just checking in! Question for the group. . .

Hi All,
Didn't mean to be so absent, barely had time to lurk, but all's well in Lilyville. Job's great, but so busy I barely have time to breathe. Just finished the plagiarism tour, giving the talk and discussion 45 times. Each different. Funny how some kids try to look for the loopholes, too. Had great copyright discussion as well with music, movies and inventions. Many didn't know who Sonny Bono was so they didn't get the irony of his sponsoring a copyright extension law.
Trying to limit how many committees I get sucked into, but it's hard to say no.
Would like to pick the collective brain with something! You always come up with great ideas. I need to name a search engine and come up with a cool name for it.
any ideas?
ps. Hope you all have a great holiday season. Am enjoying Duel, but definitely have to Tivo it or else I'd fall asleep between questions.

Bloodhound
"Always on the trail."
Of course, I personally would like Brownhound better.

Calling it Annie Camaro would make as much sense as Yahoo, Google or Dogpile. Bloodhound is good.

I keep thinking of names that I think might work but then I discover that they are already being used.
Great minds think alike.

How about either "Sherlock" or, if as is likely that is taken, "Mycroft"?

Here are a few ideas:
Artemis
Boost
Jager
Nimrod
Pyramid
Rigel
Zephyr
I'll think about it some more.

I just looked on the internet. "Bloodhound.com" and "bloodhoundsearch.com" are already taken, but "bloodhoundtrail" is still waiting for Miss Lily's students.

Can you tell us something about the search engine that would make its name meaningful? Is it specialized for a particular subject area or location? Is there something unique about its search algorithms that makes it stand out from the exisiting search engines?

One of the other librarians here had a few ideas:
Lasso, Lariat, Reata, something like that.
Sesame or Open Sesame
Boomerang

I can make the search engine design to be anything I want. I figure if I get a good name, I could create the engine around the name. I'm thinking something literary like a search engine for mysteries, or graphic novels. I love some of your suggestions.

perhaps a dog theme and it can be a search engine/directory for dog spas, groomers, only the best and kindest vets, vacation destinations friendly to dogs and of course, Dog Island!

I still don't understand. Are you doing this for a school library or are you trying to become the next Google? If the former, what are its needs that aren't already solved by what's already available?
Picking a catchy name and then building a product around it sounds like something the PHB would ask Dilbert to do!

Wiggins.
Especially given the things lily would like to be able to search for.
Anyone get the referent?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Marley, it sounds like a project for a graduate class, but I could be wrong, as nitrah says.

Lily, I'm curious. What is the purpose of a specialized or limited-purpose search engine, when I can find, say, mystery novels or dog groomers on a conventional search site -- and far, far more?

Since Lily is at a school, maybe the search engine needs to be not so broad as Google, so that certain kinds of pages would not come up for kids to see them. There are also lots of web pages that do not have tags (like maybe on her intranet), but that this kind of engine would still be able to search.
I guess what I mean is, maybe it would be a searcher for her specific library databases, or those of the local school system.

All of your reasons are good ones, but I should have thought of this one for myself. When Annie was typing in addresses to see if they already belonged to anyone, such as "bloodhound.com," one name she tried was "dogsnose." She was most surprised to discover that she was staring at a porn emporium.
She asked many questions.

No great ideas here (and, no, I'm not talking about the thread), but I'll throw a couple out anyway:
whatchalookN4?
Maybe: "OnceMore,WithFeeling"
Pretty weak. Sorry.

it's for a workshop on online searching, web page evaluation. . .
we have to design a search engine to meet whatever needs we want it to. I just need a cool name to run with and build the gadget around it. There's a site called Rollio that creates search engines.
