What a tough question! These are all names of Russian spacecraft. "Traveling companion" is Sputnik (Спутник), the subject of a previous Millionaire question. "Dawn" is Voskhod (Восход), the successor to Vostok (Восток), which means "east." Also, Mir (мир) means "peace." Salyut (Салют) means "salute." There are more of these in Wikipedia. Under the pressure of the HS, I probably would have picked one of the distractors.

Anybody who pays attention to past WWTBAM questions knows that Sputnik translates to "traveling companion", as that was asked as a $250,000 question in 2000, so that narrows it down to A and D. I was pretty sure that union was the correct answer. Going by what little I know about the Russian language, I know that the "S" sound in Russian is represented by the Cyrillic "C" and that what we call "USSR" is written in Russian as "CCCP", which does literally mean "Union Soviet Socialist Republic".

The Blarney Stone is in Blarney Castle, just outside Cork, which is a short distance from the port city of Cobh. Climbing the stairs to get to the top and "kiss the stone" is not for the claustrophobic. It gets more narrow as you climb to the top. (Having kissed the stone myself in June, 2008).

I lived in Ireland back in the early 70's and have been back many times. The one tourist location I never visited was Blarney Castle even though I lived in Cork City. I did hike the Old Head of Kinsale before it was turned into a golf course.

If you know that Russian for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is Союз Советских Социалистических Республик (Soyuz Sovetskih Sotsialisticheskih Respublik) then it's easy.

Unbelievable. Andy pulls a Carpenter through $15K, for the first time in memory, and then the $25K question zaps ALL THREE of his lifelines. A solid game from Andy, but ...

Why does the show REFUSE to give away six digits? Why? Its appeal has really faded, to say the least.

How long is Meredith signed on to host until? My guess is the show is done once she's had enough (unless they get Cat Deeley to take over).

He easily answered the first couple questions about Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, and big band leader Benny Goodman. He then got a little stumped with the $25,000 question, "the world-famous Blarney Stone is located in a castle five miles outside what Irish city?" He used all three lifelines, "Ask the Audience," "Ask the Expert" and "Double Dip," which did help him narrow down the correct answer --Cork --but he wished he still had one option left.

"That was the first week they did away with "Phone a Friend" (when the show was taped in mid-October)," Walcutt said. "I had a friend of mine ready for that lifeline whose family grew up around Cork, so that would have helped."

Walcutt wished he could have saved some of those lifelines for the next question worth $50,000 about the English translation of "Soyuz," the name of the Soviet manned spacecraft first used during the Cold War. He said he had it narrowed down to either "Traveler" or "Union," but incorrectly guessed "Traveler."
