QOD Wednesday 12-26 "BOXING DAY"

Psych!
I don't really follow boxing that much anymore but, back in the day, I enjoyed watching the fights. It seems like the 70's and 80's were kind of a Golden Age for boxing (the purists are cringing, ha!). Or is it just that the 70's and 80's were kind of a Golden Age all together, everything seemed bigger and brighter and more exciting. Or is it just me and an obvious clue that I'm too effing old?
12/26 Boxing Day
1. This former heavyweight champ obviously has no self-image problems. He names everything on earth after himself, including his five sons (and one of his daughters).
2. This Great White Hope really grabbed the limelight in 1981 when he knocked out Ken Norton in the first round of a nationally televised match. A year later, he was crunched in a championship bout by Larry Holmes.
3. Roberto Duran’s nickname was the “Hands of Stone“. At least until 1980, when a controversial match against Sugar Ray Leonard inspired this new one.
4. Trainer Cus D’Amato took this kid out of a reform school and even became his legal guardian, but died a year before he became the youngest heavyweight champion in the history of the sport.
5. Okay, ladies, you say you don’t like boxing and this category sucks. But you like Paul Newman, don’t you? Isn’t he dreamy? Who played his wife in the movie Somebody Up There Likes Me (the story of Rocky Graziano)?
QOD: My favourite boxer was always Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Because he was cool, he was sexy and he was left handed. I loved a pizza commercial that aired right after he had scored a knockout in a championship fight that was a really big deal (a war, even).
"I wonder what that other guy’s eating tonight?" (shrugs) "Probably soup." (Takes a big old bite of pie.)
I'm paraphrasing (I only saw it once and it was 22 years ago), but how funny is that? Oh, the question… (ha!) Who was the soup eating fellow who was knocked out in the third round?

I know most of these!
1. Big George Foreman
2. Gerry Cooney. I remember the Holmes-Cooney fight like it was yesterday (ok, I didn't watch it live but my family and I followed it closely on the talk radio - "Round 4 is complete and Holmes again is dominant"). I was born in Larry Holmes's hometown, so I have always followed him and rooted for him. I think my family and I were the only Irish Catholics in the world who were rooting for Holmes against Cooney. I've seen recent interviews with the two men and they have become close, which is great considering the tension and animosity that arose during the lead up to this fight.

4. Mike Tyson. I've had the fortune of meeting three heavyweight champions in my life. I met Holmes outside a movie theater in Easton just before the Muhammed Ali fight. I met Ali a few years before that when he visited my school in Berlin, Germany. And I met Mike Tyson a few days before a fight he had in Atlantic City. My friends and I had gone there to gamble and one of them was fortunate enough to win $500 on the slots. To celebrate, he treated us to lunch in the mall that was shaped like a boat that jutted out into the water. Anyway, we went to a cookie store afterwards and, as we waited in line, I looked at the guy in line directly in front of us. It was Mike Tyson. He was arguing with the cashier, saying "I gave you the right amount of money. Why would I try to rip you off?" He wasn't intimidating, just perplexed. My friend interrupts by saying "Mike?!?" Tyson turns around. Pregnant pause. My friend says "Are you Mike Tyson?" Another pregnant pause. Friend: "Uh, can I have your autograph?" Tyson's handler steps in and says, "No, Mike just had lunch and he doesn't sign after a meal." Huh??? They leave and I notice a dad and his kid coming up to Tyson and (presumably) also asking for an autograph. He blows the kid off. I've disliked Tyson since that day. End of story.

A word of explanation:
Back in the day, when my family actually allowed me to play "Trivial Pursuit" with them (I've subsequently been banned, or forced to only play the Sports Edition), we had a running joke that just about every boxing question in the original Genus edition would be answered by either Max Schmelling or Ingomar Johansson. Every time a boxing question came up that someone didn't know (there were a couple about Ali and Jake LaMotta -- the latter of which I knew because I've seen "Raging Bull" about a billion times), the stock answer was always Ingomar Johansson.
