Dead or Alive? Game 17 12/17/07

Identify the following people as Dead or Alive. Then take a guess at the theme—four words in my notes, although it could have been two if I wasn’t so nitpicky with myself.

1. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
2. Theodore Dreiser
3. Newton B. Tarkington
4. General Lewis Wallace
5. Jessamyn White
6. George Ade
7. Norman Bridwell
8. James W. Riley
9. James A. Thom
10. Rex Stout

FINALLY, I WAS ABLE TO STAY UP ALL NIGHT AND HAVE A CHANCE AT GETTING THE BONUS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT WAS A SCREWY RULE TO GIVE POINTS ONLY TO THE FIRST FIVE CORRECT ANSWERS, BUT NOW I'LL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. HAVING SAID ALL THAT, I'LL GUESS THAT THE THEME IS AMERICAN AUTHORS, AND IF THAT ISN'T SPECIFIC ENOUGH, I'LL SAY AUTHORS BORN IN INDIANA.

Spoiler
1. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. = Recently Dead
2. Theodore Dreiser = Long time Dead
3. Newton B. Tarkington = Dead
4. General Lewis Wallace = Long time Dead
5. Jessamyn White = Alive
6. George Ade = Alive
7. Norman Bridwell = Alive
8. James W. Riley = Dead
9. James A. Thom = Dead
10. Rex Stout = Dead

Hmm.... 'novelists' is just one word, and you are thinking two or four words... Lew Wallace did Ben Hur, but I can't think of anything else offhand, Rex Stout was mostly crime stuff (Nero Wolfe), Vonnegut had a whole lot of stuff, much of if fantasy-like... Dreiser did a lot of dreary depressing stuff... I will go with 'Writers of Novels in which bad things happen to people'

The ones I know for sure (assuming 2 is Booth, I never knew his first name was Newton, that's kewl!) had movies made from their novels, but I can't figure out how to put that into four words or less. And I can't think of anything else that Lew Wallace and Kurt Vonnegut might have in common with Rex Stout. Ha!

I"m also going to try for much needed bonus points by asking if #5 is really Jessamyn West (although it's just as possible that I never heard of Jessamyn White, so don't smack me too hard).

Another game for me, without a professional athlete in the list!

1. Dead
2. Dead
3. Dead
4. Alive? -- unless by any possible chance you might have mistyped Jessamyn West, author of "Friendly Persuasion," in which case she's dead.
5. Dead
6. Dead
7. Alive (I know this only because of Annie. Bridewell is one of her favorite writers and one of the first she ever read.)
8. Dead
9. Alive? (I have no idea who this is.)
10. Dead

Theme -- fiction writers (If they were all born in Indiana or something, I don't know that.)

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
