$10K An iPhone application from Runpee.com advises users on the best time to go to the restroom while doing what?
A. Reading a book
B. Watching a movie
C. Taking a road trip
D. Playing a video game
ATE (13)
Tom says he doesn’t have an iPhone, so this is going to be difficult.
He would guess “B. Watching a movie.”
Ray: Why do you feel that way Tom?
Tom: Mainly because there are no commercials in a movie and maybe the iPhone would give you a signal where you could stop the movie and go to the restroom.
Ray makes “C. Taking a road trip” his final answer.
Ray leaves with $5K.
B. Watching a movie (13)
Answers:
$10K B. Watching a movie

I don't have an iPhone either, so that's one thing he and I have in common.

Why the hell would Ray pick C out of nowhere? OK, I know Tom DeLay doesn't have an iPhone and just guessed... but, right or wrong, at least he put some logic into his guess. Ray had no logic for his own.
I had it down to B and D, but I would've asked the audience because I've never heard of Runpee.

I heard about this app sometime on the radio a while back, and was somewhat surprised (initially at least) at Ray's pick, but I don't think one can make any assumptions on Ray choosing it using 'no logic for his own'. He may have thought he heard of a similar app, or he may have taken some road trips where finding a clean restroom and knowing when one was coming up - especially if it uses some of the gps/location technology to indicate when the next rest stop will be and how long it would be to the following one. He might have focused in on the 'run' part of 'runpee' and assumed it meant traveling and the other choices are all stationary. The fact that he didn't go through his thinking with Mr. DeLay doesn't mean that he just randomly picked or made a wild guess.
A quick google of 'Iphone find a restroom' lists a number of different apps including 'Have2P' - that detects your current location and finds restroom - maybe he heard about these type of apps, he did say he had an IPhone and since Mr. DeLay said it was a pure guess and he didn't have an IPhone - he decided to just disregard his comments.
This is all conjecture, of course, but I didn't get the sense that he used no logic of his own.

So close and yet so far. Yes, "there's an app for that," but there's no reason to assume that anybody would be familiar with Runpee, particularly for only $10K. If only it had occurred to Tom to think about watching movies in a theater instead of at home (where he seemed to think that the iPhone would double as a remote control), he might have been able to back up his guess.
I think there should be a new question that every expert ought to answer during the initial chat with Meredith. "How many times have you watched this show?" If you're unfamiliar with the format, you're not going to be as effective as you might be.

Too bad he didn't use his ATE on Friday when he could have had Ken Jennings.

DeLay had the right idea for the wrong reason. I guess he was assuming someone would be watching a movie at home rather than in a theater. I have to wonder why Ray rejected the expert's advice, also. And another contestant goes home with $5K - that's four in a row, IIRC.
FWIW I do have an iPhone but not any of the numerous apps that are designed to tell you when to go to the bathroom during a movie.

I don't need a phone to keep track of my bladder, TYVM.

What does runpee do? Telll you when the most boring part of the movie you're watching comes up?
Jesus Christ- make memory practically limitless, and there's no telling the stupid programs programmers will write.
I hope to GOD this is a free app.

I presume so. You can decide for yourself when you
need to go.

Yes, Runpee (and the others like it) let a person know when it is safe to go to the bathroom and not miss any of the action or best scenes. There also are websites devoted to this topic.
As I recall, Jordan Palmer (Carson's little brother) has such a website as a side business to being a clipboard carrier.

Runpee and others should thank their lucky stars that movie theaters decided a small soda is 32 ounces and a large soda is 64 ounces!!!

I've heard of this one, but just applying a bit of logic would lead you to the right answer. Since you can put a book down or pause a video game, there's no "best time" to go to the bathroom. Going on a car trip makes more sense, but it would be more a matter of finding the right place rather than the right time. Only watching a movie in a theater makes sense as an answer, especially given the name of the app: "Runpee."
Having said that, the clock may play a part in someone's being unable to think all that through in 30 seconds.

Yeah- but he asked the expert. That gave him time to think.

And he writes: "I passed the time by meeting other contestants.
Some, like me, auditioned on a whim. Marley, I'm taking a <grumble®>.
I'm also interested in his comment: "Two others had made it no further than the fastest fingers rounds in previous seasons." "Previous seasons"? I guess that mean they were in the ROF ten years ago -either that or the reporter didn't get the facts straight.

Definitely a <grumble>® on the whim, ear!
I'm guessing the ROFers were from this summer's prime time episodes and not from several years ago. Lots of those who were cast from the in-person and video auditions were getting invited back.

This is sad. The other choices are under your control. The movie, if shown in a theater, is not. So its the choice for "when will I miss the least stuff".

Looks like some of the worst have been removed by the site staff, now.
Then there's this one.

I feel horrible about that. But RunPee has been all over the news this Summer. Tell Ray to contact me and I'll send him a RunPee T-Shirt. It's the least I can do.
All over the news? Maybe if you wrote the app and are scouring the internet for every little mention of it.

I was in the ROF in Feb 2000 and Stephanie Osorio was in the ROF during the 10th Anniversay shows.

I would assume you re-qualified and were not selected from your 2000 ROF. I guess the statement in the article is factually correct but it seems a bit unclear.
