QOD Saturday 12-22 "MEET THE BEATLES"

#1 Post by fantine33 » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:35 am

You knew I couldn't go all month without this one, didn't you? The hardest part was keeping it down to 5 questions and the QOD. If I had my way, there would be a QOD Beatles WEEK (right after the OHW week, ha!).

12-22 THE BEATLES

1. What is Paul McCartney’s first name?

2. Who was “Dear Prudence” written about?

3. Who was the original drummer for the Beatles?

4. While still with the group, what was the only Beatles song that John Lennon recorded alone, accompanying himself with just an acoustic guitar?

5. Lots of people have been called “The Fifth Beatle” but Paul McCartney has stated that if anyone was the fifth Beatle it was this man.

QOD: What was the first Beatles song to feature the sitar?

5 Point Bonus: What were the names of the women screaming from the gallery in “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”?

5 Point Bonus Bonus: Who played Maxwell in the movie Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (apparently I was the only person in the known universe who liked the movie, ha!)?

Spoiler

I like the Beatles, but I'm by no means an expert.

1. James
2. The woman John Lennon lost his virginity to, at the age of 4.
3. Pete Best is usually the answer to this, but I think they had a couple of drummers before him. Unfortunately, I can't remember their names, so I'll have to go with Best.
4. The only acoustic song I can think of that Lennon sang was "Hide Your Love Away"...I don't think there's any drums or bass on that one.
5. Epstein. His mother was quite a prolific writer in the 70s.

QOD: Well, I'm not risking much, since I don't think my answers to 3 or 4 are right, and 5's shaky. So... "Within You and Without You".

5 Point Bonus: First one since #1 above that I'm sure of: Rose and Valerie

5 Point Bonus Bonus: I don't know about the known universe, but you are the only person I've ever met who liked the movie version of "Sgt. Pepper". I know Frampton was in it, but he was one of the leads, along with The Brothers Gibb. So he probably played Sgt. Pepper (or maybe Billy Shears). Aerosmith was in it....so it could be Steven Tyler. Oh, wait...I know Alice Cooper was in it too, so I'll guess him, since he makes more sense.
Edited to fix the spoiler tag.

Miss Fantine, I offer my most heart-broken apologies, but I do not know so very much about The Beatles, as they have not been a big group in my lifetime and, to the best of my knowledge, they have never appeared on the Animal Planet or a single Mr. Mozart CD. I maybe can give a couple of answers that I learned from on-line trivia games I played while I was supposed to be studying for Home School High School. These are all wonderful questions, though, and I look forward to learning the answers. My mom says I can hear their music on the internet, so I will listen some after I provide my answers and guesses, or lack thereof, in this great game.

1. James (I would like somebody named Mr. Jimmy)
2. Miss Prudence Somebody
3. Mr. Pete Best
4. Canon in D
5. Imagine

No QoD, or Bonus, or bonus bonus, because I have run out of beatley things to guess.

I may know a ''couple" of these (hee hee hee!). Bless you!
Spoiler

1-James
2-Mia Farrow's sister, who was with them on their pilgrimage with the Maharishi.
3-This could be tricky, as they went through a couple once
John, Paul and George were in place, but that was under names like "The Silver Beetles" and such. By the time they became "The Beatles" with an 'a', Pete Best was at the drum kit. He was sacked in favor of Ringo just before they hit the bigtime. So..Pete Best, final answer.
4-Julia
5-With apologies to Murray the K, it's George Martin. His contribution to the group's legacy cannot be overstated.

QOD: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown). I am a liitle nervous about this one. And of course, it's the QOD, so if I miss it, I lose mucho points. There's a sitar on the intro of the American Soundtrack version of "Help!", but I don't think that counts.
5PB: Rose and Valleri
5PBB: Steve Martin (he was a dentist). It took me a long time to forgive Peter Frampton for his involvement in that movie. I never forgave The Bee Gees. The double whammy of that and "Saturday Night Fever" were too much to overcome!

Ms. Annie, if you ever came to visit me, I would teach you everything you ever wanted to know about Mr. John Lennon, Mr. Paul McCartney, Mr. George Harrison, and Mr. Ringo Starr aka Mr. Richard Starkey. Probably MORE than you wanted to know. They are, to me, the rock & roll version of Mr. Mozart. They are the primary reason why I became such a music fanatic.

Manager Brian Epstein is the one I think of being called the fifth Beatle. Not sure if Sir Paul concurs as lots of people have been described that way.

Uhhhh, no.

I dunno. Never saw it. Other than the Bee Gees about the only name I recall from the movie is Peter Frampton so I will make that my guess.

Not only were you the only person to like it, I believe you may have been the only person to see it.
I have no idea is my official answer.
There's a great book out there about The Beatles recording sessions, I believe it's called The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions: The Abbey Road Years. It's very interesting account of what went on in the recording sessions an whatnot, you can actually see the group slowly breaking aparts as you read it.

"The Beatles ARE big, it's the music that got small." Ha!

My dear Annie, if you like Mr. Mozart, I guarantee you will like the Beatles. If you can talk your mom into a few mp3's for Christmas, I would suggest "In My Life." You'll enjoy the harpsichord-esque piano in it as well as the sentiment.

If she'll spring for an entire album, go for "The Beatles 1962-1966", as it has my two favourite Beatles songs on it, the aforementioned "In My Life" and "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away".

I love all 4. Take away ANY of the 4, and it's just not the same. They all had their unique contributions. The ultimate example of the sum being greater than the parts.

If a gun was held to my head, I'd say John over Paul, based on the creative factor. John was more innovative, not that Macca was a slouch in that department, either. But it'd be like having to choose between peanut butter and jelly to make a sandwich. To me, ya gotta have both.

My favorite Fab Four song? Depends on which day you ask me. I always flip-flop between "Strawberry Fields Forever" (this song takes me to another place) and "Here, There & Everywhere" (just a simple, beautiful melody...and THOSE HARMONIES!!), depending on whether or not there's a touch of melancholy in my mood at the time.
"Help!" (the lyrics are possibly Lennon's best..there's a very passionate cry for rescue in there, masked by a bouncy melody), "A Hard Day's Night" (the prime musical definition of Beatlemania to MY ears), "Hello Goodbye" (love the interplay between the lead and background vocals), and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (THIS is where George takes his place alongside of J & P to me) follow close behind.

Spoiler
1. James
2. Patti Deutsch
3. Pete Best
4. Hide Your Love Away
5. George Martin

QOD: No guess, just in case I remembered Paul's first name correctly.

Bonus: June and Valerie?

BonusBonus: Steve Martin?
