Pizzicato is when you pluck the strings with your fingers instead of using the bow.

Of course, the Grizzlies were originally the Vancouver Grizzlies and moved to Memphis, so the name was more appropos of their original city, much the same as the Los Angeles (Minneapolis) Lakers and the Utah (New Orleans) Jazz.

I wonder how many experts think that? After all, they've never seen these contestants before and they'll never see them again.

I thought he was convinced (and not just guessing) there were 2 Johns on the Supreme Court, he just couldn't name them in the time allowed. Samuel and Clarence were obviously wrong answers. He named Stephen Breyer (like the ice cream). Granted, it would have been better if he named John Roberts and John Paul Stevens, but I think Mo did OK.

The problem is that Kate couldn't know if he knew that for a fact or not. He started well by naming the justices and he could have continued with "John Roberts and that other John whose last name I can't remember." Instead, he turned it into a joke. How could Kate be sure that he'd never, never take that approach if he was doubtful of his answer?

A direct, shtick-free approach is always safer, even if it scores fewer points for Mo's celebrity persona.

Either an older student or else she started having children very young.

My grandson Caden likes to watch this show. He's only 2 so I doubt he "gets" it, but it's visually attractive enough to keep his attention.

Hmmm...what happened to Cokie Roberts? I must confess she did a passable job during her stint.

That was an odd way to answer the question. FTR it's John Stevens and John Roberts.

First it was an interesting question because there are two phonetic ste(v|ph)ens on the court, a first name and a last name. I think Mo new it and sold it as he was sure - and I'm sure he could have named them both, maybe he didn't think he had to and I think Kate new that he was sure. I don't think it was a guess on his part.

Also, how many experts have donned PJ's and an Ascot (on different appearences)? Mo is up there as one of my favorite experts.

Kind of interesting (to those of us who are interested in such things) that she had two Italian language questions in which she had to use lifelines, once successfully (albeit, I think, wastefully) and once not.

For the 'my lady' question, the only Italian word in the choices was 'Madonna,' which should have made it kind of easy (and the 'ma' prefix should have suggested 'my' anyway), so that was a waste.

The pizzicato question is a little trickier: it would have helped her to know Italian ('pizzicato' comes from a word that means, literally, 'to pluck' or 'to pick,' and a stringed instrument is the only one that makes sense), but knowledge of real music (where real musicians actually play real instruments, not the cacaphony of noise that passes for music these days) would also give you the answer. Back in the good old days, when people actually learned things in school, we learned all of those musical terms, even for the instruments we did not play-- you needed them in order to read music, or to know what the composer intended.

Too bad, so sad.
Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

Her schedule probably didn't give her the leisure to sit at home all afternoon, waiting for Skype calls at unpredictable times.*

It's not like these celebrity experts are actually friends of the contestants. :|

*And I wonder if the experts worry that "If I go the bathroom at the wrong moment in the next several hours, the contestant may miss out on my help!" :|

The "Madonna question seemed easy, but "pizzicato" had me stumped and I did go to school "back in the good old days" (but I never had much music instruction.) OTOH, my 12 year old son has a great band teacher right now and knew that "pizzicato" meant to pluck!

Kate's appearance is mentioned it this column, where her name is listed as Kate Crowley. Did I get it wrong in the transcript last week?

http://blog.masslive.com/criesandwhispe ... short.html

Kate's $5,000 win got first billing over news of Senator Kerry's impending hip replacement surgery and news about the Craz-E Burger (a cheeseburger served on a donut bun)!

Does it say if she is related to Aleister?
