This will be interesting tomorrow. It is my understanding that aïoli is made of olive oil, garlic, salt and egg. Adding mustard is optional, but not all aïoli contains mustard and, if present, it is certainly a minor ingredient. I assume that is the answer for which they're looking.

You're probably right. I just looked it up on wikipedia. The first two pictures look like what I've seen before, yet the third one (with olives) definitely looks like mayonnaise. Mayonnaise is mentioned in the 2 other regions, but not under Provençal cuisine.

I think that because Provençal aïoli appears to be a garlicky, oily sauce rather than a mayonnaise and because mustard is included as an option and is often added as an ingredient, this question sucks...

Egg and oil and a few flavorings is pretty much all mayonnaise is. I was amused a few years back when there was a recall of some brand of mayo for "unreported eggs" on their ingredient label. Kind of like unreported nuts in a Jif label.
