His father was a band director in a town near here.

"Another Auld Lang Syne" is one of my favorite songs by anyone.

Dang! I didn't know he was sick. Only 56. Wow.

Dan Fogelberg is the answer to a personal trivia question of mine I like to stump people with....

Who is the only musician I've ever seen in concert?

My Mom won tickets off the radio to a concert he held here back in 1984 (Part of his tour he held after releasing "Language of Love"). She couldn't get anyone else to go with her, so she took me. Even though I was only 9 at the time, I was still familiar with a lot of his older songs... though I didn't realize until the concert that he had been the one who sung them....

Never been to another concert since. I'd rather listen to the radio for free....

Ouch! I didn't know he was sick either. It must have been the horrible fast-moving kind.

I too have seen Fogelberg in concert. He donated his services for a special emergency services project here in Colorado, just charged for the backup band and the equipment setup, and at $15 a ticket cleared enough to bring the project to within $5,000 of what they needed.

I don't know if he still had his home in Colorado. I assume he was living here when he wrote Leader of the Band, my second-favorite Fogelberg song. "And I’m in Colorado when I’m not in some hotel living out this life I’ve chose and have come to know so well. I thank you for the music and your stories of the road. I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go. I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough and Papa I don't think I said I love you near enough."

My favorite is off the Twin Sons of Different Mothers album with the other Berg, Tim Weisberg -- Power of Gold. I wore that tape out.

Back to the concert, he sang three new unreleased songs. I bet my date that the one in the middle would be the hit, and I was right -- "Make Love Stay."

That's a shame -- I'm sure he had more songs to write.

"Leader of the Band" was a song about his relationship with his father, IIRC.

My wife keeps the radio in the kitchen tuned to Sunny 99.1 this time of year. All Christmas music all the time. I know, I know. Oh well.

Anyway, yesterday at about noon they were playing "Same Auld Lang Syne." I asked her if she had finally gotten tired of Sunny, thinking that she'd changed the station. She said that that was a Christmas song.

I'm like: "What?"

She's like: "That's the only time they play that song."

I'm like: "What?" This really is Sunny?

She's like: "Yes."

I'm like: "Well, that's sure as hell not a Christmas song."

She's like: "Well, yes it is."

[I had actually forgotten or just not realized that he does mention that it was Chrismas Eve -- probably just because he couldn't think of anything else to rhyme with sleeve.]

She's like: "You just don't like the song because you think it's 'too sappy'."

I'm like: "I'm not saying that it's too sappy. It's just doesn't have anything to do with Christmas, or Jesus."

My smart-ass step-son (who just turned 10) chimes in with "Jesus doesn't have anything to do with Christmas." [Mind you, he and my daughter were going to be participating in the Chritmas program at the church within 6 hours featuring -- guess what? -- the birth of Jesus!] [Don't worry. He's not dumb. It's just that the chanel between his smart-ass and his mouth doesn't pass through his brain a lot of the time.]

[This went on for awhile.]

So, finally I'm like: "I'm going to e-mail Sunny 99.1 using your account and inform them that they have caused considerable family discord by offering that song up as a Christmas song."

Now I'm glad I didn't do it. I'm wondering whether they played that song because of his death, or whether they play it every year (as my wife insists).

Funny thing is, I'm sure that she's right that she's never heard that song except around Christmas. I'm reminded of Steely Dan's line: "Hey nineteen. That's 'Retha Franklin. She don't remember the Queen of Soul."

I just checked, and "Same Auld Lang Syne" came out about the same time as Steely Dan's "Goucho." She was nine years shy of nineteen then. I guess that explains a lot.

Oh well. I guess tonight I'll ask her if she knows who the Queen of Soul is. Just for the heck of it.

I'm really sorry to hear about Fogelberg's death. I wasn't aware that he had been ill.

Bpth XM radio and our local "all-Christmas, all the time" station play "Another Auld Lang Syne" as a Christmas song, presumably because snow is mentioned in the lyrics.

I am about 25% sure of this.

I can justify SALS being played on a holiday music station, but it takes some late-20th/early 21st century context.

As you pointed out, the setting of the song is Christmas Eve. If the second line of the song is "The snow was falling, Christmas Eve," that is all some programming directors need to include it on the playlist. After all, is "Winter Wonderland" a Christmas song? Or "I've got my love to keep me Warm?"

Second, the song title and ending place it firmly in the tiny ranks of "Songs appropriate to be played as part of a New Year's celebration." I personally don't think of it as a Christmas song, but the bittersweet-ness of it certainly plays into my feelings on most New Year's Eves. And hey, it's not Barry Manilow, y'know?

But since the 21st century has seen fit not only to have radio stations which play exclusively seasonal music for certain months out of the year, it doesn't bother me (much) to see New Year's music being lumped with Christmas music under the heading of Holiday music.

Yeah. I know. Still, though, I can distinguish between Winter Wonderland and this one. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Winter Wonderland first appeared on a holiday album. (Not gonna bother to look it up though.)

Anyway, given nitrah's and mrk's posts, I'm inclined to think that the song was played as planned (and not just as a tribute). That makes it all the more coincidental that we'd have had that issue come up on the very day that Fogelberg died.

Reminds me of when Ricky williams broke Tony Dorsett's career-yards record in the game againt A&M. They showed Dorsett on the UT sidelines. He'd put on a few pounds, and I said: "Wonder what Flip Wilson is on the sidelines for?" (He really did look a lot like him that day.)

Later found out that Flip Wilson had died. Can't remember now if he'd died the day before, or that day, or the day after, or whatever. It was just odd that I hadn't thought of, much less mentioned, Flip Wilson for years, and then that.

I love Sunny 99.1's web site. You can find out the name and artist of everything they've played, minute by minute, for the past 7 days. It appears that Same Auld Lang Syne is just part of their holiday music rotation. It has been played at least twice today. Do they have any announcers, or is this all done by computer?

Oh well....I guess a lot of us have put on a few pounds since Tony's glory days - yes, I really was young & thin in 1979:

Topic? Sad about Dan Fogelberg -- I always liked him. He was young to die of prostate cancer. BTW, cancer in the prostate doesn't kill anyone -- it's when it metastasizes that it gets ya. That's why we sometimes do a bone scan before we treat our prostate patients. Once it goes to bone, treating the prostate itself is pointless. We treat the bone mets then when it's needed for pain control.

I have been sick & haven't been to work, but I'm sure the rest of my radiation crew have heard of Dan's death.

He had been sick for awhile..I remember hearing quite some time ago that he had the illness and was investigating "alternative, experimental" methods to treat it..I remember thinking "he's probably not long for this world"..but, as I said, that was a while back, so whatever he did, he apparently put up a long and good fight.

I'll be honest, I didn't like his later stuff (many of them big hits) nearly as much as his earlier material.."Captured Angel" and "Netherlands" I quite liked..my favorite album by him (and a cd I still play often) is "Souvenirs"..Joe Walsh produced it and performs on many tracks, with contributions by Don Henley, Randy Meisner, and Glen Frey of the Eagles, Graham Nash, and Gerry Beckley of America. Great songs like "Part of the Plan", "There's a Place in the World For a Gambler", "Morning Sky", "Illinois", and others. One of the best in the "California Soft Rock" genre (although he was born in Illinois).

RIP, Dan.

Great songs like "Part of the Plan", "There's a Place in the World For a Gambler", "Morning Sky", "Illinois", and others. One of the best in the "California Soft Rock" genre (although he was born in Illinois).

RIP, Dan.

I completely agree. "Netherlands" is a wonderful album, as is "Souvenirs" ("Part of the Plan" is particularly good). But there are two songs on his "Windows and Walls" that I like best of his stuff. The title song is absolutely heartbreaking, about an elderly woman who lives a solitary existence:

"But nobody ever comes by anymore
Nobody ever calls
Most days she sits and just stares
At the windows and walls"

And the other is a song that was, I guess, based on a newspaper article describing the murder of a young waitress by a drug-addled customer who picked her up one night. Called "Tucson, Arizona (Gazette)," it isn't all that brilliant lyrically, but it's rhythm and orchestration just hit me every time I listen to it.

Then there's "Twin Sons of Different Mothers" with Tim Weisberg. Acoustic guitar and flute...wow.

So you can keep "Same Auld Lang Syne" and "The Leader of the Band" and all that treacly stuff he did in the 80s...I choose to remember the early stuff.
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

It appears that Same Auld Lang Syne is just part of their holiday music rotation. It has been played at least twice today. Do they have any announcers, or is this all done by computer?

They have announcers. Especially in the morning. They are a big 'listen at work' station with lots of contests for call-ins.

Its button 2 on my car radio. I only listen while driving.

Wow - way too young - I would have guessed he had more than ten years on me. I saw him at the Meadowlands - spring of '82 is my guess.

I'll a few more memeorable sappy songs.

Once Upon a Time

And don't forget "Run for the Roses" What would ESPN do without it on the first Saturday in May?

I tend to like his older stuff more also.
