Lyrically Speaking 12-19-07 Scoring & Such

#1 Post by traininvain » Wed Dec 19, 2007 8:21 am

Well I took a spin of the LS Date Wheel and it landed in the 70's, it's 1977.

LS #13……………………………………1977

Have Fun & Good Luck!

1. I was so young when I was born
My eyes could not yet see
And by the time of my first dawn
Somebody holding me, they said

2. Now, here I go again
I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself

3. Baby, here we stand again
Where we've been
So many times before
Even though you looked so sure
As I was watching you
Walking out my door

4. Relax, said the night man
We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

5. Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people I`ve trusted
I`ve got to go out and make my way
I might get rich you know
I might get busted

6. At a tombstone bar
In a juke-joint car
He made a stop
Just long enough to grab
A handle off the top

7. Too many broken hearts
Have fallen in the river
Too many lonely souls
Have drifted out to sea

8. Hey, how you feeling
Are you still the same
Don't you realize
The things we did, we did
Were all for real, not a dream
I just can't believe
They've all faded out of view

9. The big hands were calloused
He looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shaking
His big heart was breaking
He turned to the woman and said

10. Demonstrating love and affection
That you give so openly, yeah
I like the way you make me
Feel about you, baby
Want the whole wide world to see

Just a little note on today's game, I usually double-check the lyrics against few sites to make sure they are fairly accurate, unfortunately last night I was pressed for time and was unable to double-check today's lyrics. So if they're off by a word or two you have my apologies.

The Best of My Love - I don't know who sings it, dammit!

I'm pretty sure I know 3, 7, and 8 too, though all the time in the world probably isn't going to help me pull them out of my head since I can't get a melody to go with any of them. This is the first LS this month where I've at least recognized most of the lyrics....

Nothing wrong with that - it might discourage potential Googlers.

Spoiler
1. Crackerbox Palace - George Harrison. This was one of the first 45s I ever bought.
2. Dreams - Fleetwood Mac. One of my top 5 favorites of the year.
3. Nope
4. Hotel California - Eagles. Probably also in the top 5 of the year. I'll know you are inside my head if my favorite song of the year (and possibly my favorite of the decade) is in here. I'll let you know at the end (or when it shows).
5. Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band. For many years, I had no idea what he was saying and always sung, "Big Big South Carolina, Don't Carry me too far away".
6. Nope
7. The Things We Do For Love - 10cc
8. Telephone Line - ELO
9. Lucille - Kenny Rogers
10. Best of my Love - Emotions

1977 is one of my favorite years for music (along with 1972, 1980, 1984, and 1988). My favorite song of the year, though, is not in here. It's Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke.

2. Dreams/Fleetwood Mac

4. Hotel California/The Eagles

9. Lucille/Kenny Rogers

10. Having My Baby/Paul Anka

I wrote a long, long piece about how this song is awful; having babies is not awful, far from it, but this song, if it is the song I think it is, is; then the computer timed me out of the web site as I sat to contemplate my other answers

That'll learn me

This is the LS that I dragged around with me while I was out shopping, but I left it in the car so I wouldn't look TOO weird in the Target....

Spoiler

Have Fun & Good Luck!

1. I was so young when I was born
My eyes could not yet see
And by the time of my first dawn
Somebody holding me, they said

Familiar, but can't pull it...

2. Now, here I go again
I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself

Dreams, Fleetwood Mac

3. Baby, here we stand again
Where we've been
So many times before
Even though you looked so sure
As I was watching you
Walking out my door

I have "JB" written beside this. So I'm guessing I think it's Jackson Browne, or I thought so on Wednesday....

4. Relax, said the night man
We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

Hotel California, the Eagles. I don't really like this song but love this album...

5. Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people I`ve trusted
I`ve got to go out and make my way
I might get rich you know
I might get busted

Jet Airliner, Steve Miller Band. The more I hear them, the more I dislike them....

6. At a tombstone bar
In a juke-joint car
He made a stop
Just long enough to grab
A handle off the top

This is Exhibit A in the case for not answering right away, because I had convinced myself this was Elton John but couldn't get the lyrics to fit any of his songs. Then I had the epiphany of "making like a beeline heading for the borderline" and realized DUH! it was Lido Shuffle by Boz Skaggs.

7. Too many broken hearts
Have fallen in the river
Too many lonely souls
Have drifted out to sea

Things We Do For Love, but don't know by who or whom or whatever....

8. Hey, how you feeling
Are you still the same
Don't you realize
The things we did, we did
Were all for real, not a dream
I just can't believe
They've all faded out of view

Telephone Line, ELO

9. The big hands were calloused
He looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shaking
His big heart was breaking
He turned to the woman and said

Lucille, Kenny Rogers

10. Demonstrating love and affection
That you give so openly, yeah
I like the way you make me
Feel about you, baby
Want the whole wide world to see

Exhibit B. I thought this was called Emotions, and I couldn't think of anything but the Sylvers, but they were Hot Line, so then I remembered the SONG wasn't Emotions, but the group was.

Best of my Love, Emotions

Just a little note on today's game, I usually double-check the lyrics against few sites to make sure they are fairly accurate, unfortunately last night I was pressed for time and was unable to double-check today's lyrics. So if they're off by a word or two you have my apologies.

Pretty sure that I bought this album at Jimmy’s Music World for $2.99, later found out that “Jimmy” had some kind of mob ties, they were only open for about a year. Song is about the former residence of comedian Lord Buckley, who Harrison and The Beatles were big fans of. From his Thirty Three & 1/3 (yes kids the speed of the turntable) album, which also included This Song, his ‘answer’ to his being sued (and losing) for plagiarism over MY Sweet Lord/He’s So Fine. Great video for it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuNH1uZyaH0, as well as for Crackerbox Palace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yla9-Vdr ... re=related
Sigh, music used to be so much fun.

2. Now, here I go again
I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself
#1 Dreams – Fleetwood Mac

No matter where you went back then Fleetwood Mac was there, a gigantic album, this song has an equally gigantic bassline.

3. Baby, here we stand again
Where we've been
So many times before
Even though you looked so sure
As I was watching you
Walking out my door
#23 Here Come Those Tears Again – Jackson Browne

Another heartbreak song, has my heart been broken THAT many times, sheesh. I seem to remember playing this song over and over again, there was no crying though.

4. Relax, said the night man
We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave
#1 Hotel California – The Eagles

At some point someone will tell me what this song it all about, otherwise I still like it along with the rest of the album.

5. Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people I`ve trusted
I`ve got to go out and make my way
I might get rich you know
I might get busted
#8 Jet Airliner – Steve Miller Band

Another Jimmy’s Music World special at $2.99. This album was supposedly recorded during the same sessions as Fly Like An Eagle hence the two albums sound very similar.

6. At a tombstone bar
In a juke-joint car
He made a stop
Just long enough to grab
A handle off the top
#11 Lido – Boz Scaggs

I didn’t appreciate Boz and this album until years later, that was my loss.

7. Too many broken hearts
Have fallen in the river
Too many lonely souls
Have drifted out to sea
#5 The Things We Do For Love – 10cc

What’s not to love about 10cc? Another solid pop song! And yes their monicker is somewhat dirty, by 1970’s standards at least.

8. Hey, how you feeling
Are you still the same
Don't you realize
The things we did, we did
Were all for real, not a dream
I just can't believe
They've all faded out of view
#7 Telephone Line – ELO

I’ve always said that ELO was my “guilty pleasure”, but that’s not really fair, they were a very good group. From the fine A New World Record album, another huge album from the 1976/1977 years.

9. The big hands were calloused
He looked like a mountain
For a minute I thought I was dead
But he started shaking
His big heart was breaking
He turned to the woman and said
#5 Lucille – Kenny Rogers

Kenny my want to cover something from The Dead Kennedy’s Plastic Surgery Disasters, in the meantime this song is right up there with Bobby Goldsboro’s Honey.

10. Demonstrating love and affection
That you give so openly, yeah
I like the way you make me
Feel about you, baby
Want the whole wide world to see
#1 The Best of My Love - The Emotions

I always think about the film Boogie Nights when I hear this song, and it makes me smile.
