Grumble®

(Sorry Marley, I'm borrowing your Grumble®, since you're already in the PPP.)

Not sure what to make of this one:

Q4) Put the following songs in chronological order by when the debuted in the Billboard Top 40, starting with the earliest:

1. Monday, Monday
2. Louie, Louie
3. Cherry, Cherry
4. Bye Bye Bye
And now, the rest of the story....
I punched in 2-1-3-4 and got Sad Fred.

According to what I've been able to find:

Louie, Louie is definitely the oldest song. It was originally released in 1955, but it was the version by the Kingsmen that first charted in 1963.
Monday, Monday was released and first charted around May of 1966.
Cherry, Cherry was released in 1966 and peaked at #6 in October 1966. (Not 100% sure when it debuted.)
Bye Bye Bye is easily the newest song, first released in 2000.

Without even getting into the fact that two of those songs appear to be WAY too close together, the order that I punched in appears, at first glance, to have been correct.

Not sure if I got Jipted, if I fat fingered, or if I'm just plain wrong about something here.

Four nights down, six to go. :x

I agree. If the question writers are younger they might not realize the version of the song they listen too is a re-make not the original.

I had a lot of younger people in my grad classes who were always astonished when an older student knew something they didn't.

Spoiler
If we are talking actual chart performance, it is indeed 2-1-3-4. My Billboard Book shows "Monday Monday" debuted on the Hot 100 in April '66, and "CHerry Cherry" in August '66. So that is in line with your dates above. "Cherry Cherry" charted again in the 70's as a live track, but that would STILL make it 2-1-3-4. So you either fat-fingered or you got hosed because someone in TPTB screwed up.

BD was amazed when I started singing "I'm A Believer" right along with Smashmouth. And was just as amazed when I told her how old the song really was.

Fred definitely said the words "debut" and "Billboard" so I'm sure it was the chart dates. Whether I fat-fingered or not, it's still a crappy question....two songs that originally charted at different times in the same year? WTF?

Absolutely a crappy question. 4 months' difference in debuts? Someone either didn't know their stuff or was being an asshole.

Your usage of the <grumble>® is entirely approved.

I knew I could have had any combinations of outcome from this Phone Game. It would take only one pop music question a day (even without a case like this, with two choices only months apart and with an apparent mistake in the answer key) to keep me talking to Sad Fred.

Awful luck getting that one, Dave. :(

Exactly why I don't bother playing TNPG. This is the question I would get and I would be doomed from the
beginning! I'm very sorry Dave. Keep trying!!!

I came to the same order and conclusion.

I could stretch and wonder if MushMouth was saying Bye Bye Love, a late 50s Everly Bros song, but that seems unlikely.

I'm thinking since the theme was songs with a repeat titles, and with the breakneck pace of Fred's mouth, maybe one of them was misheard. Perhaps Cherry Cherry was instead Chewy Chewy, which debuted in 1968? I can't believe they'd have 2 songs from 1966 in there.....

You'll get 'em tomorrow. We gotta get all the Seat Niners in the pool......
