QOD Wednesday 12-19 "FIRST WORDS"

#1 Post by fantine33 » Wed Dec 19, 2007 7:57 am

Today you've got the first line of a book. You only have to give the title, but if you kick in the author you'll get an extra fiver for your troubles. You need the exact title on these rather than on the finish the poem where I gave some leeway as long as you had the main gist. This isn't because I put in some book with a crazy parenthetical title or anything. In fact, these titles would be kind of hard to mess up if you know them. I chose pretty clear cut and direct ones, I guess because lines have to pretty be simple if you remember them (two of these I looked up).

12/19 "FIRST WORDS"

CARO! Go back right now and read the directions, dammit!

1. Call Me Ishmael.

2. It was a pleasure to burn.

2. Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.

3. Serene was a word you could put to Brooklyn, New York.

4. The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call "out there".

5. What can you say about a 25 year old girl who died?

QOD Note: You need the title only, no bonuses for the author. Don't automatically think you don't know it, you might be able to work backwards, as the Bonuses give some clues to help you.

QOD: The sweat wis lashing oafay Sick Boy; he wis trembling.

5 Point Bonus: Who played the aforementioned Sick Boy in the 1996 movie?

5 Point Bonus: He was the first husband of what actress (who is more humanitarian than full time nut job these days)?

Not a good category for me - my literary tastes run in different directions

Caro (KT) has had at least two occasions when he had to kick his own ass because he didn't read the directions. As someone who has done that as well, I put in the reminder since there was added points in the main section again. I also thought it would jog other people to go back and read them again, if only to see wtf I was talking about.

Well, I did go four days (I think) without a mistake, so I had to get my average back up. Ha! I put in Call Me Ishmael afterwards because I thought I needed an easier one in there to start than #2, which was originally #1. I'm going to leave it, so there's just the opportunity for extra points today. YAY!

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Extra points are great - however it didn't do me any good because I didn't know one of the #2s. Still in all, you're doing a great job with a tough task, fannie, so don't get discouraged.

Spoiler
1. Moby Dick, by the second most boringest famous author, Herman Melville.

2. Rebecca, by Daphne DuMaurier. I can't see the word Manderley without hearing Sir Larry saying it in my head.

3. No idea. WAG A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith

4. In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote?

5. IknowIknowIknowIknow this. Dammit. I can hear the voiceover from some movie. I'm guessing Steel Magnolias, but I don't know who wrote it.

QoD: No guess

Bonus: Hmmmm. From the dialect, I would've guessed something out of Color Purple or some such African-American type movie. But from the BonusBonus, which I want to answer Angelina Jolie, I'm going to guess someone else. Unfortunately, I don't know who preceded Studleyman Pitt, so I'll guess someone colorful like Jason Patric.

BonusBonus: Angelina Jolie
