OK. You knew it was bound to happen, what with all the holiday stuff going on, that I’d have to go with a Christmas/Holiday Lyrically Speaking. Today I’m going to change it up a bit, I’m going to give you the lyrics AND the year that the song came out and/or charted, plus I’m going to give you the highest chart position or if it didn’t chart then I’ll let you know that too, you just need to tell me the song title and who recorded it. Oh, and one last thing, you’ve got 15 songs to ponder over today.

LS #16…………………………….Christmas

Good Luck & Have Fun!

1. 1996 - #80
You don't need Deck The Halls
Or Jingle Bell Rock
Cause you can spin a dreidel
With Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock

2. 1984 - #13
And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of doom
Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you

3. 1963 - Did Not Chart
They're singin' 'Deck the Halls'
But it's not like Christmas at all
I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

4. 1958-(59-60-61-62) - #1
Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

5. 1978 - DNC
Don't give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don't give my sister a cuddly toy
We don't want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real McCoy

6. 1981 - DNC
A&P has provided me
With the world's smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?

7. 1982 - DNC
On the first day of Christmas
My true love gave to me, a beer
On the second day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
Two turtlenecks and a beer

8. 1971 - DNC
And so happy Christmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

9. 1982 - DNC
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby, do you recognize me?
Well it's been a year it doesn't surprise me
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I love you" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again

10. 1978 - #18
Friends and relations
Send salutations
Sure as the stars shine above
But this is Christmas
Yeah, it's Christmas, my dear
It's the time of year to be
With the one you love

11. 1975 - #95
They said there'd be snow at Christmas
They said there’d be peace on Earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the Virgin birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter’s light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire

12. 1973 - DNC
Take care in all you do next year
And keep smiling through the days
If we can help to entertain you
Oh we will find the ways

13. 1960 (1961-62) - #14
You will get a sentimental
Feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly

14. 1957(1958-60-61-62) - #6
What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one horse sleigh

15. 1991 - DNC
And all over town little kids gonna get down
And Christmas is a rockin' time, put your body next to mine
Underneath the mistletoe we go, we go

**************************

PS: There will be no Lyrically Speaking tomorrow, Christmas Day.

LS #16…………………………….Christmas

Good Luck & Have Fun!

1. 1996 - #80
You don't need Deck The Halls
Or Jingle Bell Rock
Cause you can spin a dreidel
With Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock

The Hannukah Song - Adam Sandler (This has got to be the only Hannukah-themed song to cross over and become a "holiday song", played along with all the other Christmas and winter crap this time of the year...)

2. 1984 - #13
And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of doom
Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you

Sounds more like my idea of Christmas. It fits in fine with the theme of most other early 80's songs, but I have no idea....

3. 1963 - Did Not Chart
They're singin' 'Deck the Halls'
But it's not like Christmas at all
I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year

4. 1958-(59-60-61-62) - #1
Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.

The ^*(&^#@*( Chipmunks Christmas song! Another annoying staple of the Wal~Mart radio....

5. 1978 - DNC
Don't give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don't give my sister a cuddly toy
We don't want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real McCoy

6. 1981 - DNC
A&P has provided me
With the world's smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?

7. 1982 - DNC
On the first day of Christmas
My true love gave to me, a beer
On the second day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
Two turtlenecks and a beer

The McKenzie Brothers' 12 Days of Christmas (Not that they actually do 12 days, but it's listenable at least....)

8. 1971 - DNC
And so happy Christmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

That John Lennon song, So This Is Christmas I think it's called....

9. 1982 - DNC
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby, do you recognize me?
Well it's been a year it doesn't surprise me
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I love you" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again

10. 1978 - #18
Friends and relations
Send salutations
Sure as the stars shine above
But this is Christmas
Yeah, it's Christmas, my dear
It's the time of year to be
With the one you love

11. 1975 - #95
They said there'd be snow at Christmas
They said there’d be peace on Earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the Virgin birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter’s light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire

12. 1973 - DNC
Take care in all you do next year
And keep smiling through the days
If we can help to entertain you

13. 1960 (1961-62) - #14
You will get a sentimental
Feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee (Way, way overplayed....)

14. 1957(1958-60-61-62) - #6
What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one horse sleigh

Jingle Bell Rock - Who know, who cares? (The 80,000 versions of this all kind of blend together after the millionth time you've heard it)

15. 1991 - DNC
And all over town little kids gonna get down
And Christmas is a rockin' time, put your body next to mine
Underneath the mistletoe we go, we go

At least (I think) you didn't include some of the Christmas songs that make my ears bleed like Feliz Navidad and that horrendously overplayed Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time, or whatever that garbage is called..... but where's my favorite ass Dominick?

Good Luck & Have Fun!

1. 1996 - #80
You don't need Deck The Halls
Or Jingle Bell Rock
Cause you can spin a dreidel
With Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock
The Chanukah Song – Adam Sandler

Got to get a Chanukah song in there somewhere.

2. 1984 - #13
And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of doom
Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you
Do They Know It's Christmas? – Band Aid

Now there’s some upbeat Christmas lyrics for ya! Still love the song, especially like the b-side where all the artists announce themselves and wish everyone a Happy Christmas, it’s like a who’s who of British has-beens.

3. 1963 - Did Not Chart
They're singin' 'Deck the Halls'
But it's not like Christmas at all
I remember when you were here
And all the fun we had last year
Christmas, Baby Please Come Home – Darlene Love

One of my all-time favorite Christmas songs, I like the U2 version too (I think Darlene Love sings background on their version).

4. 1958-(59-60-61-62) - #1
Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good, but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late.
The Chipmunk Song – David Seville & The Chipmunks

Man this song just kept going, now it’s one of those songs that you can stand to hear oh, maybe once a season.

5. 1978 - DNC
Don't give my brother a Steve Austin outfit
Don't give my sister a cuddly toy
We don't want a jigsaw or monopoly money
We only want the real McCoy
Father Christmas – The Kinks

Never understood what Ray Davies was saying, and was surprised to find out that he mentioned Steve Austin, who knew that the WWE was popular back then. That Stone Cold must be much older than he looks. Another favorite of mine for Christmas.

6. 1981 - DNC
A&P has provided me
With the world's smallest turkey
Already in the oven, nice and hot
Oh damn! Guess what I forgot?
Christmas Wrapping – The Waitresses

I was surprised that this didn’t chart, it’s one of my top 5 favorites for the season. Do not listen to any other version of this song, the rest all stink!

7. 1982 - DNC
On the first day of Christmas
My true love gave to me, a beer
On the second day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
Two turtlenecks and a beer
The Twelve Days of Christmas – Bob & Doug McKenzie

Just a dumb fun holiday tune.

8. 1971 - DNC
And so happy Christmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) – John Lennon & Yoko Ono

Another top 5 of my favorites for Christmas, most of the other versions pale in comparision.

Last Christmas – Wham

Not much of a fan of this one, I do like the Jimmy Eat World version.

10. 1978 - #18
Friends and relations
Send salutations
Sure as the stars shine above
But this is Christmas
Yeah, it's Christmas, my dear
It's the time of year to be
With the one you love
Please Come Home for Christmas – The Eagles

I actually like this version more than the original Charles Brown version, there’s something about Don Henley’s voice on it. Other than that it’s been cover by many artists over the years.

11. 1975 - #95
They said there'd be snow at Christmas
They said there’d be peace on Earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the Virgin birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter’s light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire
I Believe in Father Christmas – Greg Lake

This is a great sounding song, but the lyrics are not what I’d call umm, upbeat.

12. 1973 - DNC
Take care in all you do next year
And keep smiling through the days
If we can help to entertain you
Oh we will find the ways
Step Into Christmas – Elton John

Surprised that this song didn’t chart, since 1973 was Elton’s heyday. Very good song, although I’ve yet to find a good sounding recording of it, that might be because it was originally going to be sent out to Fan Club members only.

13. 1960 (1961-62) - #14
You will get a sentimental
Feeling when you hear
Voices singing, let's be jolly
Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee

Another of those late 50’s early 60’s Christmas songs that charted over and over again. It’s a staple, and not too annoying.

14. 1957(1958-60-61-62) - #6
What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one horse sleigh
Jingle bell Rock – Bobby Helms

See above. Boy they really liked ‘Rockin’ back in the day.

15. 1991 - DNC
And all over town little kids gonna get down
And Christmas is a rockin' time, put your body next to mine
Underneath the mistletoe we go, we go
Christmas All Over Again - Tom Petty

I think this is from one of those Very Special Christmas albums, where you get 1good song for every 2 bad ones.
