On Christmas my younger granddaughter, her husband and their baby went to see husband's family near Fort Collins, Colorado. He spun out on ice and hit a guardrail. Everyone was unhurt but my daughter's Jeep was barely drivable. She has $1000 deductible. So it looks like dear old dad who's been making the loan an insurance payments now has another $1000 bill coming up. Good thing I've been making money at the poker tables.

Also, I've got some sort of respiratory infection that hasn't been responding to antibiotics. I has a nasal CT scan and chest X-ray yesterday to see what might be going on.

At least my father is doing well and playing golf almost every day at age 90 3/4.

Compared to all the other holiday stories, the fact that they're all unhurt is very good news, Bob! Heck, that $1K deductible is just another poker patsy or two.

But take care of whatever's going on with that infection!

As for their car, even though paying the deductible sucks, stuff doesn't matter, people do.

Forgive me if this question's already been asked and answered here, Bob, but how is the strike affecting your other job? My brother-in-law, who works in the film business (mostly industrials and commercials, but he's done a few features, as well) had one of his busiest years ever, but he's very fearful of his prospects for 2008. He thinks there's going to be a trickle-down effect that will have a chilling impact on advertising budgets.

I don't know if any of that has any impact on your writing work or not.

True, but that's the only vehicle that my daughter and both granddaughters have and while it's being fixed they all are going to have a transportation problem. A rental is out of the question as my daughter still can't drive and both of her daughters are under 18 so can't drive a rental.

I'm with the others, I'm glad everyone is OK. Cars can be replaced or repaired. It is an inconvenience while it's being fixed. Maybe granddaughter's husband's family could come up with something (maybe a vehicle for them to drive for a bit) since he was driving? Just a thought.

Why should you bear all the expense? Your daughter is very fortunate to have you to help out.

No, daughter's husband's family can't help. His mother is still in prison and his father when he's not in prison is a drunk.

Glad the people are all unhurt. I hope there is local public transportation, are nearby stores, bicycles, all of that.

Respiratory infections often are viral, in which case antibiotics don't do nuthin'. But you knew that!

Sorry about the car and so glad it was only the car that was hurt. Whew!

Sorry about the car being wrecked. Glad that it took the brunt of the accident so humans did not.

Thank heavens your family in the car didn't need recovery, and may you find out next week that the hunk of metal formerly known as "vehicle" was about to face an urgent recall for some prospective threat that now has been avoided. (Okay, so the last thing isn't particularly likely, but it could happen.)

Know how it feels, my chest xray showed nothing but I'm still coughing.

I'm glad everyone's OK after that accident, but I know a $1K deductible has gotta hurt. Best of luck with your nasty respiratory problems.
