Carl: I have one in mind.

Kiran: All right. What about ones we can eliminate? Washington Irving. I say we can eliminate him.

Carl: That’s what I’m thinking. I don’t know Herman Melville.

Kiran: Herman Melville. I believe he wrote “Moby Dick.”

Carl: I’m thinking Mark Twain.

Kiran: That was my first guess as well.

Carl: I see him at the typewriter. And I’m thinking, you know, when he was in the business, I’m thinking that time frame.

Kiran: I don’t disagree with you. I’m thinking our best bet is “D,” but I’m not positive.

Well, Carl probably didn't have any Google PAFs anyway - there was a lot of press about the Internet turning 40.

My friend Charley Kline at UCLA was the first person to use ARPANET. I had been using the SDS Sigma 7 that became the first node to compile and execute programs written in the SNOBOL language. The idea was that the ARPANET would interconnect the existing networks of the various organizations (thus "Internet") but it took quite some time before there was more than just one computer connected at each site. The ARPANET was developed for, not by the DoD for use by those who had ARPA research grants.

But more importantly...was he also related to you?

PS ARPA (or DARPA, I guess) was an agency of DoD, IIRC.

And wasn't it they who developed ARPANet?

PPS After further research, I will say this.

You're nitpicking.

ARPA (more specifically) IPTO provided the funds.

So it is perfectly acceptable to say they also developed it- without their money, it wouldn't have happened.

Charley is very distantly related through Noah.

ARPA was renamed DARPA in 1972 in reaction to Sen. Mansfield's criticisms of tax money being wasted on research projects.

I just noticed when watching this episode tonight (we're not a two-a-day market and I'm just catching up with my TiVo) that they had removed the PAF icon when they showed Carl's game play status at the start of the show. He had used his PAF on Friday's show. --Bob

Unless you're watching somewhere besides KTLA, we are a two-a-day market now. Original at noon and 1-year-old repeat at 12:30.
