I'm working on 16. I'll never get to 40, started too late (28) and keep getting deferred for a year at a time (overseas travel to malaria areas).

So if he's helped about 1,000 people, I've helped about 400.

I have a feeling that's a very fluid number. Some of my blood likely went directly to transfusions since I'm O+, some may have gone to research resulting in new transfusion processes or better matching techniques. Or maybe none of it went to research since I donated all of it in the United Blood Services system away from most major research centers on the coasts.

I dunno -- I still like to think that I've helped save a few young lives.

Way back I used to give blood reguarly and had given 16 times prior to being diagnosed with Crohn's disease and was put on medication that was one of the ones that was listed as being prohibited in blood donation. So I used to tell folks I have given all the blood in my body (16 pts is the avg. blood volume, IIRC) and I can't give any more.

As an aside over 20 years ago I had surgery and have been medication free, so I was able to donate again, except now when I went to donate at a local drive about a year ago, during their screening, they asked if I ever lived outside the U.S. and if so where and how long. It turns out that living in Switzerland for nearly 8 years has put me back on the banned list, they said it had something to do with Mad Cow. So, I'm back to no go on the donor thing.
