C: Bats D: Bison
With 33 seconds left, Claire decides to Ask The Expert.
Deborah: This is a really trick one and I'm not a zoologist, Claire. Turtles, beavers, bats and bison. I haven't heard of problems with any of them! Claire, I can't help you. You're going to have to you with your own instincts on this one. My instincts tell that there has been a problem with buffalo, but I'm not sure about that. I also seem to recall something about turtles, but I am completely guessing here. I really--it's not on our beat here, I can't help you and I don't even think I've seen it anywhere, lately on the media.
Meredith: All right--
Claire: My hope was that you had seen a story, somewhere in passing. But apparently--
Deborah: I read everything! I don't think it's been lately, but--obviously it's a problem and we want their noses to be pink or brown or any color but white, obviously.
With 31 seconds left, Claire decides to Double Dip.
Claire's first answer is Beavers
.
Claire's second answer is D: Bison
.
C: Bats ( 25 )
Claire leaves with $25,000.

$25K-easy.
$50K-I knew this because I actually heard about it on public radio the other day. I was flipping stations and I came across Michigan Public Radio. They were talking about how scientists are worried about bats and "white nose syndrome". It's in the Northeast now, and may be spreading here-we have 3 species of bat that are known to develop this disease. What a concidence to have it come up as a BAM question so soon after I learned this!

Never mind- I misread the damn question!
Wow! That's scary! The right answer due to a misread!
PS Although now that I looked it up really quickly, I had read something about this.

I wonder how Meredith would score this one for Deborah? She doesn't know, but her lengthy response points towards two possible answers. Claire takes one and ignores one with her Double Dip and the answer is the only choice left over. Ouch!

I didn't recall reading any stories about White Nose Syndrome, but apparently it started here in Upstate NY.
Wikipedia has a good article about it.

Norville is one of those experts who could be brilliant - she bridges the gap between news and pop culture.

The expert gave her two wrong answers and she unfortunately chose the third wrong answer. I've read some about this - the "white-nose" is caused by a fungus (IIRC). It causes the bats to alter their metabolic cycle, flying (erratically) in the daytime.

It may do that, but it also alters their hibernation cycle, causing them to wake up too soon, when there's no food for them to eat.

Hibernation cycle - that's what it was. I knew it had something to do with their sleeping.

There's new evidence about white nose syndrome that the fungus came from Europe.
