The most significant thing on this list is the complete omission of Atonement for both individual and ensemble awards. Picking Hairspray ahead of it indicates the actors didn't think much of it. I'm a bit surprised Michael Clayton got three individual nominations but no ensemble one either.

Nominations for Emile Hirsch and Ryan Gosling definately increase their chances of getting an Oscar nomination. If either gets nominated, they will have earned it, because they were very good performances. This should also pretty much ensure Hal Holbrook an Oscar nomination as well. Supporting actress is definitely thin, if Ruby Dee gets mentioned for essentially one scene. This really means the actors wanted to give her some kind of nod while she's still around. It's also a surprise that Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who had three solid performances this year, got completely shut out.

Also, the SAG awards have gotten a waiver from the Writers Guild, which means that a writer will work on the script. This is actually much more significant than just having a few stale jokes to tell. If the writers picketed the awards, the actors would probably honor the picket line and there wouldn't be much of a show.

The Golden Globes have not gotten a waiver, which means there is a very good chance the actors won't show up for that, and an awards show with just a few producers going up on stage will be a ratings and public relations disaster. The Oscars also haven't gotten a waiver yet. My guess is that they eventually will, but the writers will make an example of the Golden Globes and that the actors (whose contract expires next summer and who have essentially the same residuals issues) will back them.

Good points on the writers and awards shows, SSS.

The Golden Globes misnus the actors getting giddy at their tables will be very dull indeed.

I was VERY glad to see that AMC's Mad Men was nominated in the TV ensemble category. Deservedly so.
