$15,000 (States of the Union)- Which of these U.S. states is home to two counties named, aptly enough, Lewis and Clark?
A- New Mexico B- Idaho
C- Florida D- Maine
At 11 seconds, Nathan chooses to Double Dip (let’s see if New Mexico
was bothering him on this one!)
Nathan’s first choice is A- New Mexico (looks like it was!)
Nathan’s second choice is B- Idaho
B- Idaho (8)
$25,000 (Movie Quotes)- In the film “Gone With the Wind”, Rhett’s famous retort “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” follows what question from Scarlett?
A- What shall I do? B- Whom should I marry?
C- What shall I say? D- Where will I live?
Nathan has an idea, but at 14 seconds, asks the expert, Joel Stein from Time magazine.
Joel really has no idea, but mentions D first, then A
. He asks Nathan what he’s leaning towards, and Nathan says A
. Joel says that sounds good to him but “I really don’t know, so I should stop talking now”. Meredith then says she is going to cut him off now because he made it clear he didn’t know (wow- has she done that before?)
At 13 seconds, Nathan uses his PAF lifeline.
Nathan’s PAF team:
Paul (Brooklyn, NY)
Zach (Brooklyn, NY)
Sara (La Jolla, CA)
Nathan asks for his dad, Paul.
Paul doesn’t seem to know, so Nathan narrows the choices to A or D. However, Paul still doesn’t know, and is about to say something when time runs out.
A- What shall I do? (8)
Commercial Break (after which there is no banter at all- Marley must be so disappointed!)
Nathan is out of lifelines.
$50,000 (Textiles)- The inspiration for an adjective meaning “cheap”, chintz is a type of cloth originally from what part of the world?
A- India B- Morocco
C- Egypt D- Turkey
At 12 seconds, after commenting that he’d been to Turkey and seen lots of textiles there, and saying “I bet my dad would know this one”, Nathan guesses D- Turkey
and leaves with $25,000 and no shot at that last ToT spot.
A- India

Joel made a comment like "I should have stopped talking five minutes ago." He may have rambled on for a much longer time that got edited out of the tape. In general, Meredith doesn't seem to cut off an expert as long as they're still actively trying to work out an answer. If they say "I don't know" and leave it at that, Meredith will terminate the call quickly, often without much opportunity for a contestant to try to extend the discussion. (Contestants need to keep this in mind and be aggressive in extending the dialog, in this situation!)
With Fred letting slip the spoiler about being eliminated from the ToT, I really expected that Nathan would be the contestant to bump him. I was surprised when he burned through his lifelines like he did, here.

A- New Mexico B- Idaho

Kentucky also has Lewis and Clark counties. Obviously, I have been in both.
I was not thrown off by New Mexico because that, I don't believe, was part of the Louisiana Purchase.

I saw this movie one time and have no idea what the answer is. I'll try the audience first. PAF if they don't know it.
BBTranscriptTeam wrote:$50,000 (Textiles)- The inspiration for an adjective meaning “cheap”, chintz is a type of cloth originally from what part of the world?
A- India B- Morocco
C- Egypt D- Turkey
If I still have the PAF, I'll use it here. If not, then I would Double Dip on Turkey first and India second.

Because he didn't know the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition, I presume.

Here's an article about Nathan's appearance.
http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=530023
Kaplan said he especially enjoyed talking with the host, Meredith Viera. “I did a little Google and Wikipedia stalking,” said Kaplan. “She definitely looks good for an older woman.”
And she's a cougar!
“I would recommend anyone to audition,” said Kaplan, who added that he was open to competing in other game shows.
“It’s a great experience, and it isn’t a hard process,” said Kaplan.
Uh huh.
Earlier this year, Kaplan found out about a “Millionaire” audition nearby, and decided to try his luck. Four weeks later, he found himself in the studio, and six weeks after that, his episode aired.
<sigh>

I could not figure out why Nathan thought NM would be the right answer. Given the publicity surrounding the Lewis & Clark bicentennial I thought this was a fairly simple and straightforward question for this level.

No idea, so it's time for a lifeline. I doubt the expert will know this, nor the audience, and I don't know enough to make two choices, so it's PAF while it's still a lifeline.

Uhhh, no. She's married and her husband is older than she is. That would make her the inverse of a cougar...
