My daughter...

got a Fantastic Fabulous grade on her math quiz today. I've never seen this grade before on a test taken by my kids.

She spent an hour on her hair last night, rather than studying. I think that because she was one of only three kids getting an "A" on the class, she thought that she could coast. She's not getting an "A" any more.

I want to kill her, but all I can legally do is take away her flat iron.

Well, you see, she got a Delightful grade in Science last week. The teacher told me that it was the highest grade in the class and that she has one of the highest grades in the class, so I shouldn't worry. Still, Delightful is Delightful.

She's been waiting all weekend to watch the new Harry Potter DVD and I think that I won't let her watch it.

Yesterday, after school, I took her out shopping for shoes for Mock Trial, because I didn't want to do it on the weekend. It took two hours, maybe I should have waited so she had more time to study.

Seems unreasonable that a "A" student would suddenly flunk a quiz because there was an hour she didn't spend studying for it. Something else is going on.

If it makes you feel better (well, no it won't because you don't like the show, but maybe it will distract you) there was a 5th grade math question on last night's AYSTA5G that asked "What is the product of 1.1 and 1.1?" While the rocket scientist figured it out, all five of the class got the wrong answer. I think they got blindsided by this question; while they have started 5th grade (or maybe this episode was taped in the summer, before classes had even begun), I don't think any of them had reached the lesson on multiplication of decimal numbers yet.

So what I'm saying is--umm--maybe your daughter got blindsided.

I don't want to sound alarmist here, but one of the things I took away from my (uncompleted) studies towards a master's in education was this:

If a kid has a sudden drop in grades, it's not caused by the material on tests.

I think that she is distracted by the holidays and social interactions and isn't prioritizing school. There's a guy she likes and she worries about how she looks to impress him. She is thinking about her role as attorney for Mock Trial and thinking about qualifying for Nationals at Quiz Bowl. I am really glad right now that she wasn't cast in the play. (Although she was named Drama Student of the Month.)

Her math teacher just wrote to me and said that there were 3 F's, but most of the class got A's and B's. She has a test on the subject next week, so she will be studying a lot this weekend.

Why do you say that you can not bar her from doing any of these things?

Do you think that it would have an impact if she knew that she was hurting people other than herself when she does not pay attention to her schoolwork.

I think that I relayed previously the story of the starting goalie for my select team. Her mom called to let me know that her daughter would not be at the next game, as she had failed a test at school. She thought that I would disagree with her. I told her that I would not have played her anyway, once I learned of the grade, but I thought that she should have to sit on the bench and watch the game, as we had to play a not-very-good backup goalie in her place.

That sounds like fun. Is it just sports-themed, or is it called "sportz" to compare it with athletics?

If she doesn't show up to Mock Trial or Comedy Sportz, she will lose participation points in her Academic Competition and Drama Grades. She doesn't need that right now.

Quiz Bowl is a different matter, but she doesn't have practice next week, so she should go today.

I am sure she is mortified. I am sure if it happens again, nitrah is right. If this is just a fluke, it was something that won't happen again.

I failed a test on purpose once, to fit in with a boy.

I still didn't.

I wonder if the Suchards live in the Bizarro tribe world? My daugther pulled this off in October - she has worked back to an A - and gets to straighten her hair a little less often.

Trust me, it doesn't help.

However, I must say I was pleasantly surprised that the Graffitti Kid had a Beautious Coveted plus Covered plus Coveted plus Capable Capable Report card yesterday.

I shudder to think what he would have received if he had handed a few more assignments in LOL

Really? You had a hair related Fantastic Fabulous grade too? I am so glad that I am not the only parent who had to deal with this type of thing. It just seems so odd.

She is a high school freshman - good student, good kid. I've been saying for 3 or 4 years that I wish she had a passion to be special at something (other than video games). She hasn't been all that involved in school activities in the past. She is enjoying Swim team now, but I tease her that when I suggested she develop a passion for something I wasn't thinking of ceramically straightened hair!

Send it to me! Mine started smoking and smelling really fried this morning. Unfortunately I wasn't finished using it yet, so my hair at the holiday party is going to be interesting.

I was thinking about this problem.

I can tell you what was a lifetime godsend for me.

Mandatory studyhall from 7:00 to 9:00 while I was a Freshman in high school. Granted, Maddie is living at home and not a boarding school, but I believe that there still may be benefit for her in instilling this concept of structured study time (or better time management).

It especially made the transition to college a breeze, allowing me to juggle a heavy course load, athletics, journalism, theatre, fraternity obligations, other organizational duties, and work.
