Tom’s never been to Coney Island. His first inclination is that it’s a roller coaster, but “that might be too obvious”. Shane remarks it’s probably not a waterslide, and that’s pretty much the gist of the discussion.

At 14 seconds, Shane decides to phone a friend.

Shane’s PAF team:

Nicole- Little Rock, AR
Steve Perry (Weyoun)- Pittsburgh, PA
Chad Mosher (Chad1m)- Flint, MI

Shane calls upon our own Weyoun (Steve Perry).

Steve eliminates Ferris Wheel, saying that came “much later” (you be the judge if 1893 is “much later” than 1884. You also be the judge and decide if Ferris’ wheel was the first Ferris wheel. But I digress…) He says he’s “not getting anything, but thinks it’s carousel” as time runs out.

Does the "Loan Ranger" give out silver bullets and then ask for them back with interest? :)

During Dave's annual Christmas Shows, I much prefer watching Darlene Love singing Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) and Dave and Jay throwing footballs at the giant meatball atop the Late Show Christmas tree, but Dave really likes this story:

The David Letterman one is either a "you know it or you don't" question. Without a PAF or ATE lifeline, it's impossible to reason out.

Tough breaks on the $7,500- I wanted to be biting and sarcastic about it, but could only emphathize while watching it.

My other two comments on Friday's show- 1) There was a noticeable lack of banter and 2) I wonder if yet another contestant almost flaming out because she thought she had the ATE when she didn't was also a catalyst for the demise of the PAF.

I.E., the new lifeline sucks, so let's get rid of the old one that works?

The topic tree has been showing "Abraham Lincoln" as a category for the $1MM question. Also "The White House". Was just speculating if they're the same question with different names.

My nightmare scenario: An early question in a knowledge gap.

If this is the Jeopardy! champ Shane, it just goes to show that this unfortunate turn of events can happen to anyone.

My guess would be that they would ask for the name of either Garfield's or McKinley's assassin (with the other answer being one of the spoilers).

Once again a contestant rushes to answer questions and winds up not needing the time he "saved." I think every contestant who has tried this has bombed out. It could be that they are concentrating on doing things quickly and lose track of the big picture.

How did this guy do on Jeopardy?

I am surprised that the contestant and Weyoun did not notice that only one of the $7500 involves a ride on a set of tracks, like a railway.

Maybe you need to really like roller coasters to automatically know that Coney Island had the first coaster. (My son is a coaster fanatic.)

He was the 1996 College Champion, winning $32,800 and a Volvo. He won $5,000 in that year's Tournament of Champions. He lost in round three of 2005's Ultimate Tournament of Champions, netting $55,400 in the process.

I can imagine that there is a great deal to process in very little time. Olus, you do not have the benefit of actually seeing the question.

As I noted, much more of a wheelhouse thing for me.

My favorite Broadway musical is Assassins... Listen to the Ballad of Czolsizsdfndf and you'll know everything the show could ever ask about McKinley. Likewise for most of the others, although the Ballad of Booth is fairly light on info (other than Sic Semper Tyrannus, but I'd expect that for $25,000 at highest).

Well I've done it three times before, all successfully. But I agree, I am a visual person. On Jeopardy, the toughest questions for me are the Clue Crew ones where there's no text.

The clock would run out before they finished trying to pronounce the name of McKinley's assassin.

The clock ran out while I was trying to figure out where all the vowels went.

7.5K: I didn't "automatically know" this one, but don't see how it could be anything else but coaster, since it involves rails & all.

25K: I have occasionally watched the Darlene Love singing portion. Otherwise, don't know.
ATA. If they're not very very sure, PAF.

Another rough patch. "Switchback" suggests something that goes back and forth, which only a roller coaster does of the four choices.

Not to worry, others have gone far without lifelines.

I would have had no idea (I don't stay up late enough to watch Letterman) and I'm not sure how easy a Google this would be. But I'd start with ATA because I'd still have that one. This might be one time when ATA would produce the right answer on a (relatively) high dollar question.

I knew that because it was a question presented to me a few years ago during one of my stints as the PACS lifeline at DCA. (I usually did that immediately after a turn in the Hot Seat.) I didn't know it then. --Bob
