The bad news just keeps rolling in...

So it's time to tell you about Christmas with the Marley family.

On December 4, MarleysDad had a liver biopsy. The doctors apparently weren't happy about something they saw on a sonogram and then on an MRI. Monday afternoon--Christmas Eve afternoon--Dad's doctor called with the results: cancer.

I went with Dad to see a surgeon yesterday. They're going to schedule surgery for January 11; we can expect 5-7 days in the hospital, then examination of the tissue will determine if it has spread and if any follow-up treatment is called for. Meanwhile, Mom is still basically invalid at home, so I'll be juggling looking after both of them. (Mom has a home health aide coming to help during week days.)




Like I said, can we do this holiday over?

It took them three weeks to read the frickin' thing? Sheesh!

Well, this is just one more thing to focus Dad's mind, which is already highly negatively set against doctors and the entire medical system. Dad drove right down to his doctor's office after they called, to pick up a copy of the report. The report was dated December 5--just one day after the test was done. The doctor's secretary covered for him, saying it has just been received. The doctor admitted it was his fault, saying that he, himself, had been sick. No details about that sickness or why any other doctor in the practice couldn't have handled priority medical reports during that 19 day period. (All these reports, of course, must go to the primary care physician, instead of directly to the patient.) Dad's not satisfied with this excuse and is ready to go on the warpath.

January will be...different...

I'm glad your dad is feisty enough to go on the warpath.
Someone needs to. I have no problem calling the doctor's office when I'm waiting for test results. It's bad enough just during "normal" times, but holidays are even worse. There is absolutely no excuse for them waiting that long.

You've got a lot going on right now. Be sure and take care of yourself as well. Adding your family to the already extensive list.

Oh no. I'm sorry for the bad news, but it's a good sign if your dad is on the warpath, sounds like he's a fighter.

As others have said, I too think it's a very good sign that he's angry at the delay in the report. Feistiness seems to be a potent factor in the fight against cancer.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. Many, many prayers are being sent your way. Be sure to take care of yourself.

A lot of doctors have a computerized test results voice mail. You get an id number to enter when you call an 800 number. A message is available with results of your test. That way you can call when you are ready and not have to wait 3 weeks.

Wow, that doctor was iresponsible to wait that long sick or no sickness.

Marley, I am so sorry to read this. Good luck to your Dad and to you. We are going through a similar journey. It helps to have family around.

Oh Marley I'm so sorry.

I am of the "its better to know" school. I hope it works out that knowing helps them come up with a treatment that works, beyond the surgery of course. Never knock surgery for getting rid of big chunks of a Bad Thing.

This just blows. Three weeks to inform someone about a potentially fatal disease? And then the timing on Christmas Eve? Sheesh! No wonder your dad's on the warpath. I hope and pray the delay doesn't hurt your father's prognosis. My prayers are with you and your whole family.
