Dead or Alive? Game 28 12/29/07

#1 Post by mrkelley23 » Sat Dec 29, 2007 8:50 am

Today’s game works a little differently. Below are listed several famous catch phrases – famous enough that they should be identifiable with one person. Identify the person first, then whether he/she is dead or alive? Since I’ve already given you the theme, there are no theme bonus points, but there will be one point for the “owner” of the catch phrase, and one point for the current mortality status of said owner, for a total of 24 points available today. Ready?

1. Ayyyyyyyy!
2. Book ‘im, Dan-o.
3. Make it so, Number One.
4. Come on down!!!! (originally)
5. Sorry about that, Chief!
6. What we have here is a failure to communicate.
7. If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.
8. I know nothing!
9. God’ll get you for that, Walter
10. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.
11. The Devil made me do it.
12. Elvis has left the building.

I"m not sure whether you want the actor or character for the fictional phrases, but since it would be unclear whether some of the characters are dead, I'm going with actors.

1. Ayyyyyyyy!

HENRY WINKLER - ALIVE

2. Book ‘im, Dan-o.

JACK LORD - DEAD

3. Make it so, Number One.

CHARLIE CHAN (I'll pick Warner Oland, although I'm sure it doesn't matter because this is wrong. Ha!) - DEAD

4. Come on down!!!! (originally)

JOHNNY OLSON - DEAD

5. Sorry about that, Chief!

DON ADAMS - DEAD

6. What we have here is a failure to communicate.

STROTHER MARTIN - DEAD

7. If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.

JOHNNIE COCHRAN - DEAD

8. I know nothing!

SGT SCHULTZ - DEAD

9. God’ll get you for that, Walter

BEA ARTHUR - ALIVE

The only other Walter I can think of was in the Front Page and I don't recall Rosalind Russell being so succinct. (I remember a deep voice saying it, but that doesn't narrow it down here, does it? Ha!)

10. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.

LLOYD BENTSEN - ALIVE

11. The Devil made me do it.

FLIP WILSON - DEAD

12. Elvis has left the building.

STEVE ALLEN - DEAD

I'm torn between Allen and Ed Sullivan for this one, but I'll at least get one point because whoever it was has to be dead (it's probably some local yokel on the Louisiana Hayride or something like that. Ha!)

Ha!
Spoiler
If Confessor is right about the Louisiana Hayride part, that will be very funny. The only reason I had it on my mind in the first place is because I was thinking about Hank Williams this morning because his daughter was named Lucretia (which is why I wanted to be named Lucretia). Either that or we both just pulled the Hayride out of our bahonkas, which would be nearly as funny as it being right.

I take it you want only the actor, not the character name? But just in case...

1. Ayyyyyyyy! A Perhaps I am missing some nuance of this one by not actually hearing it. Only thing that comes to mind is the Fonz, Henry Winkler.

2. Book ‘im, Dan-o. D Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett. Apparently he was quite the celebrity in Honolulu where he lived until his death.

3. Make it so, Number One. A Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard

4. Come on down!!!! (originally) D Rod Roddy on TPIR although I doubt he is the original.

5. Sorry about that, Chief! D Don Adams as Maxwell Smart

6. What we have here is a failure to communicate. D Strother Martin from Cool Hand Luke. Newman also said it in the movie I believe but I think Martin is more closely associated with it.

7. If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit. D Johnny Cochran from the OJ trial

8. I know nothing! D John Banner (I think) as Sgt Shultz.

9. God’ll get you for that, Walter A Bea Arthur as Maude

10. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy. D Lloyd Benson stating the obvious during a campaign debate

11. The Devil made me do it. D I associate it with Flip Wilson as Geraldine

12. Elvis has left the building. D? No idea. Colonel Parker?

Dead or Alive? Game 28 12/29/07

Ready?

1. Ayyyyyyyy! Henry Winkler Alive
2. Book ‘im, Dan-o. Jack Lord Dead
3. Make it so, Number One. Patrick Stewart Alive
4. Come on down!!!! (originally) Johnny Olsen Dead
5. Sorry about that, Chief! Don Adams Dead
6. What we have here is a failure to communicate. Strother Martin Dead
7. If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit. Johnnie Cochrane Dead
8. I know nothing! John Banner Dead
9. God’ll get you for that, Walter Bea Arthur Alive
10. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy. Lloyd Bentsen Dead
11. The Devil made me do it. Flip Wilson Dead
12. Elvis has left the building. Al Dvorin* Dead

* Horace Lee Logan, who owned the Louisiana Hayride, was the first to publicly put the words together, as a plea to keep his crowd when Elvis finished performing. But as a catch phrase, it was Al Dvorin who made it what it is. I accepted all answers mentioning Dvorin, Logan, or his status with the Hayride. I honestly didn’t expect anyone to get it – 50,000,000 Elvis fans can’t be wrong, y’know.
