Lyrically Speaking 12-18-07 Scoring & Such

I thought we'd take it back a bit and find out what made the 60's such an interesting time music wise, it's 1968.

LS #12……………………………………1968

Good Luck & have Hun!

1. Ain`t no sense in staying inside
If the weather`s fine and you got the time
It`s your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day
Either way,

2. Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

3. I know now that you're not a plaything
Not a toy or a puppet on a string

4. You fought hard and you saved and learned,
but all of it's going to burn.
And your mind, your tiny mind,
you know you've really been so blind.
Now 's your time burn your mind.
You're falling far too far behind.
Oh no, oh no, oh no, you gonna burn!

5. The note said, "Mrs. Johnson, you're wearing your dresses way too high
It's reported you've been drinking and a-runnin' 'round with men and going wild
And we don't believe you ought to be bringing up your little girl this way"
It was signed by the secretary...

6. She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad, but what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me, and hugged my neck

7. Ooh, love, to hold you
Ooh, love, to kiss you
Ooh, love, I love it so
Ooh, love, you`re sweeter
Sweeter than sugar
Ooh, love, I wont let you go

8. With all the charms of a woman
You`ve kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you`re
Old enough to give me love and
Now it hurts to know the truth

9. Girl, I heard you're getting married
Heard you're getting married
This time you're really sure
And this is the end
They say you really mean it
This guy's the one that makes you feel
So safe, so sane and so secure

10. But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao,
You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow.

I've looked at love that way

Both Sides Now, Judy Collins

3. I know now that you're not a plaything
Not a toy or a puppet on a string

Ack! Familiar!

4. You fought hard and you saved and learned,
but all of it's going to burn.
And your mind, your tiny mind,
you know you've really been so blind.
Now 's your time burn your mind.
You're falling far too far behind.
Oh no, oh no, oh no, you gonna burn!

Must be called Fire, don't know the group or person or whatever...

5. The note said, "Mrs. Johnson, you're wearing your dresses way too high
It's reported you've been drinking and a-runnin' 'round with men and going wild
And we don't believe you ought to be bringing up your little girl this way"
It was signed by the secretary...

Harper Valley PTA, I always think Jeannie Rae O, but I know it's Jeannie C Reilly or Riley or however she spells it...

6. She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad, but what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me, and hugged my neck

GAG!!! Honey, Bobby Goldsboro. Dave Barry always has a field day with this one.

7. Ooh, love, to hold you
Ooh, love, to kiss you
Ooh, love, I love it so
Ooh, love, you`re sweeter
Sweeter than sugar
Ooh, love, I wont let you go

Nope

8. With all the charms of a woman
You`ve kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you`re
Old enough to give me love and
Now it hurts to know the truth

Young Girl, some guy.

9. Girl, I heard you're getting married
Heard you're getting married
This time you're really sure
And this is the end
They say you really mean it
This guy's the one that makes you feel
So safe, so sane and so secure

Something like The Worst Thing that Can Happen to Me, some guy?

10. But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao,
You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow.

Okay. More like it! Revolution, The Beatles

LS #12……………………………………1968

Good Luck & Have Fun!

1. Ain`t no sense in staying inside
If the weather`s fine and you got the time
It`s your chance to wake up and plan another brand new day
Either way,
#3 A Beautiful Morning – The Rascals

I went through a period in which I was a Rascals fanatic, I always thought that it was a shame that they were kind of left forgotten, but they were really good ‘Blue-eyed soul’ music. No penalty for anyone who threw in a “Young” before Rascals.

2. Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way
#8 Both Sides Now – Judy Collins

A great Joni Mitchell song

3. I know now that you're not a plaything
Not a toy or a puppet on a string
#2 Cry Like a Baby – The Boxtops

Lead singer Alex Chilton was only about 16 when he first started recording with The Boxtops, somehow he managed to sound about 10 yrs+ older. He went on to form the seminal Big Star, which influenced many groups including The replacements who wrote a song about him.

4. You fought hard and you saved and learned,
but all of it's going to burn.
And your mind, your tiny mind,
you know you've really been so blind.
Now 's your time burn your mind.
You're falling far too far behind.
Oh no, oh no, oh no, you gonna burn!
#2 Fire – The Crazy World of Arthur Brown

Technically Aurthur Brown was the name of the artist, and the name of the album was The Crazy World of…nonetheless this song still sounds demented. T-Bone, I didn’t know about Carl Palmer playing drums on this one, thanks for pointing it out to me.

5. The note said, "Mrs. Johnson, you're wearing your dresses way too high
It's reported you've been drinking and a-runnin' 'round with men and going wild
And we don't believe you ought to be bringing up your little girl this way"
It was signed by the secretary...
#1 The Harper Valley PTA – Jeannie C. Reilly

Only in 1968 could the above mentioned Fire hit #2 and this song hit #1. strange times. I probably haven’t heard this song since 1968, but it’s been stuck in my head since then. It’ pretty scary how many remember Jeannie C. Reilly’s name.

6. She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad, but what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me, and hugged my neck
#1 Honey – Bobby Goldsboro

I swear they played this song every hour on the hour back then, and I’m still not sure who or what it’s about. Super sappy is the best way to describe it, but it lives on in my childhood memories.

7. Ooh, love, to hold you
Ooh, love, to kiss you
Ooh, love, I love it so
Ooh, love, you`re sweeter
Sweeter than sugar
Ooh, love, I wont let you go
#4 Yummy, Yummy, Yummy – The Ohio Express

I was in second grade and in love with my teacher when this was a hit, I remember singing it over and over again. My teacher got married that same year and broke my heart, the first time in a long line of heartbreaks.

8. With all the charms of a woman
You`ve kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe you`re
Old enough to give me love and
Now it hurts to know the truth
#2 Young Girl – Gary Puckett & the Union Gap

How many times have I sung this song while walking through a mall? If there were a thought police they’d probably arrest me.

9. Girl, I heard you're getting married
Heard you're getting married
This time you're really sure
And this is the end
They say you really mean it
This guy's the one that makes you feel
So safe, so sane and so secure
#3 Worst That Could Happen – Brooklyn Bridge

Talk about your heartbreak songs. Nice mention of The Crests by Ear on this one.

10. But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao,
You ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow.
#12 Revolution – The Beatles

I always loved these lines.

I gave ghost an extra point because she cursed while answering this one, and it made me laugh.

Lead singer Alex Chilton was only about 16 when he first started recording with The Boxtops, somehow he managed to sound about 10 yrs+ older. He went on to form the seminal Big Star, which influenced many groups including The replacements who wrote a song about him.

I saw The Box Tops as part of an oldies concert a couple of years ago. All of the original members. Chilton looked like he'd rather have been stretched out on the rack while undergoing root canal sans novocaine, than be up on that stage. I think he managed a half-hearted smile once during their performance.

Big Star was indeed a tremendous influence on many bands in the genre of power pop as well as alternative/indie pop. I do love my power pop.
