Dead or Alive? Game 23 12/23/07

Identify the following people as Dead or Alive. Then take a guess at the theme. There are three levels of “correctness” for today’s theme. If you get to level 3, you will get 15 bonus points. Level 2 is worth 10 points, and level 1 is worth 5. I can’t say much more than this without giving too much away: If you know level three, then levels 1 and 2 will be obvious. The first five to reach each level will receive bonus points, although you cannot get bonus points for more than one level.

Bleah, I just had time to post the QOD before I left this morning and, since this one was pretty easy, I thought I'd answer real quick.

I was in the car driving when I thought I probably should have told you that my QOD for today was originally titled Children of a Lesser God. Oh, crap! Marlee Matlin was Best Actress, wasn't she? Crap. So what could it possibly be? Only nomination? No, Mercedes McCambridge was in Giant, too.

Debut role? No way, Terms of Endearment couldn't have been Hutton's first, or On the Waterfront for Eva Marie Saint. Well, I looked it up once I got home (before I even did my fantasy lineup!) and damn, I had no idea that Hutton (and all the 50's ladies) did so much tv and NO movies before these. Ha!

Good question! (even if I muffed it)

All of the ones I recognize are Academy Award winning actors. In fact I think all the ones I know are winners for Best Supporting Actor/Actress so I will add that as a "level". I have no idea which level it is.

This one came out of watching Dreamgirls the other night. As I often do with movies that are worth watching, but not gripping my attention every second, I was on imdb.com as I was watching, looking for trivia about the movie. That’s where I ran across this trivium about Jennifer Hudson winning the Oscar for her screen debut, and that there were 14 others who had done the same thing.

Because I was unintentionally ambiguous with my directions, I decided to award bonus points thusly: Everyone got bonus points for their last correct level. So the people who said Best Supporting Oscar winners would get level 1 points, since they obviously knew these people were actors, but not level 2 points, since they were too specific about which Oscar. May not be fair, but there you go.

Nope -- just level 1, since at least two of these (Booth and Matlin) did not win for supporting roles

Not really bothered one way or another by how points are determined even though I have done pretty well this month, probably mostly because I have played every day and gotten a few early response bonuses I suppose.

Although my reading of "bonus points for their last correct level" was that you kept getting levels until you said something wrong. So Best Supporting Oscar Winners get zonked before they get to Oscar winners, whereas Oscar Winners for a supporting role get to Level 2 before they get it wrong.

Except I just looked at your answer and you got to Oscar before Supporting like I did. So my argument would work for you as well. Never mind. Ha!

Yeah, I'm sticking to the way I posted it, even though it may look wrong on the face of it.

Here's how I originally envisioned the scoring: you could take a guess on a broad general category (actors) or at a more specific range within that broad category (Oscar winners) or at the highest level of specificity (winning in their movie debut). It was SUPPOSED to be clear that you could only make one guess, so you could either play it real safe or go for the gusto, but you could only guess at one level or the other, not all three at once.

After posting the answers and looking at people's responses, it was clear that almost no one got that from my instructions (understandable once I read them) so I went with a different method, which essentially penalized people a level for saying something wrong. I couldn't see giving the same score to people who said "supporting actor Oscars" and those who said "Oscar winners," especially in the unlikely event that someone actually understood my instructions, and was playing for the 10 point bonus only. So saying "actors" got you five bonus points, but saying "TV actors" would have gotten you zero. Oscar winners got you ten, but supporting Oscar winners got you only 5.
