So I got the Mac yesterday

and I'm already annoyed.

They sell you on how easy everything is. Well, I turn it on and it gives me the list of wireless networks available. Mine is included in there along with a few of my neighbors'. I click on it and it tells me that there is an error with AirPort. I try again about a dozen times and nothing. I call their supposedly ultra-helpful technical support desk and get a guy who asks me to actually plug it in to the router. I do it and the I connect easily. He tells me that that is his job and somebody else can then help with the wireless aspect. He puts me on hold for literally 20 minutes (coming back every five minutes or so to tell me to be patient, he's still waiting for that office to pick up), and then comes back to say that he didn't realize that he had been disconnected and that office hours are now over and nobody is there.

So, I now have to wait until I get home from work this afternoon/evening in order to go through the same thing again. My PCs have no trouble finding my wireless and the Mac has no problem when it is plugged in, so I'm thinking that there is some preference or switch that needs to flipped on the Mac before it works. At least I hope it's that easy.

I just got a MAC last week as well...and the bugger is definitely more complicated and less intuitive than I remember them being when I used them in college.

I do like Plug'n'Play, though (although my Epson printer/scanner didn't work properly, my other one did- so I'm supposing I'll have to call Epson tech support).

One thing I'm finding extremely annoying is that there seem to be so many things with the i-programs that exist solely to get you to buy more Apple products/services.

Haven't tried my wireless yet- but the computer sits right where my router is, so I'm not worried about that...yet.

I was Pro-Mac for a long time, until my issues with iTunes.

Then a student destroyed a thumb drive of mine (my fault, not his -- neither of us knew any better) by connecting it to a Mac after it had already been formatted for PC.

Be wary, new Mac owners -- thumb drives and other portables are not compatible across platforms, and they will cause you agony, if my experience is any indication.

I understand your concerns, Starfish.

I had the same wireless issues with my IBM laptop, though ... Still haven't connected through to India yet.

Gave up and got my Mac.

Did you look on the forums? I found the discussion groups very helpful to solve issues.

I didn't have any trouble connecting with my daughter's laptop and the airport. I just had trouble password-protecting my airport so others couldn't use it.

I'll look up some stuff at home and post later to see if I can help you through this.

It might be the router after all. Tracey talked to Apple today and the couldn't figure it out, so she called Verizon and they were very helpful and suggested that something just needed to be downloaded. I'll call them when I get home from work and, hopefully, be surfing away this evening.

There are reasons Apple sells less than 8 of every 100 home computers. Even less in the business world where real work needs to be done and real IT people get to make the choices.

Hi, I hope it does the trick. You'll love the Mac once you get going. They are much less stressful than PC's. I work on PC's all day and would much rather be on a Mac. And they are NOT just toys. serious-work gets done on them, too! you'll see. . .

That might be changing, though. All my college-age nieces and nephews look down on PCs as pedestrian and every high school kid I know wants a Mac.

My brother, who runs a hedge fund in Tokyo, says Macs are hugely popular there. I wonder if it's because the Chinese aren't making fake ones ...
