Meridith isn't surprised that Sarah is doing so well, because the show has been an important thing for her family. Sarah's mom was a television anchor for WBAY in Green Bay, and this show came on--originally with Regis--right after her shift at the station, so they'd always watch her mom's newscast and then watch the show. Her mom would usually come home half way through the show and start yelling answers with Sarah and her dad. They were really into it!

$7,500

Talking trivia is a big no-no in the green room. They made us stop singing Sound of Music songs and that was us just being silly. I'm sure Nathan Hale did not come up in regular conversation.

Huh? I don't recall anyone reporting that they censored green room conversations, before.

Maybe one of the APs just didn't like the Sound of Music? :P

You're kidding!

That's ridiculous if true.

There apparently wasn't any restriction like that when MsCheesecake taped anyway. I remember a contestant getting a question about Shakira's home country and the contestant mentioned that was one of the things discussed in the Green Room.

Be glad I left early, PKS. You would not have wanted to hear my alleged singing voice.

Funny, I always thought the quote was "one life to give", not "one life to lose". Same meaning of course, but that's the wording I remembered.

Funny, I always thought the quote was "one life to give", not "one life to lose". Same meaning of course, but that's the wording I remembered.

This is where they may have gotten the quote (from wiki):

From the memoirs of Captain William Hull, quoting British Captain John Montresor, who was present and who spoke to Hull under a flag of truce the next day: “’On the morning of his execution,’ continued the officer, ‘my station was near the fatal spot, and I requested the Provost Marshal [the infamous William Cunningham] to permit the prisoner to sit in my marquee, while he was making the necessary preparations. Captain Hale entered: he was calm, and bore himself with gentle dignity, in the consciousness of rectitude and high intentions. He asked for writing materials, which I furnished him: he wrote two letters, one to his mother and one to a brother officer.’ He was shortly after summoned to the gallows. But a few persons were around him, yet his characteristic dying words were remembered. He said, ‘I only regret, that I have but one life to lose for my country.’”
Coincidentally, Hull is better known as the brigadier general who later surrendered the entire U.S. northwestern army to the British during the War of 1812.

I've been having those exact thoughts about the quote. Wikipedia has an interesting discussion about what he may have said or not said in the section headed "The Speech" here -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Hale

It occurs to me, however, that "one life to give" is a somewhat more positive concept than "one life to lose." Thus, I wonder if the traditional quote may have been revised since the 1970s by supporters of anti-war movements.

My experience was when we were our small group, the 5 of us who came in together - the conversations were all personal stories about ourselves and familes - during the lull between official meetings with various BAM folks. It was only after coming back up from the studio and we merged with the 11 holdovers that trivia questions started flowing along with general knowledge info (such as naming all the Supreme Court Justices). That went on for sometime until some folks said that they had enough - no more trivia - so we looked for other avenues of amusement. All the time, old broadcasts of WWTBAM were playing on the screen and that did not stop.

Phil, did something similar happen with your group? Was there a self-imposed ban on trivia - or did the BAM staff put the kibosh on it?

---Jay

Here's a promo for Sarah's carryover appearance.

http://www.wbay.com/Global/story.asp?S=11435651
She almost missed the show. Sarah woke up late on the day of the taping but arrived just in time to be on the show.
Huh? Her carryover wasn't really from one taping day to the next, so this must mean she hadn't gone through all the early morning practice and briefings. Would TPTB allow her to tape without that? This report must be an exaggeration, right?

To which Meredith replied, "Go on and give her the money." Seems a little overboard in the praise department, doesn't it?

I think this contestant may suffer from brown-nose syndrome

It came down from the higher ups. Earlier in the day some people were asking some trivia related questions and I was showing off my TV theme songs knowledge and the PAs Kevin and Amanda didn't say anything. One of them had mentioned that if a question came up during the taping to not mention we had talked about it in the green room. It may have been related to this incident. Later in day, we got silly and for some reason we were singing Julie Andrews pretty loudly (and poorly) when someone came in and told us we couldn't sing because it can be construed as talking trivia. I asked that talking about just about anything was trivia and what did they want us to do. So we ended up talking about ourselves.

We also had videos but they never came on and the PAs didn't seem to want to put them on.
