Ha... you just made me notice the irony of the picture that I posted. I wasn't even thinking along the lines of his last question! That's funny.

Well, Ryan Seacrest is definitely an idiot box.

A: Ocean B: Lake
C: River D: Pond
An answer did not come to me within 15 seconds, so I would've burned the ATA. I did realize after 15 seconds that ocean would be the most likely answer because it's salt water.
$7.5K: Well, now I'm really regretting burning the audience on the last question. I can eliminate Kate Winslet (still married to director Sam Mendes, I assume) and Kate Beckinsale (married to some other director). DD on the other two choices.

Chuck missed an opportunity to use his "fifth lifeline" here. I listened to the tape twice. The gasps came while Chuck said the full B answer,
before the "final answer".

Anyone else reminded of the 'low talker' Seinfeld episode. I could barely hear Chuck and I think Meredith had trouble hearing him as well.

D: Brown (3)
That was a close one and another example of why TDC® is a bad idea.

Uh, oh, if he's using lifelines this early there's trouble ahead. And, it turns out, he did know the answer. Once again TDC® claims another lifeline.

He didn't seem to be all that calm under the pressure of the HS.

Time for me to use a lifeline. ATA because they're sure to know the answer.

I can't help but wonder if TDC was a factor here also. Given time he might have made the connection between "ACES" and gambling, which would have led to the right answer.

Yeah, more time to think about it would have helped him. I'm sure someone from Philly has heard of the casinos in Atlantic City.
But maybe it's the question writers' fault for using the word "aptly" instead of "fittingly".

I wonder if Chuck hadn't corrected his "error" in time whether the show would have llama'ed him or not.

That could have been a nasty scene in the studio. For years, Meredith has made a simple "final" be sufficient. Would the obvious slip of the tongue adding "color" instead of "answer" to that suddenly make it insufficient?

Given how close this comes to the infamous "UK cougher" scenario, I can't help but wonder what TPTB would actually do if Chuck had managed to react and change his answer.
This is the most blatant moment I've seen where a contestant almost steered away from a bad answer based on an audible audience reaction. Does anyone know of an example where it
has actually happened? (I'm thinking of the classic "collective gasp from a shocked audience", as opposed to that UK cheating situation)

I attended a taping where that
seemed to happen. The gasp didn't come though on the broadcast. They might have edited it out.

Chuck seemed to be zoned out completely. I don't know if it was hotseatitis or not, but as someone
who is used to working "under presssure", it didn't seem to help him out this time.

And in Philly, we often refer to Atlantic City as AC (the first half of ACES). Maybe, being a flight attendant, he didn't know there's a train from Philly to AC.
