I've never heard of the Duggars, so I would've lost on this question.

This is because what some call a yam in North America isn't an actual yam.

Of course, they aren't actual potatoes either. Neither name for sweet potatoes is very accurate. Yams are in the Dioscorea family, sweet potatoes are in the Convolvulaceae family, and potatoes are in the Solanaceae family. True yams are mostly grown in Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Sweet potatoes originated in Central and South America and were domesticated thousands of years ago. Apparently the resemblance of the local plant to the African one by imported slaves is what led to the name yam being applied to both plants. And, they got the "sweet potato" name because they resemble true potatoes.
Should have just come up with a different name altogether.
