let's make some romance
You know the night is fallin'
And the music's callin'

9. We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
from the juices of the dying

10. We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age

11. Well, I can say goodbye in the cold morning light
But I can't watch love die in the warmth of the night
If I've got to be strong
Don't you know I need to have tonight when you're gone?

12. Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don't want to play no more with you
It's true

13. My friends are always giving me
Watches, hats, and wine
That’s how I know this is serious
That’s how I know it's time

14. I wanna bite the hand that feeds me
I wanna bite that hand so badly
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me

15. I can't stop
The way I feel
Things you do
Don't seem real

16. And when the sun comes up
I'll be on top
You'll be way down there
Lookin' up
And I might wave
Come up here

17. Deeper and deeper, help ya reach the
Climax that your man can't make
Call him, tell him you'll be home real late
Now sing the break

18. So I look in your direction,
But you pay me no attention, do you.
I know you dont listen to me.
cause you say you see straight through me, dont you.

19. They wake at dawn 'cos all the birds are singing,
Two total strangers but that ain't what they're thinking.
Outside it's cold misty and it's raining,
They got each other neither one's complaining

20. Life's too short to make a mistake
Let's think of each other and hesitate
Young and impatient we may be
There's no need to act foolishly

So I have a shot of answering an open LS for a change....... :P

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. A man walks down the street
He says why am I short of attention
Got a short little span of attention
And woe my nights are so long

Call Me Al? Something like that. Paul Simon

2. You and me girl got a highway to the sky
We can turn away from the night and day
And the tears you had to cry
You're my life..

It's the Bee Gees. Or Andy Gibb. But I'll say Bee Gees. Can't quite place the song yet...

3. And if she says to you
she doesn't love me
just give her my message
tell her of my plea

Nope

4. Baby, baby why can't you sit still?
Who killed that bird out on you window sill?
Are you the reason that he broke his back?
Did I see you laugh about that?

Black Crowes. Dug out this CD the other day. Not Hard to Handle or She Talks to Angels.

5. She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark
And when the sky is starless

Rhiannon, Stevie Nicks. Amazing how many forms of that name end up in the kids' yearbooks to this day...

6. Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me
Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams

Relax, Frankie Goes to Hollywood

7. They were funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up and they were chopping them down

Kung Fu Fighting, and I can never remember the guy's name..

8. Come on and dance, come on and dance
Let's make some romance
You know the night is fallin'
And the music's callin'

Yicko Steve Miller Band. Swingtown or Swing Town or whatever...

9. We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
from the juices of the dying

Uh, no.

10. We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age

I have never been a fan of Eagles' solo efforts, but I really like this song very much. The Heart of the Matter, Don Henley

11. Well, I can say goodbye in the cold morning light
But I can't watch love die in the warmth of the night
If I've got to be strong
Don't you know I need to have tonight when you're gone?

Familiar, but not shaking loose.

12. Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don't want to play no more with you
It's true

My b-i-l has this Greatest Hits CD, and it was surprisingly entertaining listening after all these years. So sue me...

Sister Christian, Night Ranger

13. My friends are always giving me
Watches, hats, and wine
That’s how I know this is serious
That’s how I know it's time

Nope

14. I wanna bite the hand that feeds me
I wanna bite that hand so badly
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me

Okay, a gimme! Radio, Radio, Elvis Costello (Can't just say Elvis this time...)

15. I can't stop
The way I feel
Things you do
Don't seem real

She Drives Me Crazy, Fine Young Cannibals

16. And when the sun comes up
I'll be on top
You'll be way down there
Lookin' up
And I might wave
Come up here

Familiar

17. Deeper and deeper, help ya reach the
Climax that your man can't make
Call him, tell him you'll be home real late
Now sing the break

I don't suppose I would know this...

18. So I look in your direction,
But you pay me no attention, do you.
I know you dont listen to me.
cause you say you see straight through me, dont you.

It's Coldplay, but I don't know which song.

19. They wake at dawn 'cos all the birds are singing,
Two total strangers but that ain't what they're thinking.
Outside it's cold misty and it's raining,
They got each other neither one's complaining

Do Ya Think I'm Sexy (and don't answer that :P ), Rod Stewart

20. Life's too short to make a mistake
Let's think of each other and hesitate
Young and impatient we may be
There's no need to act foolishly

A Little More Time? One of those Beach Music songs. I think it's that one. Dunno the artist.

Long day with eighth graders who are still trying to get back on track following Christmas Break. I then headed home to get gussied up. If you were watching ESPN Friday Night Fights, you saw me toward the left side of the audience just opposite the main cameras. Our local hero, Allan Green won again! I'm watching the replay right now, and his fight is about to begin.

YAY for this being open for three days! I've been laid low by stomach flu and, when not
Spoiler
puking my guts out
, spent the time bemoaning the fact that I couldn't answer the LS. Ha!
Spoiler
1. A man walks down the street
He says why am I short of attention
Got a short little span of attention
And woe my nights are so long

You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

2. You and me girl got a highway to the sky
We can turn away from the night and day
And the tears you had to cry
You're my life..

Too Much Heaven - Bee Gees

3. And if she says to you
she doesn't love me
just give her my message
tell her of my plea

4. Baby, baby why can't you sit still?
Who killed that bird out on you window sill?
Are you the reason that he broke his back?
Did I see you laugh about that?

I want to say Twice as Hard, but I know that isn't right. But I'm sick so I'm saying it anyway.

Twice as Hard - The Black Crowes

5. She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark
And when the sky is starless

Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac

Who besides me automatically typed Stevie Nicks and had to correct themselves?

6. Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me
Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams

Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

7. They were funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up and they were chopping them down

Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas (although you were probably watching the Foo Fighters)

8. Come on and dance, come on and dance
Let's make some romance
You know the night is fallin'
And the music's callin'

Swingtown - Steve Miller Band

9. We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
from the juices of the dying

Puking Your Guts Out - Gnaeus and The Vomitoriums

10. We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age

11. Well, I can say goodbye in the cold morning light
But I can't watch love die in the warmth of the night
If I've got to be strong
Don't you know I need to have tonight when you're gone?

12. Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don't want to play no more with you
It's true

Sister Christian - Night Ranger

13. My friends are always giving me
Watches, hats, and wine
That’s how I know this is serious
That’s how I know it's time

14. I wanna bite the hand that feeds me
I wanna bite that hand so badly
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me

Radio Radio - Elvis Costello

15. I can't stop
The way I feel
Things you do
Don't seem real

She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals

This is so weird! Thursday morning, during a period of lucidity, I turned on We are the 80's and they were playing this. But that's not the weird part. The weird part is I thought "I wish lb would use this in a LS game, then I could rhetorically ask whatever happened to FYC and why wasn't Roland Gift bigger than he was with all that talent?"

So, consider it asked. Ha!

16. And when the sun comes up
I'll be on top
You'll be way down there
Lookin' up
And I might wave
Come up here

96 Tears - ? and the Mysterians

17. Deeper and deeper, help ya reach the
Climax that your man can't make
Call him, tell him you'll be home real late
Now sing the break

Dammit, it's by Biggie but, if I could sing the damned break, I could tell you the name of it.

Give Me Another Chance - Notorious BIG

18. So I look in your direction,
But you pay me no attention, do you.
I know you dont listen to me.
cause you say you see straight through me, dont you.

19. They wake at dawn 'cos all the birds are singing,
Two total strangers but that ain't what they're thinking.
Outside it's cold misty and it's raining,
They got each other neither one's complaining

Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? - Rod Stewart

20. Life's too short to make a mistake
Let's think of each other and hesitate
Young and impatient we may be
There's no need to act foolishly

It's Free For All Friday, which is the Lyrically Speaking version of Potpourri. All of today's songs were playing on one of the wide variety of Music Choice channels I have on cable when I wrote this game on December 25th. Since this is the weekend game, there are 20 songs, and the game does not close until Monday morning.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

Spoiler
1. You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

2. Nope

3. Heart Full of Soul - The Yardbrids (one of my favorite groups) also Chris Isaak (written by Graham Gouldman of 10cc fame.)

4. Baby, baby why can't you sit still?
Who killed that bird out on you window sill?
Are you the reason that he broke his back?
Did I see you laugh about that?

5. Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac

6. Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

7. Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas

8. Swingtown - The Steve Miller Band

9. This song sounds VERY familiar, something from the 80's

10. Sounds like something by Sting or Don Henley or some other over the hill rocker.

11. Nope

12. Nope

13. Nope

14. Radio Radio - Elvis Costello

15. She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals

16. 96 Tears - ? & the Mysterians also Garland Jefferys

17. Sounds like rap, I generally don't do rap

18. Familiar, but no

19. Do Ya Think I'm Sexy - Rod Stewart (the beginning of the end for Rod the Mod, written by Carmen Appice of Vanilla Fudge fame)

20. Give Me Just a Little More Time - The Chairman of the Board (not Whitey Ford or Sinatra and not The Chairman of the Bored!)
Enjoy every sandwich

1. A man walks down the street
He says why am I short of attention
Got a short little span of attention
And woe my nights are so long
You Can Call Me Al - Paul Simon

2. You and me girl got a highway to the sky
We can turn away from the night and day
And the tears you had to cry
You're my life..
Too Much Heaven - Bee Gees

3. And if she says to you
she doesn't love me
just give her my message
tell her of my plea
Heart Full of Soul - Yardbirds

4. Baby, baby why can't you sit still?
Who killed that bird out on you window sill?
Are you the reason that he broke his back?
Did I see you laugh about that?
Remedy - Black Crowes

5. She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark
And when the sky is starless
Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac (This is the first time I had to invoke the popular solo artist clause... you got credit if you said Stevie Nicks)

6. Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me
Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams
Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood

7. They were funky China men from funky Chinatown
They were chopping them up and they were chopping them down
Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas

8. Come on and dance, come on and dance
Let's make some romance
You know the night is fallin'
And the music's callin'
Swingtown - Steve Miller Band

9. We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
from the juices of the dying
Nemesis - Shriekback (I was really, really hoping someone would get this one. I think TiV was the only one who seemed to even be close. I've seen the video for this one on VH1 Classic a few times, and the chorus contains perhaps the most interesting word to ever be placed in any song ever written.... parthenogenesis, which is the process by which unfertilized eggs are still able to produce an offspring. This song was my first shutout of the Winter LS)

10. We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age
The Heart of the Matter - Don Henley

11. Well, I can say goodbye in the cold morning light
But I can't watch love die in the warmth of the night
If I've got to be strong
Don't you know I need to have tonight when you're gone?
Touch Me In the Morning - Diana Ross

12. Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don't want to play no more with you
It's true
Sister Christian - Night Ranger

13. My friends are always giving me
Watches, hats, and wine
That’s how I know this is serious
That’s how I know it's time
Last Dollar (Fly Away) - Tim McGraw (Melly was the only one to even get the artist on this one. Had I posted the chorus "One, two, three, like a bird I sing...", I think more of you would have recognized it)

14. I wanna bite the hand that feeds me
I wanna bite that hand so badly
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me
Radio Radio - Elvis Costello

15. I can't stop
The way I feel
Things you do
Don't seem real
She Drives Me Crazy - Fine Young Cannibals

16. And when the sun comes up
I'll be on top
You'll be way down there
Lookin' up

Come up here
96 Tears - ? and the Mysterians

17. Deeper and deeper, help ya reach the
Climax that your man can't make
Call him, tell him you'll be home real late
Now sing the break
One More Chance - The Notorious BIG (Who, somehow, is still selling calendars with his mug on them at Wal~Mart 10 years after being shot to death)

18. So I look in your direction,
But you pay me no attention, do you.
I know you dont listen to me.
cause you say you see straight through me, dont you.
Shiver - Coldplay (Mini kept this one from being a shutout by recognizing the group)

19. They wake at dawn 'cos all the birds are singing,
Two total strangers but that ain't what they're thinking.
Outside it's cold misty and it's raining,
They got each other neither one's complaining
Do Ya Think I'm Sexy - Rod Stewart

20. Life's too short to make a mistake
Let's think of each other and hesitate
Young and impatient we may be
There's no need to act foolishly
Give Me Just a Little More Time - Chairmen of the Board

I think it's intersting that despite the extra 8 songs, scoring was pretty much the same as it is in the 12-song games, at least as far as the high scores go. The average was probably a bit higher....
