Lyrically Speaking 12-14-07 Scoring & Such

#1 Post by traininvain » Fri Dec 14, 2007 8:05 am

As I worked on a game from the 90’s last night, I thought to myself “Hey it’s Friday, why depress everyone”, so let’s go back to the year of my birth, the year of 61 home runs, the year of Camelot, it’s 1961.

LS #10…………………………..1961

1. I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello"

2. Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

3. Once I had a pretty girl
Her name it doesnt matter
She went away with another guy
Now he wont even look at her

4. Come on (come on)
(Let me show you where it's at)
Come on (come on)
(Let me show you where it's at)

5. So many days you passed me by
See the tears standin' in my eyes
You didn't stop to make me feel better
By leavin' me a card or a letter

6. Here's the moral and the story from the guy who knows
I fell in love and my love still grows
Ask any fool that she ever knew, they'll say

7. Jumped out of bed
Turned on the light
I pulled down the shade
Went to the kitchen for a bite

8. I've a pretty Seniorita waiting for me
Down in old Mexico
If you're ever in Alaska stop and see
My cute little Eskimo

9. It may sound funny
But I don't think she's comin home

10. My tears are fallin' 'cause you've taken her away
And though it really hurts me so
There's something that I've gotta say

Geez, if we had partial credit for just knowing the titles of the songs, I'd have actually kicked a little butt (by my standards) on this one....

Runaround Sue, not sure if it was Gary U.S. Bonds

No, but fairly generic lyrics...

10. My tears are fallin' 'cause you've taken her away
And though it really hurts me so

Familiar, but nope...
Better than the 90's, but still too vague! I demand partial credit for either title or singer! (Okay--actually, I don't care about points as long as I get more than beast ...... :P :P :P :P :P )

If I sniff enough Fabuloso and think long enough, that may eventually make some sense to me.... :P

I want to know what kind of machines only take a quarter to operate nowadays, though....

Go to Nevada City in Montana, and there is a museum of old nickelodeons and calliopes and other machines. Some still work and they are a hoot! One plays a violin that is in desperate need of a tuning, and one is called the Famous Obnoxious Horn Machine, that was the bane of bartenders everywhere until it was relegated to the museum. I dropped a fortune in coins in that place--it was a blast!

At least you're getting your money's worth.... :P

During a rare non-baseball trip 10 years ago, I was down in Osage Beach with my family, and we found a place that had all the classic arcade games I loved in the 80's... and for still just a quarter. I was in heaven....

And I could still play a pretty mean "Out Run"....

Never heard of that one, but my video game knowledge was pretty much limited to whatever our local bowling alley had.

The best value for your quarter, if you were good at it, was the original Super Mario Bros. It took an hour or so to beat the game, and the experienced player could easily do it with just one quarter....

Then there were the pinball games! My favorite was a baseball themed game that actually awarded baseball cards. For 2 bucks, you could play the whole 9 innings....

It's a good thing they don't make kids get a job. I'd have played myself into right into bankruptcy....

1 - Crying - Roy Orbison

2 - Cant Help Falling In Love - Elvis

LS #10…………………………..1961

I missed 1957 the other day. :( Oh well.

1. I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello"

Crying, Roy Orbison

2. Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be

I can't help falling in love with you, Elvis Presley

3. Once I had a pretty girl
Her name it doesnt matter

Now he wont even look at her

Hats off to Larry, Gene Pitney

4. Come on (come on)

Come on (come on)
(Let me show you where it's at)

Oh, crud, I'm sure I know the name, but the artist ... oh well.

I like it like that! Dave Clark Five

5. So many days you passed me by
See the tears standin' in my eyes
You didn't stop to make me feel better
By leavin' me a card or a letter

Please Mr. Postman, The Marvelettes.

6. Here's the moral and the story from the guy who knows
I fell in love and my love still grows
Ask any fool that she ever knew, they'll say

Runaround Sue, Dion and the Belmonts

7. Jumped out of bed
Turned on the light
I pulled down the shade
Went to the kitchen for a bite

Tossin and Turnin. . . Bobby Darin.

8. I've a pretty Seniorita waiting for me
Down in old Mexico
If you're ever in Alaska stop and see
My cute little Eskimo

Travelin Man.... Can't be Dion and the Belmonts or I'm wrong about six. Oh, the heck with it. Marty Robbins.

10. My tears are fallin' 'cause you've taken her away
And though it really hurts me so
There's something that I've gotta say

Take good care of my baby, Bobby Vee. Now I gotta go change my artist on 8.

LS #10…………………………..1961

1. I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say "Hello"
#2 Cryin’ – Roy Orbison

Don Mclean did a version of this in the early 80’s, right around the time that I had broken up with a girlfriend, hearing his version on the radio made me constantly depress for about a month. For that reason I prefer Orbison’s version better, I also like his rendition with kd lang.

2. Like a river flows surely to the sea
Darling, so it goes
Some things are meant to be
#2 Can’t Help Falling in Love – Elvis Presley

Elvis could sing the phonebook and make it sound good. I like how everybody just answered Elvis.

3. Once I had a pretty girl
Her name it doesn’t matter
She went away with another guy
Now he won’t even look at her
#5 Hat’s Off to Larry – Del Shannon

This is always a good ‘I told you so’ type of song, or ‘That’s what you get for breaking up with me’ song. What me, bitter, why no.

4. Come on (come on)
(Let me show you where it's at)
Come on (come on)
(Let me show you where it's at)
#2 I Like it Like That- Chris Kenner

This was a tough one, most people seem to remember the Dave Clark Five version from a few years latter. Good party song.

5. So many days you passed me by
See the tears standin' in my eyes
You didn't stop to make me feel better
By leavin' me a card or a letter
#1 Please Mr. Postman – The Marvelettes

Marvelettes, Martha & The Vandellas, it’s one of those ‘M’ groups from Motown
I remember posting a ‘parity’ of this on The Bored while waiting for a Sad PC.

6. Here's the moral and the story from the guy who knows
I fell in love and my love still grows
Ask any fool that she ever knew, they'll say
#1 Runaround Sue – Dion

One of the all-time greatest sing-a-long songs for the bar, along with his The Wanderer, which by the way were Dion solo hits, I didn’t penalize anyone who also included The Belmonts. I was lucky enough to see Dion almost 20 years ago when he was making a comeback with his Yo Frankie album.

7. Jumped out of bed
Turned on the light
I pulled down the shade
Went to the kitchen for a bite
#1 Tossin’ and Turnin’ – Bobby Lewis

I had been doing much of this the around the time that I was writing this LS.

8. I've a pretty Seniorita waiting for me
Down in old Mexico
If you're ever in Alaska stop and see
My cute little Eskimo
#1 Travelin’ Man - Rick Nelson

I always thought that Rick(y) Nelson didn’t get enough credit for his music, he recorded really nice stuff and had great musicians backing him on his records, one of which was the great James Burton. He also was well ahead of his time with the ‘Country/Rock’ sound that he had in the late 60’s and early 70’s.

9. It may sound funny
But I don't think she's comin’ home
#7 Ya-Ya – Lee Dorsey

There’s a great scene in the movie The Wanderers with this song.

10. My tears are fallin' 'cause you've taken her away
And though it really hurts me so
There's something that I've gotta say
#1 Take Good Care of My Baby – Bobby Vee

The poor-man’s Buddy Holly is probably a little cruel, but he was similar to Holly but just without the edge. He and his band filled in for The Crickets after the plane crash that killed Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper.
