I was a bit annoyed by her approach to that question. I'm positive she new it before the choices came up but was playing it up for TV. The way she did it probably would not instill the contestant with too much confidence and came across slightly condescending, IMHO.

I beg to differ - I think she was just being thorough. My guess is she is not a 'game show maven' and approached this as a multiple choice question. Also, I doubt that she knew/realized that at the dollar value for the question that it would always be the obvious answer and that it wouldn't be a trick question. I think she knew it cold but didn't want to screw up, so she methodically eleminated all the wrong answers first (noticed in her analysis she skipped the correct response even though it was first on the list). Nor do I think she thought much about time management for the question - since there is no clock for the expert.

My guess is she saw the question and knew the answer right out of the gate but didn't want to make a mistake so she went through each and every distractor to make sure that each one could not possibly be correct. I think it was a bit jarring because we haven't seen that style before - but I don't think it was playing for the camera or trying to pretend she's not a 'know-it-all'. That's why when she was done, I don't think she realized that she didn't sell her answer, but from the HS perspective it seemed it was done just by the process of elimination. That's why she seemed somewhat surprised when William asked if she was sure.

Basically, unless the expert is a former game show contestant, I doubt that they think about the game play for even a very tiny fraction as we folks do.

True. Aside from BBs, I doubt if there are even a handful of PAFs who served more than once. But at least the PAF selection was under the contestant's control. If you choose a PAF who's not taking the job seriously, it's your own fault. If TPTB choose an expert who's only there to plug their own TV show/album/book, you're screwed.
