I would have answered D, then realized after time ran out that the name was Hayden, not Holden.

As most people only know Salinger for writing "Catcher in the Rye", and with that wicked "Hayden" distractor there, I'd have to say that this question was severely undervalued.

I find this hard to comprehend. In fact, my mental reaction to your comment was somewhat similar to your reaction to "herpetologist" in another stack.

So, we're back to "whatever you know is easy," and whatever you don't know is undervalued -- except that there's always something that somebody doesn't know.

I admit in hindsight that my comment to the herpetologist question might been a bit overblown, but I think that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back for me as far as reading all these transcripts this week and not seeing a single person make it past $25k (as well as venting my frustration of not getting on the show while watching literally everyone who waited with me at auditions get on).

There are quite a few mid-tier questions that I don't know that I would consider fair game if I were playing. For some reason, though, this question struck me as being particularly tricky, and now that I've looked up Franny & Zooey, I remember that book title perfectly, I just never remembered it being a Salinger work.

And a couple more of Salinger's novellas are Raise High the Roof Beam Carpenter and Seymour: an Introduction.

I completely understand your frustration. I have no doubt that we all agree that some hot-seaters do not seem to be particularly well qualified. When I'm worked up, I would go further and say that some hot-seaters show no evidence of ever having read a book that was not a school assignment, nor even so much as a newspaper. At the same time, I have seen contestants that I know to be bright and well-educated who, for whatever reason, have been tripped up by one darn thing or another in the first half of the stack.

That's probably why we keep watching.

WE/WE®... and since he worked in the field of rap music and got picked to be on the show, this warrants a big <grumble>® from me.

Nihil obstat® so far.

So he's a WE/WE®. Cute nickname, though.

Time for a lifeline here. The only Salinger book I can think of is "Catcher in the Rye" and I don't recall anyone from that book having any of these first names.
